Chapter One - THE REMARKABLE JEW

Comparatively few Christians realize how much they owe the Jew. It is my aim to set forth

in succeeding pages enough history of the Jews to cause the doubting, indifferent

Christians to realize that the followers of JESUS CHRIST are indebted to the Jewish race

    almost beyond belief.

I have preached scores of radio sermons during the past sixteen years in which I have pointed outthe importance of the Jew's contribution to our civilization and culture and his destination in thelight of Biblical prophecy. This treatise is largely a compilation of the highlights of several radiomessages.

I shall endeavor to make clear that, as a race, and as individuals, the Jew is most remarkable.

Also, that these industrious, clever people, scattered in every country known to man, are GOD'schosen people.

Furthermore, it shall be shown that all colossal efforts, both past and present, to destroy the Jeware doomed to failure.

Likewise, it will be made clear, I trust, that GOD's greatest sign is the Miracle of the Jews.

Then I shall deal with the subject of What is Happening to Israel and the Holy Land Today[1950].

In conclusion, I shall endeavor to tell the ultimate destination of the Jew, or What Will Happento Israel When CHRIST Returns. The sum total should make clear what the Christian owes the

    Jew.

A Jew is a person who believes in the religion called Judaism. Also, a person is a Jew who doesnot practice Judaism, if he is born of Jewish parents. Jews have many things in common besidesthe Jewish religion, one of which is their long history.

Abraham is known as the father of the Jewish people. Born in Mesopotamia about 2,000 B.C., heleft his homeland and traveled to Canaan, the country we now call Palestine. He was known as

Abraham the Hebrew and that is one reason why his descendants are sometimes referred to asHebrews instead of Jews. One of the first men to worship the One GOD was Abraham. Hisgrandson, Jacob, also was called Israel. The twelve tribes which later made up the Jewish peoplewere the descendants of Israel's twelve sons. Hence, the Jews are often referred to as theChildren of Israel, or Israelites.

For a long time the Jews were slaves of the Egyptians. Their great leader, Moses, led them out ofbondage about the year 1400 B.C. Jews to this day celebrate the festival of the Passover eachyear in memory of their being set free from slavery. For forty years the Jews wandered in thedesert between Egypt and Palestine. They fought many battles and endured cruel hardships.During that time they received, at the hands of Moses on Mount Sinai, the Ten Commandmentsfrom GOD.

Following the death of Moses, Joshua led them across the River Jordan into Canaan. Theyconquered that land, but it took them more than 200 years. During this time their leaders, calledjudges, were such men and women as Gideon, Deborah and Sampson. Later, the great prophetSamuel became the leader of his people. He and others who came after him tried to keep the

Jews loyal to the worship of the One GOD. There were many idol worshipers who tried to winthe Jews to their religion.

When the twelve tribes united to form a monarchy, Saul was chosen as the first king. Thenfollowed David, who led the Jewish armies against the Philistines, and who wrote many of thePsalms. His son, Solomon, built the first temple at Jerusalem for the worship of GOD. WhenSolomon died, political and economic differences split the kingdom. Ten tribes formed anindependent country in the northern part of Palestine called the kingdom of Israel. The two othertribes of Benjamin and Judah formed the kingdom of Judah in the south. These people wereknown as Judeans and the word Jew comes from this term.

Followed then the destruction of the northern kingdom by the Assyrians in 722 B.C. Thesouthern kingdom of Judah lasted only a short time longer. The Babylonian armies capturedJerusalem in 586 B.C. and burned down the Temple. Many Jews were left in Judea but somewere taken to Babylonia as captives. These Jews spent many years as captives or slaves inBabylon. Ezekiel the prophet encouraged them to look toward the day when they would return totheir homeland. In 538 B.C. the Persian emperor, Cyrus, allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalemand rebuild the Temple. Ezra and Nehemiah were great leaders of the following period duringwhich they helped strengthen the Jewish religion and nation.

Under the Persian rule the Jews enjoyed great independence, and even after Alexander the Greatdefeated the Persians in 332 B.C., they continued to live in comparative freedom. After the death

of Alexander the Ptolemies of Egypt took over rulership of Palestine and they continued thepolicy of Alexander. The Jews lived in comfort and peace for the most part until 168 B.C., whenthe Syrian ruler, Antiochus Epiphanes, attempted to force them to cease worshiping the OneGOD. Refusing to bow down to idols, Jewish patriots under the leadership of Judah theMaccabee defeated the Syrian emperor's army. Once again the Jews set up a kingdom under theMaccabees and this lasted for about a hundred years.

Quarrels between rival parties weakened the Jews until they were forced to accept Roman rule in63 B.C. Roman puppet rulers governed Palestine in such cruel fashion that the Jews revolted in

    3/34

68 A.D. The revolution failed, however, for the Romans captured Jerusalem and destroyed theTemple in 70 A.D. This put an end to an independent Jewish state until modern times.

Even before the Romans had destroyed Jerusalem, Jews had left the land of Israel to settle inother countries. After the destruction of their native land they scattered to the four corners of the

earth, still loyal for the most part to their religion.

The history of the Jews in Europe during the Middle Ages is one of persecution and suffering.Religious bigotry and intolerance was rampant and the Jews were oppressed. Many innocentJews were massacred during the Crusades, sometimes under the name of religion. In manycountries laws were passed which kept Jews from owning land, in others they were forced to livein segregated sections of cities called ghettos.

After several hundred years of unhappiness in Europe the lot of the Jews started to approve. TheFrench and the American revolution spurred people to more interest in the rights of liberty whichbelong to every man. By the middle 1800's they were recognized as free and equal citizens overmuch of Western Europe. One of the outstanding Jewish leaders in the battle for freedom was

Moses Mendelossohn, the philosopher. Once the Jews were given the privilege of sharing fullyin the life of the countries where they resided, they began to make contributions to the scientificand literary progress of mankind. From those days until the sordid era of Adolf Hitler the Jewsplayed an important part in the development of European culture.

Jews have had an active part in the development of the United States ever since the discovery ofAmerica. Several sailed with Columbus on his first historic voyage, and according to accounts ofthat voyage, the man who acted as interpreter for Columbus, Luis de Torres, a Jew, was the firstmember of the expedition to set foot on American soil. Long years of suffering had given theseoppressed people a keen appreciation of freedom, so that when the Revolutionary War got underway they were eager to win American independence. Many fought with Washington and one of

the great patriots was Haym Salomon, who contributed his entire fortune to the cause of thecolonial army.

Although some discrimination against Jews still exists in the United States, yet the religiouspersecution of Europe has never been allowed to exist in this country.

Individually and as a people, the Jews have given much to our civilization and culture. Almostthe entire Bible was written by Jews and it was the Jewish prophets Isaiah and Hosea who, almost three thousand years ago, proclaimed the goal of universal peace and brotherhood.

JESUS was a Jew. Likewise, the apostles and most of the early Christians were Jews. Many

notable achievements have been made by Jews in all fields of human endeavor.

The Jew was miraculous in his origin. He was miraculous in his universal dispersal and he ismiraculous today in his greatness.

In World War I a Jew did perhaps as much to win that epic struggle as any other one person. Hisname is Dr. Chaim Weizmann. This great chemist and Zionist leader discovered syntheticacetone which was used in making ammunition. Some think he actually won the war for theallies. He was elected president of the world Zionist organization in 1920. In 1948 he became

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    4/34

provisional president of the new state of Israel in Palestine.

