DEMOCRACY IN SPAIN
The first democratic system, since the Spanish
War was held on, was established the 15th
June 1977. One of the first jobs of the new
government was to write a new Spanish
constitution, which was agreed in 1978.
But before our nowadays Constitution from
1978, there were severals…..
Our Constitution says that:Spain is a democracy, based on
the rule of law.
The state must protect the human rights of all Spanish citizens.
Spain is one state, but that its regions have a right to autonomy.
In Spain, there is a general election every four years. There are also regular regional and local elections.
All adult citizens can vote in these elections.
Spain is a parlamentary monarchy. There is a monarch, who is the head of state. The monarch’s role is mainly ceremonial, but he also represents Spain internationally.
LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT IN SPAIN
Spain’s central government is based in the capital city, Madrid.
The territory of Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities (Ceuta and Melilla). Each community has its own regional government. The autonomous communities are divided into 50 provinces.
The 50 provinces are further divided into thousands of municipalities. Some municipalities are very big while others are tiny: over three million people live in Madrid, but very small municipalities have a population of less than one hundred people. Those large municipalities can be divided into districts.
The table shows the main institutions of each level of government in Spain:
