Institutions

I have researched many different media institutions to decide upon a suitable one which would distribute my

own music magazine.

Where to buy my magazine• As my magazine genre is alternative, I think the

magazine should be sold in shops which correspond to my target audience.

• This would mean that my magazine should be available for young people aged 16-25 in shops like Urban Outfitters and niche small shops which sell the likes of vinyls and tapes.

• I would also suggest that my magazine should be available online to order for subscription, or to just read it in general. I think that this would be beneficial as it will be made available to a much larger audience.

Large Institutions:

They tend to produce media that has a large audience and therefore will need to be distributed to a wide

variety of people

Bauer • Bauer are a large European based media company that manages a portfolio of magazines, digital products, radio and TV stations in local markets across the world.

• Bauer produce magazines such as Q and Kerrang, this makes them strong contenders for my own magazine because they are experienced with music magazine publishing.

Average success rate of 50,000 readers a year (2013)

Clash is a popular music and fashion magazine and website based in the United Kingdom.

The brand's content alternates between modern bands such as The Horrors, Florence & The Machine and Jamie xx as well as hip-hop artists like DJ Shadow, Kanye West and Beastie Boys, who have all had cover spots in recent issues.

It concentrates on music and fashion, and often their effect on surrounding culture, as well as film and technology.

My Decision…• Having looked at quite a few different media institutions, I

have decided the one that would suit my magazine the most would be ‘Republic of Music’

• I have chosen this institution over the others as this company is more independent than the rest, which matches the style of artists featured in my magazine.

• They also work closely with independent labels to sell, market and distribute their releases to help maximise their sales potential in the UK.

• I think this would benefit my own magazine as they are experienced and successful, whilst also being considerate of the music – choosing artists with talent over money.