In World War II Lise Meitner, a Jewish woman scientist, is given credit for publishing the firstnotes on uranium splitting which made the atom bomb possible. She had fled from Hitler's Reichto Copenhagen. Otto Hahn, German chemist, had been repeating experiments performed by his

onetime colleague, Lise Meitner. He succeeded in identifying barium. When Meitner saw hisreport she guessed that the huge uranium atom had been broken in two nearly equal fragments. She passed this idea on to Denmark's great atomist, Niels Bohr, who was just about to leave forPrinceton. Bohr told United States experimenters about it and they rushed to their atom-smashing machines and quickly confirmed it. This was in 1939. Then it was that Meitner, theJewess, published her uranium-splitting report. She called it fission, a new term for physics, although it was commonly used in biology.

But it was Albert Einstein, recognized as the greatest living scientist, who wrote what is perhapsthe most important equation ever devised by man. Stripped of its scientific terms, it meanssimply that energy is equal to mass multiplied by the square of the velocity of light. Withouttrying to get too deep into scientific discussion, it can be said that Einstein's theory of relativity

and his momentous equation actually made possible the production of the atom bomb. Einstein isa Jew. So, a Jew and a Jewess made the greatest contributions to World War II, in the opinion ofmany scientists.

And it was only a few days before these lines were written [1950] that Einstein offered the worlda new theory seeking to unlock the mystery of the relationship between gravitation andelectromagnetism. The theory was disclosed at a meeting of the American Association for theAdvancement of Science in New York. The United Press dispatch which announced this, onDec. 27, 1949, stated: "It is a complex theory that Einstein says he has not used laboratoryexperiments yet to verify it. If it proves correct, it should enable scientists in time to solve manyriddles of nature." The dispatch goes on to say: "It was Einstein's first theory concerning

relationship between energy, mass and light, proclaimed back in 1905, that ultimately pointedthe way to atomic energy."

So, we see that the Jew in modern times is in the forefront of scientific, and culturalachievements. He also excels in the fields of literature, medicine, history, philosophy, astronomyand philanthropy.

Disraeli, England's master statesman, was a Jew, Sarah Bernhardt, foremost actress of her day,was a Jewess. Others are Bernard Baruch, American financier, philanthropist and friend ofpresidents; Dr. Simon Flexner, American pathologist and director of laboratories, RockefellerInstitute of medical research for thirty-two years; His brother, Dr. Abraham Flexner, educator

and author; Irving Berlin, American composer of popular songs; Walter Winchell, columnist andradio commentator; Jack Benny, comedian; Walter Lippman, leading newspaper columnist;August von Wassermann, German bacteriologist and discoverer of the "Wassermann Test." Thelist is almost endless. Henry Morgenthau, Sr., American diplomat, and his son HenryMorgenthau, Jr., who was secretary of the treasury under Franklin D. Roosevelt. We could go onand on naming outstanding Jews who have wielded great influence in modern times. The topmen in the entertainment world -- stage and motion pictures, particularly, are Jews, as well asmany of the biggest bankers of the world. We do not mean to imply that all those we havementioned, such as Winchell and Benny, are in the same category of greatness as Einstein,

Flexner and Baruch, but we are trying to show that they are, at least, leaders in their fields ofendeavor.

Chapter 2 - The Chosen People of GOD

The Scriptures teach conclusively that the Jews are GOD's chosen people. There could be nogreater honor to a people than that the only begotten SON of GOD should be born of one of itsmaidens -- Mary, a Jewess. Now, let us study some earthly things.

"If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, If I tell you ofheavenly things?" (John 3:12)

The Kingdom of GOD and the doctrine of the second birth do not seem, on the surface at least, like earthly things. Yet, since these are the things of which JESUS had been speaking toNicodemus, the Kingdom of GOD and the doctrine of the second birth must be classed amongthe earthly things. Our LORD's declaration that Nicodemus was a teacher, or master (John 3:10),makes it evident that the explanation and justification for so startling an appellation, are to befound in the very Scriptures which the learned rabbi professed to teach. An examination of theseScriptures will show that this is the truth.

One of the Scriptures which Nicodemus ought to have been exceedingly familiar was that of theprophet Ezekiel. Read carefully Ezekiel 37:21-28:

"And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israelfrom among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and

bring them into their own land: And I will make them one nation in the land upon the

mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two

nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: Neither shall they

defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any

of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they

have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. AndDavid my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall

also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them. And they shall dwell in

the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; andthey shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their childrens children for

ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever. Moreover I will make a covenant

of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them,

and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. My

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall

be in the midst of them for evermore" (Ezekiel 37:21-28).

If you have not already observed them, let me point out the promises of GOD which are made in

the passage of Scripture just quoted:

    1. The Children of Israel are to be brought back into their own land.

    2. The two kingdoms, Judah and Israel, are to be united in one indissoluble kingdom in the land.

    3. One KING is to reign over them all.

    4. This KING is "David my servant." "David" here speaks of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, Whowill be the one KING over all.

That CHRIST is to be KING on the throne of David is evident by the statement of the apostle

Peter on the Day of Pentecost, when, speaking of David in the Psalms, (Acts 2:30) he said:

"Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God hath sworn with an oath to him, that ofthe fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;"

    The prophet Isaiah foretold it:

"Unto us (That is, unto Israel) a child is born, unto us a son is given . . . And his name shallbe called, the Mighty GOD . . . Upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom."

When He was born He was called the KING of the Jews. When He rode into Jerusalem, He was

saluted as the King of Israel, the SON of David; above His Cross was written, "This is the Kingof the Jews."

GOD will be, in a special and covenant way, in the person of His SON, the GOD of thiskingdom. This is the Kingdom of GOD. It is a kingdom in Israel set up on earth. It is an "earthlything" not because it is of the earth, but because it is displayed in the sphere of the earth.

Note carefully what is said in Ezekiel 36:26-27:

"A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will takeaway the stony heart out of your flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you

to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them."

This is regeneration, pure and simple.

When this regeneration is to be accomplished is set forth in Ezekiel 36:24:

"For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and willbring you into your own land."

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    8/34

Evidently, the reference is to the setting up of the unfailing kingdom in Israel, and when the kingshall have come. That regeneration opens the door to literal earthly blessings, as may be seen byreading 28 to 30 and verse 33 to 38 of the same chapter, the 36th, in Ezekiel:

"And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and Iwill be your God. I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for thecorn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. And I will multiply the fruit of the

tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among

the heathen . . . Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from

all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.

And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed

by. And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and

the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. Then theheathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD build the ruined places,

and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. Thus saith the

Lord GOD; I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will

increase them with men like a flock. As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in hersolemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that

    I am the LORD."

Thus regeneration is one of the earthly things, not because it is of the earth, but because it is oneof the characteristics in the kingdom of GOD in Israel as seen in its display in the sphere ofearth.

