Using data from Digimap in ArcGIS
Data in Digimap – what’s available?
MasterMap vector data, GML format
Administrative boundaries and postcode data
Range of OS map data:
•Backdrop maps
•Land & height data
•Vector data
•Place name and road name databases
Data in Digimap – 2 types
Data Download - raster data
Data Download – Land and height data
Data Download - Vector data
Data Download - Location data
MasterMap Download
• Most detailed mapping available of GB
• Scale 1:1250 to 1:10000
• Widely used by architects and planners
• NOTE: MasterMap Download provides vector format MasterMap. Raster format MasterMap is available in Data Download.
MasterMap Download
Ordnance Survey have 4 layers of MasterMap data (Topography, Imagery, ITN and Address Layer)•Digimap offers two of these layers:
• Topography layer• Integrated
Transport Network (ITN) layer
Boundary Download products
•Code-Point – postcode listings or postcode polygons
•Boundary lines – e.g. counties, unitary authorities, electoral areas
•National GB boundaries
Code-Point
• Code-point data, on 1:10000 Scale Raster background
Code-Point Polygons
• Code-Point data and Code-Point Polygons, on 1:10000 Scale Raster background
Boundary lines sample
•Raster map of Edinburgh
•Scotland constituency boundary lines overlaid

Using data from Digimap in ArcGIS
How do I use this data in ArcGIS?
1. Download data from Digimap (zip file)
2. Process the data
3. Import data to
ArcGIS
4. Analyse data / Create
map
a. Unzip data file
b. Convert the
data to a
format
compatible
with your
software - if
necessary
Unzipping standard Digimap zip files
Use the standard Windows unzip facility:
Unzip standard Digimap zip files
Unzip MasterMap zip files
• Data is delivered in GZip file - GML data within the Gzip
• Can extract the GML file from the Gzip file…not always necessary to do this
Data in Digimap - what formats?
GML
SHP, NTF, CSV,
MIF/MID
TIFF, SHP, NTF, GML, MIF/MID, DXF, CSV,
ASC
Data in Digimap – what formats?
• Some products are available in more than one format, e.g. Strategi is available in NTF, DXF, SHP and MID/MIF
What formats are compatible with ArcGIS?
• Raster data products are available in TIFF format• Compatible with ArcGIS
What formats are compatible with ArcGIS?
• TIFF World files - contain the location, scale, and rotation of a map that is stored as a TIFF image.
• Remember to keep the supplied TIFF files and the TFW files in the same folder! Otherwise your GIS software cannot locate the TIFF geographically.
What formats are compatible with ArcGIS?
• Shape files do not require any conversion prior to use in ArcGIS.
• Remember to keep all constituent parts together - SHP, DBF, SHX:
What formats are incompatible with ArcGIS?
– NTF: • OS Land-Form Profile – convert to ESRI Geodatabase• OS Land-Form Panorama – convert to ESRI Geodatabase
• OS Meridian 2 – SHP files available• OS Strategi – SHP files available
• OS Code-Point – CSV files available• OS Boundary Line – SHP files available
– GML: OS MasterMap, OS VectorMap Local
NTF data
• Convert to ESRI Personal Geodatabase format (.MDB suffix), using Productivity Suite or Map Manager (ESRI tools).
Original file from Digimap
Converted file for use in ArcGIS
Productivity Suite, NTF Convertor
• Available through Eduserv CHEST:– ESRI Productivity Suite (ArcGIS V9.2 or later) – Map Manager (ArcGIS V9.1 or earlier)
GML data
2 data products are in GML format:
1. OS MasterMap data
2. OS VectorMap Local data
It is possible to import GML/GZ files to ArcMap 10. However, in our experience it is trickier to isolate features, analyse the data, change the style when using this method. We recommend that you convert the data if possible.
OS MasterMap conversion
Possibilities:
1. Convert to ESRI Geodatabase format using Productivity Suite (ArcGIS V9.2 or later) or Map Manager (ArcGIS V9.1 or earlier)
2. Convert to Shapefile format using InterpOse
Productivity Suite, OS MasterMap Data Convertor
• Available through Eduserv CHEST:– ESRI Productivity Suite (ArcGIS V9.2 or later) – Map Manager (ArcGIS V9.1 or earlier)
OS MasterMap Convertor
•Converts OS MasterMap data to ESRI Personal Geodatabase format •Accepts GZip files for conversion
InterpOse Digimap edition
http://www.dottedeyes.co.uk/spatial_data_loading/interpose/digimap.php
• Free download, which converts MasterMap GML data to SHP file format (and various other formats)
• InterpOse accepts GZip files for conversion
OS VectorMap Local conversion
• Free download:
http://www.rolta-europe.com/osvector.html• Converts OS VectorMap Local to Shape file format• Accepts GZip files
Gazetteer data – available in Data Download
• Delivered in CSV file• Saved as DBF IV, using Excel 2003• N.B. DBF IV option not available in Office 2010 – try
Open Office spreadsheet

What is ArcGIS?
• Desktop Geographic Information System• 3 levels of license
• Applications within license:– ArcMap explore/analyse data and make maps. – ArcCatalog data management – ArcToolbox™ tools for data/spatial analysis
ArcMap
Map display panel
Table of contents – view data layers
Toolbar – open ArcCatalog and ArcToolbox here

Using data from Digimap in ArcGIS
Appearance of vector data
• Vector data (e.g. OS MasterMap, OS VectorMap Local) will not have the same appearance as it does in Digimap, when initially added to ArcMap
MasterMap data viewed in ArcMap
Appearance of vector data
•Possible to apply style (or symbology) files to the data, to replicate the Digimap style
Symbology, or style, files
• InterpOse – provide style files for use with ArcGIS and MapInfo, which can be installed to your computer on setup of InterpOse
• Rolta - provide style files with the installation• Productivity Suite, Map Manager – style files supplied
EDINA supply style files for several data products – find these in the Help pages.
EDINA Symbology, or style, files
• OS data:– MasterMap, Strategi, Land-form Panorama, Meridian,
Land-Line – in Help under Using data with ArcGIS 9.x
• Geology Digimap – bundled with data download file. 1 avl file for each Shape file.
• Marine Digimap – download Fonts files and Style file from Marine Digimap Help pages and copy into relevant folders in C:/Program Files.

Using data from Digimap in ArcGIS
Digimap OpenStream
Digimap OpenStream
• Free service to anyone with .ac.uk email address• Must register to use the service• Allows users to stream certain OS data sets directly to
their software without downloading and storing large quantities of data
• Digimap OpenStream provides access to the following OS OpenData products:– MiniScale® – 1:250,000 Scale Colour Raster– OS Vector Map™ District (Raster)– OS Street View®
• http://openstream.edina.ac.uk/terms
Digimap OpenStream
Digimap OpenStream API key
• Add my API key to the OpenStream URL:
http://openstream.edina.ac.uk/openstream/wms?token=[your_aipkey]
• Setup this URL in my GIS > allows me to stream OS data
