What is the difference between Ethanol & ethanoic acid

Some IUPAC DETAILS ABOUT ETHANOL• Its IUPAC name is Ethanol or

commonly known as Ethyl Alcohol.• It has functional group -OH, known

as Hydroxyl Group.• Hydroxyl Group mainly represents

the Alcohol group. • Note : Functional group is the group

of atom which largely determines its chemical property.

SOME IUPAC DETAILS ABOUT ETHANOIC ACID• Its IUPAC name is Formic Acid (OR

Acetic Acid)• It has fuctional group -COOH,

known as Carboxyl group.• Carboxyl group mainly represents

Carboxylic Acids.• Note : 5-8 % of acetic acid known as

Vinegar which is widely used as preservatives in food.

On the Basis of physical properties• ETHANOL• It is a pleasant

smelling compound.

• Its boiling point is much lower. (nearly 351 K)

• It is the only hydrocarbon which is soluble in water in all proportions.

• ETHANOIC ACID• It is a pungent

smelling compound.

• Its boiling point is much higher. (nearly 391 K)

• It is miscible with water in all proportions.

On the basis of chemical properties

• ETHANOL• It does not

produces brisk effervescence when reacts with Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3)

• ETHANOIC ACID• It produces brisk

effervescence when reacts with Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate (NaHCO3) due to evolution of CO2 gas.

• CH3COOH + NaHCO3 CH3COONA + H20 + CO2)

REACTION BETWEEN ETHANOL & ETHANOIC ACID• When ethanol reacts with

ethanoic acid then the sweet smelling compound (Ester) is formed.

• CH3COOH + C2H5OH CH3COOC2H5 + H20

• Here CH3COOC2H5 is known as ester or Ethyl ethanoate.