In the fulfillment of covenant promise, the SON of GOD came as the beloved of the FATHER,as the KING over Israel. Nicodemus, one of the rulers in the Sanhedrin; one who ought to haveknown all about regeneration, seeks an interview. He never rises to the idea that this JESUS is

the Holy One of Israel, his KING. He sees Him only as a teacher sent from GOD. The LORDcomes down to his level. He takes the part of the teacher and says to him, "You come to learn thetruth; you want doctrine -- very well, I say to you that the fundamental thing to know isregeneration, for without a second birth no man can enter, no man can even see the comingkingdom in Israel." Nicodemus is all in darkness. Then JESUS seeks to remind him of theprophet Ezekiel. He says, "Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again." He tellshim that this new birth must be the spirit, and in saying so, quotes the very thought, and, almostthe very words of Ezekiel. But no ray of light flashes through the darkened mind of this teacherin Israel. His manifest ignorance here is the reason for our LORD's seemingly singular rebuke,"Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?"

He does not understand these "earthly things." How could be understand "heavenly things?" By"heavenly things" our LORD meant the Church. The Church is a body of persons called out ofall nations to a faith in a crucified and risen CHRIST, exalted to be the second Adam, and thenew head, in whom all things in Heaven and earth are to be united. Each one of this body is bornfrom above, receives new life from the risen Man, is linked up with Him in vital union forever, and forever is indwelt by His Spirit.

This body of persons is not called to dwell on earth, as Israel, but to walk through it as pilgrims

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    9/34

and strangers, testifying against it. In the new era which will dawn at the coming of CHRIST,they will dwell with Him in Heaven, and reign with Him in associated glory over the kingdom ofGOD in Israel, as the Bride, the Queen Consort of the KING; as it is written in Revelation 5:10and in Daniel 7:27:

"And hast made us unto our God kings and priests; and we shall reign on the earth."

"And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the wholeHeaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an

everlasting kingdom and all dominions shall serve and obey him."

These are the heavenly things, not because they are more divine or spiritual than the earthlythings, but because Heaven, and not earth, is the sphere in which the church is to be displayed tothe glory of GOD's grace.

This distinction between the heavenly and the earthly things is made constantly in the Scriptures-- in Ephesians 3:15, "Of whom the whole family in Heaven and earth is named." The apostle

speaks of the family in Heaven and the family on earth. That is to say, of the Church and Israel --the one above, the other below, in the final order of the kingdom.

Our LORD was absolutely precise in the use of His terms. He told the exact truth aboutNicodemus. If the latter did not comprehend the MASTER when He spoke of earthly things, howmuch less could he have understood Him if He had spoken of heavenly things?

This interview not only shows the wisdom of the LORD; it clearly manifests the inexcusableblindness of Israel, and justifies GOD in bringing in the new dispensation of the Church -- thishour of the heavenly calling and measureless grace, not to Jews only, but also to the Gentiles;while at the same time it teaches us the necessity of rightly dividing the Word and the times of

GOD, and seeing to it that we do not confound the earthly and the heavenly things.

Chapter 3 - CAN THE JEW BE DESTROYED?

It should be kept in mind by all who profess to follow the LORD that ALMIGHTY GOD hasmade promises to His people who dwell upon the earth. Some of these promises are calledcovenants. Let us look to GOD's covenant as found in Genesis 12:1-3:

"Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy fathers house, unto a land that I will show thee: And I will make of thee a

great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all

families of the earth be blessed" (Gen. 12:1-3).

After the Babe of Bethlehem had grown to manhood and had attracted much attention throughHis miracles and authoritative teachings. He offered Himself to Israel as their KING, but fewresponded affirmatively by crying out ". . . Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he thatcometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest" (Matt. 21:9). Many of the people,

however, particularly government officials, Jewish priests and members of the Sanhedrinanswered, "Away with him; let him be crucified."

Before this cruel shout arose, CHRIST had made some startling statements. Let us read whatJESUS said in Luke 21:20-24:

"And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolationthereof is nigh. Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them

which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter

thereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be

fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days!

for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fallby the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall

be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled."

Of course, we know that JESUS CHRIST was their long-looked-for MESSIAH. Their rejectionof Him was the culminating crime of the Jews.

Their leaders were so blinded that they did not recognize their MESSIAH. Let us see what is said

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    11/34

    in Luke 19:41-44, as follows:

"And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadstknown, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but nowthey are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall

cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, And shalllay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee

one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation."

Also, note what is said in Matthew 23:37-39, which reads:

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sentunto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth

her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you

desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he

that cometh in the name of the Lord."

They condemned their MESSIAH to death, and turned Him over to the cruel Romans to becrucified. For such a crime against GOD, nothing but judgment could fall upon them. Bruisedand battered, robbed and ravished and scattered, the Jews have been a byword and proverb eversince.

Their covenant land is desolate.Their light to the Gentiles is extinguished.Their political government has been in the hands of other nations.Their religious leadership is transferred to CHRIST's Church. They have no pillar of cloud by day nor Shekinah fire by night. They are without altars, sacrifices and priesthood of bygone years.

Perfunctorily, they keep the "Great Day of Atonement," but no clean blood is shed forreconciliation to GOD.They have no atonement for their sins.Their sacrifices and oblations have ceased. They are without kings, judges, patriarchs, prophets or inspired writers. The Urim and Thummin give no evidence of divine presence.

Indeed, they are a wandering people, buried in the graveyards of all nations.

The explanation to all this may be found in three verses of Scripture.

The first is Hosea 3:4, which reads:

"For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, andwithout a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim."

In Luke 21:24, we find the second:

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    12/34

"And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations:and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles befulfilled."

In Romans 9:25-26 is found the third passage:

"As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and herbeloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it wassaid unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living

    God."

The Jews have suffered as no other people in history. During the siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.,under the crushing power of the Roman army led by Titus, one million Jews were slain and tensof thousands were carried away into captivity. Sixty years later, when they made their firstattempt to return, half a million were killed. Fifteen hundred were slain in a single day underKing John of England. For four hundred years no Jew set foot upon English soil. The Koran ofMohammed stigmatized the Jews as wild dogs. In Spain they were slaughtered by the tens of

thousands and tortured in almost every conceivable manner. America has been the only countrywhich has never persecuted the Jew. It is next to impossible to describe adequately the ghastlypersecutions under Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany. However, the Jew is indestructible!

    THE JEW IS INDESTRUCTIBLE!

It is significant to note that every nation that has ever persecuted the Jew has gone down orsuffered severely. Every individual who has ever persecuted Jews has suffered. The Jew is stillhere, but where are his enemies? The Jew will remain here until all of GOD's purposes have beenfulfilled. GOD will keep that oathbound covenant He made with Abraham concerning the seedof Israel. The nations will never get rid of the Jew. He is scattered in the program of GOD until

He regathers them. Only Israel can fulfill the program GOD has allotted them.

GOD has promised, "This people shall not pass away until all is fulfilled."

Pharaohs army tried in vain to drown Israel, and in turn was itself drowned.

Amalek tried to annihilate Israel and was annihilated.

Sihon and Og tried to exterminate Israel, and were themselves exterminated.

Haman was hanged on the very gallows he had erected for the execution of Mordecai.

The Assyrian and Babylonian empires attempted to banish Israel, and were in turn vanquished, but Israel lives on.

Nebuchadnezzar threw three children of Israel into a fiery furnace, but they came out unharmedwith not a hair even singed, for one like the Son of Man was with them.

Darius hurled Daniel into a den of lions but the hungry beasts could not devour him because an

    angel gave them lockjaw.

