• William James Pirie• From Edinburgh • Joined the army in on 30th April 1917 • 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders • Company Sergeant Major • Had a family • Was awarded two medals

A Little bit extra… • He died in battle on the 25th November 1917• William James Pirie is buried somewhere in Loos memorial

which is in France.• He actually fought in the Bore War but left the army after it

ended. He the rejoined the army in 1917 as a Company Sergeant Major.

• His son was also called William James Pirie.

Loos Memorial

Loos Memorial• The Loos Memorial commemorates 20,605 British officers and

men who were killed from 25th September 1915 to the end of the war in November 1918 in the battle sector between the river Lys in French Flanders and the village of Grenay, near Lens, in Artois.

• The thousands of names of the servicemen missing in action with no known grave are inscribed on 139 stone panels attached to these side and rear walls.

• The Name comes from the Battle of Loos which was fought in the fields beside the memorial.

Task Imagine you are now William Pirie. You are to write a short diary entry as William who is about to be deployed to France and leave his family in Edinburgh.

Things to include,• How he is feeling?• Where is he going? • Where is he now?• What is going to happen to his family?• What is he worried about?• Is he excited?

Learning Intention:• I can begin to imagine what it was like to be a soldier in WW1

from engaging with the artefacts. • I can write a Diary entry to explain how the soldier was

feeling at the time.Success Criteria:• Use correct diary entry format• Accurate punctuation and spelling• Include a good range of describing words and emotive

language• BE CREATIVE!!!!!!

For Wednesday

Talk to your Family and try to find out if you have any relatives who have fought in any wars whether it be WW1 or more recently in Afghanistan.

See if you could find any artefacts like the ones we explored today and bring them in to let everybody else see.