The descendants of Esau tried to destroy Israel and were in turn destroyed.

The Roman Empire endeavored to abolish the Jew and the decline of the empire followed.

    The Jew lived on.

Spain, the worst of Israel's persecutors, tried to exterminate them, and Spain has had nothing butbloody revolutions ever since.

The Russian czars took similar steps against the Jews and Russia is held in the demon grasp ofcommunism.

Germany also tried the same tactics and history has recorded the disastrous results. The Germanshave seen their government crumbled under the might of Allied power, and the Jew lives on.Germany's Frederick the Great once truly said, "No nation ever persecuted the Jew and

    prospered!"

One would think the Jew-haters and persecutors might learn from history, if not from the Wordof GOD.

Let us see what we find in Jeremiah 30:10-11 and 16:

"Therefore, fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the Lord; neither be dismayed, OIsrael; for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and

Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid. For I

am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I

have scattered, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, andwill not leave thee altogether unpunished . . . Therefore all they that devour thee shall be

devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they

that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey."

A Jew once said to Isabella, queen of Spain, "When you would curse us you cannot, for there is ablessing upon us; and, when you would bless us you cannot, for there is a curse upon us."

On two different occasions the Jews saw proud Egyptians perish in the Red Sea. They witnessedthe crash of Babylonian power. They saw the ruins of Macedonia's conquests. They beheld thedestruction of the Medes and the Persians. They have outlived the Caesars, and survived the

Dark Ages. They have come through civilizations, revolutions and retributions; yet they havekept pace with progress, discovery and art. They remain today as distinct as the day their historybegan. They are without a king, but very soon their KING will come and reign.

Meditate carefully on what Paul says in Romans 11:1-2, 11-12, 15 and 25:

"I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of theseed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people which he

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    14/34

foreknew. Wot ye not what the Scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God

against Israel, . . . I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but

rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to

jealousy. Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them theriches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? . . . For if the casting away of them be

the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? . . .For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise

in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the

    Gentiles be come in."

Then what is the future for the Jews? After the Church has been caught up to be with the LORD,many of the Jews will have been restored to the Promised Land. They will return to the worshipof GOD as the seed of Abraham. "The olive branches will be grafted back in again." Thistakes place during the day of Jacob's trouble, when Israel will pass through the melting pot. Anation will look heavenward for its MESSIAH. When Antichrist has had his day, suddenlyCHRIST will return from Heaven with all the heavenly hosts. A nation will then be born in aday!

I call your attention to Hosea 3:4-5:

"For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, andwithout a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:

Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their

king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days."

The paramount part of this message is that you and I are living in the day when these things arecoming to pass. In the face of present day signs and fulfilled prophesies, it seems that every onewould accept the LORD JESUS CHRIST and confess Him before the world as their SAVIOUR.

To the Jews [that might be reading here], most kindly would I say: Your day of terrible trial andpersecution is just ahead. I would emphasize that the Church of JESUS CHRIST is in no wayresponsible for this persecution. A true Christian loves both Jew and Gentile, and will work forthe salvation of each.

    Read carefully Acts 3:19-21:

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,

    when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

and he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:Whom the Heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets

    since the world began."

To any of you who hate the Jew; let me offer this advice -- leave the Jew alone; leave him in thehands of GOD, Who will take care of him and his enemies as He did in ancient days.

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    15/34

To the Church I would say -- do everything in your power to convert every Jew possible. YourBible says, "to the Jew first." I am glad I can look any Hebrew in the face with the knowledgethere is love in my heart for him.

But most important of all -- I would urge you who are not saved to settle this matter without

delay! Let me talk for a few moments, heart to heart, to the sinner. A sinner can never doanything to show himself worthy of forgiveness. The ground on which GOD forgives the sinneris not man's worthiness, or anything any human being can do or be. It is done for CHRIST'ssake. You are forgiven because CHRIST paid the penalty for your sin and cancelled it.Ephesians 4:32 says:

". . . God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

Let us suppose a poor man is given a check by some kind person. He is told to present it forpayment at the First National Bank. As he trudges along in the direction of the bank, he begins tobe skeptical. He thinks, "Maybe the bank won't give me the money." He glances at his raggedclothing -- his poverty is so apparent; his name is unknown at the bank. Taking courage,

however, he walks slowly into the bank and hands the check to the teller. The bank employeethen looks at -- what? Does he look at the man's unkempt raiment? Not at all! He looks at thename on that check. It is the name of one of the bank's best customers. And because the tellerknows the name and signature so well, the money is handed over to the man without a word.

Unsaved man, when you come to GOD seeking salvation, do you think for a moment GOD takesinto account your worthiness to be saved?

Do you imagine He takes into account how many sins you have committed? No! "Though yoursins be as scarlet," He has said.

Well, what does He look at?

Listen to me -- ALMIGHTY GOD in Heaven looks upon a cruel Cross where His only begottenSON was crucified for you! He sees the sin of the world laid upon His SON. He sees your sins,my sins, all men's sins laid upon His SON. He sees the blood that was shed for you and me.GOD can do only one thing -- forgive you! John 3:17:

"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world throughhim might be saved."

"Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. And being not weak in faith, heconsidered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither

yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: He staggered not at the promise of GOD through

unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God."

And in Hebrews 11:11, we read:

"Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and delivered of a childwhen she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised."

Israel began as a miracle and has continued as such for 4,000 years.

Thus we see the Jew born into the personality of Abraham bearing distinctive physical marks. Hemarches through Egyptian bondage, Assyrian conquest, Babylonian captivity, European hate,Jewish sin -- absorbing all the punishment and wrath that man can administer. He steadily hasrefused to be absorbed by any race of people as he moves forward to his destiny.

No race has ever been able to absorb the Jew and no race of people so universally dispersed hasever survived the Jew. He often has been referred to as the miracle of history. When Frederickthe Great asked the Court preacher for unanswerable proof in one word for the inspiration of theBible, he replied, "Your majesty, the Jew."

What other people can boast of the miraculous as can the Jew? There are the plagues of Egyptwhich fell with increasing severity as sledge hammer blows upon the chains that bound her in thebondage to a powerful nation until liberty was granted. The Red Sea opened a path to them. Theswollen waters of the Jordan divided for them. They were guided on their journey by a cloud byday and a pillar of fire by night. For forty years they were miraculously fed and their clothing did

not wear out. The sun and the moon stood still for them until their enemies were conquered inbattle.

An angel of GOD, at a very critical time, came down and slew 185,000 Assyrians. The Jew hadleaders like Moses, kings like David, prophets like Isaiah. Then they were dispersed among theother nations and races and became subject to them, paid tribute to them, bought and sold withthem, mingled in their society, sent children to their schools and soldiers to their battle fields. The Jews have been doing that for 2,000 years.

The natural thing for Israel to do would be to lose her identify through corruption of blood byinter-marriage with the Gentiles, and through leaving off her peculiar manners, become absorbed

into the life of other races. However, although a small race and scattered like dust through allnations, the Jew has never been absorbed by them. His blood has kept pure. His customs havenot changed. His peculiarities have not been perverted. Is not this a miracle?

The Jew has remained separated from all other races. He can become a good American, a goodGerman, a good Frenchman, a good Italian, a good Russian, a good citizen of any country hemay claim as his home. He can keep their laws, follow their customs, engage in their pursuits, send soldiers to fight their battles, and can die just as patriotically for the land of his adoption as

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    18/34

any other citizen of that country.

The Jew can live in any climate, adapt himself to any condition, serve under any flag, readilylearn and speak any language and can make himself at home wherever he may be. He can be allthings to all men, get along with any kind of neighbour, and can get rich in the same community

    where his Gentile neighbour fails.

Let us center our thoughts on the persecution and suffering of the Jews. The Bible speaks of theJewish nation as being broken, scattered, peeled and ground to dust between the upper andnether millstones of Divine Judgment -- but destroyed never!

The Jewish nation is to be among the Gentile nations, but never of them. It mingles with thembut never combines with them.

Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia and Babylon rose and fell. They are covered with the dust ofcenturies. We dig up their ruins with an excavating spade -- but who digs up ruins of the Jewishnation? Other nations rose, had their day and passed out, but the Jewish nation lives forever.

In Spain, through the Iron Maiden, Jews were destroyed by the hundreds until in 1492 Ferdinandand Isabella issued an edict banishing all Jews from that country.

The worst persecutor of Jews is Russia. In July, 1923, Chief Rabbi Doctor Adler said:"Wholesale slaughter, burials alive, rape and torture of the Jews is the order of the day. In manyplaces and entire Jewish population was wiped out and thousands of dead were left to be eatenby eaten by dogs and pigs.

In a leading Jewish newspaper appears a sketch of a patriarchal Jew holding in his hands a globeand searching for a place where the Jew is wanted. As he looks over the replica of the earth he

says: "Russia -- I am not wanted there. Germany -- not wanted there. Romania -- not wantedthere. France, Canada, England, the United States -- not wanted there." Then he exclaims, "Thisis a large and beautiful world, but there is no place for me." This is but a small price he has paidfor uttering:

"His blood be on us, and on our children."

In his farewell address some 3,500 years before, Moses declared in Deuteronomy 28:63-67:

"And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and tomultiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to

nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. And theLORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the

other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have

known, even wood and stone. And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neithershall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart,

and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and

thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: In the morning

thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were

    19/34

morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine

    eyes which thou shalt see."

All this would happen if they disobeyed GOD!

Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, saw this suffering 2400 years ago when he said: "And I willdeliver them up to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their hurt, to be areproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all the places whither I shall drive them.

And I will send the sword; the famine, and the pestilence among them, till they be

consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers."

    Byron wrote:

"Tribes of the wandering foot and weary beast,How shall ye flee away, and be at rest!

The wild dove hath her nest, the fox his cave,

Mankind their country, Israel the grave."

Einstein, the great scientist and mathematician, may be able to calculate the dimensions of theuniverse, but he will never be able to compute the staggering loss that came to this world whenthe Jews refused to accept CHRIST as their MESSIAH.

The best authorities say there were between four and five million Jews in the first Christiancentury. For sixteen hundred years they decreased in number. From a human standpoint, itseemed they were doomed to become extinct. At the start of the seventeenth century they hadbeen reduced to about one million. When the Roman army besieged Jerusalem in A.D. 70, morethan one million Jews were killed and 97,000 were captured. Sixty-five years later, whenHadrian dispersed them, 587,000 were slain. In the year 1020 King Canute banished all Jewsfrom England. In 1096 an attempt was made to murder all European Jews who refused waterbaptism. Until 1272 the Jews were allowed to amass riches only in order that they might beplundered. In France and Germany in 1306, 100,000 Jews were stripped of their possessions andforced to leave those countries. In Strausburg 2,000 Jews were fastened to a scaffold and burnedto death!

For nineteen hundred years the Jews wandered, despised and homeless, over the face of theearth. But, at the beginning of the nineteenth century they began to increase in numbers rapidly, and soon totaled some five million. Fifty years later they numbered seven million, and today[1950] there are eighteen million. There are almost four times as many Jews today as at any

previous time in their long history. This great increase has come largely during the past 100years -- years of toleration for the Jews. This proves beyond doubt that GOD is getting ready todeal with Israel and fulfill the promise made to Abraham as to the number of his posterity.

Today, in the middle of the twentieth century, the Jew has come to the front. In the realm offinance he has no equal. Fifty banking houses in New York City are controlled by Jews. Fifty percent of the jewelry trades is in their hands. There are 700 clothing firms owned by Jews. Theycontrol the moving picture industry, and, of course, there are many millionaires among them.

The London Stock Exchange is sometimes called the High Temple of Judea, because there are somany Jews on the exchange. The Rothschilds long have been leading financiers of Europe. Inevery country where the Jew enjoys liberty, he soon becomes the leading financier of that land.

Isaiah prophesied this when he said, "The forces (wealth) of the Gentiles shall come unto

thee." And in Isaiah 60:11 and 61:6 we read:

"Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day or night; thatmen may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought . .

. Ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boost yourselves."

The great mathematician, Dr. James Joseph Sylvester, recognized by many as the greatestmathematician of his day, was a Jew. England's cleverest statesman, Disraeli, was a Jew.Schechter, the great archeologist, is a Jew. Among Christian Jewish scholars we have men likeDa Costa, Adolph Saphir, Edersheim, Frank, Neander and Baron. Only three per cent of thepopulation of Germany were Jews, yet they held 100 chairs in German universities. TheEuropean press is controlled almost entirely by Jewish brains. Some of America's greatest

newspapers are owned by Jews. Zephaniah said, "I will make them a praise in all the landwhere they have been put to shame."

The Bible gives the history of the Jews -- but does not record the history of any other race ofpeople. Eighty per cent of the Bible is about the Jews, embracing their past, present and future. When GOD had a message to deliver to the Gentiles He spoke through a Jew -- Joseph toPharaoh, king of Egypt, Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar, Jonah to Ninevah. The thirty-nine books ofthe Old Testament all were written by Jews. The twenty-seven books of the New Testament allwere written by Jews, with one exception. That exception was Luke. The Bible, onlycommentary we have on world conditions, speaks with assurance and authority.

    Palestine belongs to the Jews.

Palestine is known by several names. It is called Canaan, the Land of Israel, the Land of theHebrews, the Promised Land, the Land of Judah, the Land of JEHOVAH and Immanuels Land.

The boundaries of Palestine are given in Ezekiel 47:13-21 as follows:

"Thus saith the Lord GOD; This shall be the border, whereby ye shall inherit the landaccording to the twelve tribes of Israel: Joseph shall have two portions. And ye shall inherit

it, one as well as another: concerning the which I lifted up mine hand to give it unto your

fathers: and this land shall fall unto you for inheritance. And this shall be the border of the

land toward the north side, from the great sea, the way of Hethlon, as men go to Zedad;Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim, which is between the border of Damascus and the border of

Hamath; Hazarhatticon, which is by the coast of Hauran. And the border from the seashall be Hazarenan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of

Hamath. And this is the north side. And the east side ye shall measure from Hauran, and

from Damascus, and from Gilead, and from the land of Israel by Jordan, from the border

unto the east sea. And this is the east side. And the south side southward, from Tamar even

to the waters of strife in Kadesh, the river to the great sea. And this is the south side

Jerusalem has been destroyed fourteen times, but each time it has raised its head in triumph.GOD said Jerusalem would be restored to the Jews in 1917. It was restored in December of thatyear by the Allies at the Supreme Council of San Remo. The Turks were in possession ofJerusalem at that time. GOD used England for the restoration.

Listen to this prophecy in Isaiah 52:3, which reads:

"For thus saith the Lord, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemedwithout money."

The Jews never received any money -- not five cents -- for the land from which they were drivenout. But they got it back for nothing -- GOD redeemed it. Twenty-seven hundred years before,GOD tells us how He would do this. Isaiah 31:5 reads as follows:

"As the birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he willdeliver it; and passing over he will preserve it."

Let me cite two things to the reader. First, the Turks were in possession of Jerusalem at the timeof its deliverance. The Turk, often referred to as the "Bloody Turk," has always been taught fromearly childhood that the greatest honor which can befall him is to die on the battle field, to keepthat which is in his possession, and never to relinquish anything without bloodshed.

Second, for 400 years no Jew set foot on English soil. The English were among the mostpersistent persecutors of the Jew. Who then would have even dreamed that England wouldsuddenly become the friend of the Jew and be the nation GOD would chose to restore Palestineto the Jews? England became the friend of the Jew and all the civilized nations followed herlead.

But GOD foretold all this hundreds of years before it happened. We quoted Isaiah 31:5 a fewlines before. Read it again.

"As the birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he willdeliver it; and passing over he will preserve it."

Who told Isaiah 2700 years ago that men would fly like birds? How could GOD defend, deliverand preserve Jerusalem when the Turks, the most blood-thirsty race in the world, were inpossession of the Holy City? To defend, preserve and deliver -- the Turk must relinquish hisclaim on Jerusalem without the shedding of a single drop of blood and not the sound of a singlegun must be heard. Could GOD accomplish this? The prophet said He would. Let us see what

    happened at the time.

The English government sent General Edmund Allenby to take Jerusalem for the Jews. He foundthe Turks in possession. Allenby hesitated to fire upon the Holy City, lest the indignation of thecivilized world be aroused. The general cabled his government for instructions and he was toldto use his own judgment. He refused to do this and he cabled the king. The king sent back hisreply in a single word, "Pray." Then Allenby sent for the commander of his fleet of airplanes andcommanded them to fly over the city. "As the birds flying," they soared over Jerusalem and the

    23/34

Turks sent word that they would surrender. Not a gun was fired, and for the first time in history, the Turk gave up that which he possessed without bloodshed. The LORD preserved, defendedand delivered!

On Dec. 9, 1917, while Allenby, a Christian general, was at prayer with his officers in his tent

west of Jerusalem, the Turkish delegation came out and surrendered the city.

General Allenby's name had helped to arouse fear in the superstitious Arabs. "The Prophet ofGod (Allah Neby) is coming," they said. How could they fight against GOD? General Allenbyremoved his hat and marched victoriously through the Jaffa gate. A bloodless victory was won.GOD had spoken and His message was fulfilled!

Since then the Jews have won their own flag. It consists of a white field with two horizontal barsof blue, with the star of David also in blue, in the center. The star consists of two interlockingtriangles.

Here is how Britain was given the mandate over Palestine. A few months before the war Britain

was given the mandate over Palestine. A few months before the war Britain found herselfrunning short of minerals used in the manufacture of high explosives for torpedo boats. Lack ofthis explosive placed Great Britain in jeopardy -- defeat was looming large. Then, the RussianJew, Dr. Chaim Weismann, came forward with an encouraging proposition. Weismann had livedin England for twenty years and was acquiring quite a reputation as a chemist. He haddiscovered a substitute for the needed explosive material. He offered the discovery to Britain.

He was asked his price and his reply was that he wanted no money -- only a promise.

If Britain would use her power to free Palestine from her oppressor, the Turk, and secure itfor a national homeland for the Jews, Weismann said he would allow Britain to use his

discovery. Britain readily gave him the promise and became the trustee of Jewish interests inPalestine -- and also used Weismann's discovery to help win the war .

The most significant battle of World War I was when the Turk fled from Palestine without firinga shot. A New York newspaper, after the fall of Jerusalem, printed a cartoon of a small boysitting on his father's knee. Referring to the incident, the boy asked his father, "What will comenext daddy?" The father replied, "I will get the Bible and see!"

The Jews must return to Jerusalem before the KING comes back. The throne must be set upbefore the KING can occupy it. Therefore, GOD is moving the Jews back to Jerusalem. Whilethe Jews have in mind only national restoration, GOD has a plan for national conversion. In

Jerusalem, 200 aged Jews meet daily to pray for the coming of their MESSIAH.

Let me point out some other things going on in Palestine. They are developing the Dead Sea.This unique body of water lies 1300 feet below the level of the Mediterranean Sea. The DeadSea has no outlet -- the sun evaporates the water. For thousands of years the River Jordan hascarried large mineral deposits into the Dead Sea, and there they have remained. The oceancontains 4.6 per cent salt. The Dead Sea is 25 per cent salt. It contains enough potash to supplythe world for a thousand years.

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    24/34

There are 200 acres of shallow pans into which water is pumped. The sun does the rest. Thewater is evaporated and the minerals are left. Jewish farmers receive these valuable nitrates at nocost.

The wealth of the Dead Sea has been estimated at 1,190 billion dollars. An idea of how much

this is may be gained by comparing it to the wealth of the United States [1950], which is only420 billion. The wealth of the Dead Sea is more than the combined riches of the world! An Arabproverb says: "Not until the Nile flows into Palestine shall the prophet from the west drive theTurk from Palestine." That is exactly what happened. Allenby's army laid a huge pipeline tocarry water for his 96,000 soldiers. This water was carried from the Nile over 200 miles of desertto his army at Jerusalem.

Palestine is beginning to blossom like a rose. One company shipped 750,000 cases of oranges inone year recently. The entire crop in 1930 was three million cases. The orange-growing area ofPalestine is capable of producing 40 million cases annually. The United States is producing some35 million cases.

The Jordan River is being harnessed for hydro-electric power. And the nitrates found in the DeadSea are in great demand for the manufacture of explosives. The potential wealth and area ofPalestine is beyond the thinking of most people.

Truly, Israel is GOD's greatest sign!

Chapter Five - WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY?

When GOD made a covenant with Abram (Genesis 15:18) He meant what He said. It was madeto Abram and his seed forever. It was given unconditionally. Since it has never been fulfilled it iscertain to be fulfilled in the future. Let us read the passage just referred to.

"In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have Igiven this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river Euphrates."

GOD wanted to give this land to His people, Israel. It was postponed because of sin. But GODdid not tell Abraham when this promise would be fulfilled. However, He did make conditions bywhich Israel was to possess the land. The condition was that they were to obey GOD in allthings. But, if they failed to recognize their separateness from other nations, (That is, beingchosen to be a peculiar people for the LORD, Himself), then they would be scattered among thenations of the earth.

The result was obvious, for if they did not remain separate from the other nations in theirworship of the LORD, then they might as well be mixed up with the nations. If there were nomoral separation, then there could be no religious separation. It was only as the nation wasseparated unto GOD morally that made it possible for national separation.

JEHOVAH is the GOD of the Bible, Israelites are the people of the Bible. The Promised Land isthe land of the Bible. This trinity cannot be broken. Therefore, if the people of the Book ignoreand turn away from the GOD of the Book, the land of the Book would be taken away from them. That is exactly what Moses told them in Deuteronomy 11:13-17.

"And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I

command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heartand with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first

rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full. Take heed

to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, andworship them; And then the LORDS wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the

Heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish

quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you."

Also, let us see what Ezekiel 36:16-19 says:

"Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, when the house ofIsrael dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings: their

way was before me as the uncleanness of a removed woman. Wherefore I poured my furyupon them for the blood that they had shed upon the land, and for their idols wherewith

they had polluted it: And I scattered them among the heathen, and they were dispersed

through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged

    them."

The Word of GOD clearly records the history of Israel. The sorrows experienced were the resultof Israel's sin. The Jews failed to recognize their peculiar position as GOD's people, and theresponsibility attached thereto. They forsook the GOD of their fathers and fell from the pathmarked out for them. GOD then carried out His promise -- His punishment -- and scattered themamong the nations.

That was all GOD could do, for He had to keep His promise. GOD gave them their land but thatdid not mean they could sin. That chosen land was given to a separated people. So, when theyturned their backs upon GOD they lost their land. They had been warned of the possibility onmany occasions, but the warnings only hardened their hearts. This led to their crowning sin -- thecrucifixion of their SAVIOUR! Although they had looked for Him for centuries, when He camethey were so steeped in sin, so determined to have their own way, they nailed their ownMESSIAH to the Cross.

Let us see what happened as the result of this sin. Luke 21:24 says:

"And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations:

and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles befulfilled."

Now this all happened. They were dispersed among the nations. But GOD has not forgotten thecovenant made with Abraham. GOD's promises were not nullified because Israel failed. GODhas not forgotten His promises to Abraham.

What about their fulfillment? GOD could not possibly be a covenant-keeping GOD if He werenot true to His Word. Therefore, the Children of Israel must return to the land of their fathers. This is true for two reasons. First, the promise given to their fathers. Second, the prophesieswhich must be fulfilled.

The Bible teaches they were dispersed because of their sin. It also teaches that they will beregathered from all nations. In Isaiah 11:11-12 we read:

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the secondtime to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from

Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from

Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    27/34

shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the

    four corners of the earth."

Is this prophecy being fulfilled? One must be blind, indeed, not to see this regathering from allnations. GOD permitted the great World War I to take place, and through it He delivered the land

from the Turk. since that time, the number returning to Palestine has increased year by year. Thishas astonished the world. Some unconverted men say it is the most phenomenal movement incenturies. The Christian knows it is not a phenomena but a miracle -- not a mystifying act ofnature but a divine decree being carried out. GOD's clock had struck the hour. There was nothingfor the Jew to do but to return to his land.

There is another important thing we must understand. GOD promised to richly bless the landwhen they returned. No such blessing was in evidence when the former owners lived there.During the dispersion of the Jews the land was utterly desolate. With the rightful ownersreturning it is blossoming like a rose. And the glorious prophesies GOD made in regard to thisland are being fulfilled today. It has become the wonder land of the world and things are shapingup for the final return of all Israel.

Next, let us consider what the LORD said would happen when they regathered. Zechariah 14:4reads:

"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalemon the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and

toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall

remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south."

    In Zechariah 12:10 we read:

"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spiritof grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and

they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for

him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."

Still there is another most important point. Before the Jews have this great revelation of theirMESSIAH, the nations will gather in Jerusalem to wipe them out! Zechariah 14:1-3 says:

"Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. ForI will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the

houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and

the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle."

Here we see the Federation of the Nations for that day. Remember that this is just before theLORD comes, when all nations are against GOD under Antichrist.

We come now to a most important part of our study. What does this mean to the true Christian?(Remember we are seeing the things happen for the end of the time of Jacob's trouble). If these

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    28/34

things are happening that will lead up to that climax, then the return of CHRIST for His Churchis near at hand, is "at the doors." Let us read two Scriptures on this point -- Matthew 24:32-33and Luke 21:29-30:

"Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth

leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors . . . and he spake to them a parable; Behold the fig

tree, and all the trees; When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that

summer is now high at hand."

But in Luke 21:28, JESUS said:

"And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; foryour redemption draweth nigh."

It most certainly is not conjecture with me when I preach that the return of CHRIST is near, evenat the doors. This is the day of grace, and the LORD has tarried. He is not willing that any should

perish. However, the day of grace must end. Therefore, it is imperative that the lost should seekthe LORD while there is yet time.

I would warn anew that it is doubly dangerous to put off settling one's salvation a single moment.First, He may come at any moment. Secondly, only in this life can you serve Him. Therefore, myearnest plea is -- give CHRIST what is left of your life and become a Christian.

Chapter Six - "Israel When CHRIST Returns"

What will happen to Israel when CHRIST returns? Not only the Jews but Christians as wellshould be intensely interested in knowing the answer to this important query. In this chapter itshall be shown that Israel will be restored to her land, aided by the Gentiles, her people willinherit Jerusalem and Israel will be saved from sin. Her temple and worship will be restored,

Israel will be great among the nations and she will become a world-wide blessing.

GOD called Israel for a purpose. What was it? Jeremiah 13:11 says:

". . . for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would nothear."

Israel proved disobedient to her call. She departed from the LORD, was treacherous, as a womandealeth treacherously with her husband. It was for that reason that Israel was broken off. Thequestion arises, did GOD cast away His people. It is answered in Romans 11:2 as follows:

"God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew."

Because of her sins Israel was severely punished. She was scattered among the nations. Thishumbling of Israel, however, will not continue forever. In Romans 11:25-27 we read.

"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should bewise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of

the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come

out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my

covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins."

Israel is going to turn away from her unbelief and be nationally saved. Just as surely as GOD sitson His throne, as surely as His word cannot be broken, Israel will be unto GOD for a people, andfor a name, and for a praise and for a glory. The glory of Israel in her latter days will be greaterthan in former times. A greater than Solomon is coming to regather Israel.

    Ezekiel 28:25-26 tells us:

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    30/34

"Thus saith the Lord God; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the peopleamong whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. And they shall

dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with

confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about

them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God."

Again in Ezekiel 34:13, 26-27, we read:

"And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and willbring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers,

and in all the inhabited places of the country . . . And I will make with them a covenant of

peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in

the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. And I will cause the shower to come down in his

season; there shall be showers of blessing. And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit and

the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I

am the Lord, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the

hand of those that served themselves of them."

How wonderful it will be when Israel no longer must fear her enemies. Today she shrinks in fearand hides her face. Russia has slain thousands of Jews and persecuted them unmercifully.Germany was turned into a veritable made dog by Hitler and tried to exterminate the Jew.

Israel never has possessed all of her land. Most of her territory today is held by aliens. Israel, however, has a title deed given her by GOD Almighty. When GOD divided the nations and gavethem their inheritance, He set their boundaries in regard to Israel, His people. And just as Joshuadrove out the inhabitants of Canaan Land, so will GOD drive out present-day "squatters" whenCHRIST returns and restores Israel to her rightful place.

Hear what GOD said and wrote with His own finger, and sealed with an unchanging oath:

"I will bring them again into their land that I have given unto their fathers; out of all thecountries where I have driven them. And I will bring them again to their folds; and I will

raise unto David a righteous branch, and a king shall rise and prosper. In his day Judah

shall be saved, and all Israel shall dwell safely, and they shall dwell in their own lands."

All this will be done through the aid of the Gentiles! Isaiah 49:7 says:

"Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, and His Holy one, to him whom man

despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see andarise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful, and the Holy One of

Israel, and he shall choose thee."

Here is a picture of the nations that once despised Israel actually helping her.

Israel also will be saved from her sin. Read again Romans 11:26 and 27, quoted in the first partof this chapter. Paul writes that all Israel shall be saved. In this regard I quote Isaiah 59:20-21 as

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    31/34

    follows:

"And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression inJacob, saith the Lord. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spiritthat is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy

mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith theLord, form henceforth and for ever."

    Now, let Isaiah speak again:

"Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? Foras soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and

be glad for her. Behold I will extend peace to her like a river."

Jeremiah also tells of GOD's covenant with Judah in which He declares their sin will beremembered no more. Jeremiah 31:33-34 reads:

"But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will

be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more every man his

neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me,

from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord: for I will forgive their

iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."

Next, let us study some excerpts from the twelfth and thirteenth chapters of Zechariah:

"And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spiritof grace and of supplications; and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced and

they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness forhim, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there be a fountainopened to the house of David, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness

. . . And one shall say unto him, what are those wounds in thy hands? Then he shall answer,

Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends . . . They shall call upon my

name, and I will hear them; I will say, It is my people, and they shall say, The Lord is my

    God."

Yes, indeed, Israel shall be saved through repentance -- saved through the blood of the Cross.Israel will be saved as a nation -- a nation that will put its trust in the LORD, JESUS CHRIST.

When Israel is saved she will bring forth fruits worthy of repentance.

Her life will be clean. She became a shame, but she will become a glory. She who once caused the name of the LORD to be blasphemed will bring honor unto it. Ezekielsays:

"Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean. From all your filthiness,

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    32/34

and from all your idols will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and cause you to

walk in my statutes, and ye shall be my people and I will be your God."

Jerusalem will become a praise in the whole earth. Her name shall no more be called "forsaken,"but shall be called "Hephzibah," meaning "My delight is her -- her land shall be called Beulah

    (Married)."

Israel's Temple worship will be restored. Haggai 2:6-9 tells us:

"For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake theheavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the

desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of

hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. The glory of this

latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place

will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts."

The book of Daniel also sheds much light on the subject of the restored temple and worship.

Israel shall be great among the nations. That is something every Jew should be able to lookforward to with great thankfulness in his heart. Zephaniah 3:20 reads:

"At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make youa name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before

    your eyes, saith the Lord."

Now let us see what Isaiah 60:1-3 says:

"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee, For,

behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lordshall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to

thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising."

Continuing, let us study the message in Isaiah 62:1-4 and 8-12 as follows:

"For Zions sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalems sake I will not rest, until therighteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that

burneth. And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou

shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. Thou shalt also

be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termedDesolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD

delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married . . . The LORD hath sworn by his right

hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for

thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou

hast laboured: But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and theythat have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness. Go through, go

through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    33/34

out the stones; lift up a standard for the people. Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto

the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold,

his reward is with him, and his work before him. And they shall call them, The holy people,

The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken."

Israel has suffered for two thousand years and has been trodden down of the Gentiles forcenturies. She has been persecuted by every country except America. Indeed, the lot of the Jewhas been a sad one since Israel turned from GOD. She has been robbed, flayed, afflicted andscattered. But during the time of Jacob's trouble, GOD will hear her cry. He will restore Israel toher greatness. "All nations shall call thee blessed. All nations shall honor the one who isdespised."

But the time when she will be restored to her glory must be preceded by the time of Jacob'strouble. she must go through the refiner's fire. In Scripture, the time of Jacob's trouble is calledthe Tribulation, and the Great Tribulation. It is a period of seven years -- the seventieth week ofDaniel. It will begin when the Church is raptured -- caught up to be with the LORD. It will endwith the return of JESUS CHRIST to establish His Kingdom on earth, when He will occupy the

throne of David and reign from Jerusalem.

During the seven years of the Tribulation Period, Israel will be under Divine chastisement.Because of her great sin she will suffer in the refiner's fire, but she will come forth with all drossremoved. At the beginning of the Tribulation period, Antichrist will make his appearance on theworld scene and will form a league and an agreement with the Jews. Israel will rebuild herTemple in Jerusalem, and when it is completed and Israel has resumed her ancient rites andworship, Antichrist will suddenly appear in the Temple and declare that he is God and that allmen will worship him. The Jew will refuse to do this. Antichrist will issue an order toexterminate the Jews, but GOD will miraculously provide a place of safety for Israel and willfeed her as He did during her wilderness journeyings. The Jew, at last, will have the scales fall

from his eyes and will understand the Scriptures and will cry for her deliverer, MESSIAH, Whowill come to save her. A nation will be born in a day. Israel will call upon the LORD and He willanswer and come down to her. Israel then will become a world-wide blessing.

    Ezekiel 36:23 reads:

"And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye haveprofaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, saith the

Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes."

Yes, Israel will become a great blessing in the earth. The Church will be caught up and taken

out. Israel will be a light unto the nations.

All the prophecies of the time teach that Israel shall be saved as a nation and restored as a nation.Today, Jews think of a national homeland, but GOD thinks of a national salvation.

It seems to me that Christians today are failing to recognize the signs of the times, which mostcertainly point to the early return of JESUS. There have been enough miraculous happenings inthe past generation in Palestine to show indubitably that GOD's plan for Israel is taking shape

  • 8/7/2019 What the Christian Owes the Jew

    34/34

    according to prophecy.

In preceding pages I have tried to show the Christian how much he owes the Jew in the way ofculture and achievement and even salvation. It should also be understood by any earnest Jewwho will read this book that he, of all people, should be profoundly grateful to Almighty GOD

for the blessings of the past and for the glorious day Israel will enjoy in the days to come. TheJew should cast aside all previous doubtings and seek JEHOVAH's revelation in regard toJESUS CHRIST, the only begotten SON of GOD, the SAVIOUR of all mankind -- theMESSIAH.

The Jew is truly remarkable, his history reveals beyond doubt. He is the chosen of GOD and hecannot be destroyed. He is GOD's greatest sign to the Gentile and should be prayed for andworked with by all professing Christians. The most enthusiastic Christian workers I have everobserved were converted Jews. Since the Christian owes so much to GOD's chosen people, extraeffort should be exerted toward evangelizing the Jews.

I have long been a friend of the Jew and shall continue to work for his salvation. Through my

radio ministry thousands of dollars have been raised and sent to organizations whose business itis to evangelize the Jews. As these lines are being written I am preparing to visit Palestine whereI may obtain first hand knowledge of the marvelous things that are transpiring in Israel'shomeland.

In conclusion, I pray that every person who reads these chapters about the most remarkablepeople in the world, be he Jew or Gentile, will trust the most remarkable personality in the world-- the LORD, JESUS CHRIST, as his SAVIOUR, and serve Him faithfully until He comes again.
