The Safer Sleep Guide*

Please share or post this guide so that everyone knows how to keep your baby safer during sleep time.

wants to sleep in a safe space.

You can download another copy from www.lovetodream.com or www.firstcandle.org to give to all other caregivers, day care center staff or relatives, so that they know how you want to keep your baby safe.

Have baby sleep in parent’s bedroom for the first 6-12 months, but always separate from parents on a surface designed for infants, like a crib, bassinet, portable crib

or play yard. Bed sharing should be avoided and is not recommended.

Always place baby on their back for every sleep for the first year.

Side and tummy positions are not safe. The back sleep position does not increase the risk of choking or

aspiration in infants, even for those with gastro reflux.

Use a crib and mattress that meets the current safety standards. The mattress should be firm, flat and fit snuggly in the crib, and covered

by a tight fitting crib sheet.

Do not use blankets for sleep time. Starting from birth, use the

Love To Dream SWADDLE UP™ for sleeping – even for naps. Choose

size according to baby’s weight and make sure it fits snuggly around the neck without being too tight. Never put blankets, pillows, bumper pads, stuffed animals, etc. in the infant’s

sleep space.

To help prevent your baby from overheating, monitor the room

temperature to ensure it is comfortable and well ventilated.

Do not overdress your baby or add blankets. Consult our clothing guide

to prevent overheating.

Couches and armchairs are extremely dangerous sleeping

environments for infants and not recommended. This also includes

sleeping on the parent’s chest.

Offer your baby a pacifier if they haven’t found their hands to soothe themselves.** Once baby is done

feeding, always move them back to their own safer sleep environment.

Do not expose your baby to cigarette smoke and avoid the use of alcohol or illicit drugs.

When baby starts showing signs of trying to roll over, it is time to transition to ‘arms-free’ sleep by using either a SWADDLE UP™

Transition Bag or Transition Suit, with removable arms or wings

for an easy transition.

Make sure there aren’t any cords from monitors, window

coverings, etc. within three feet of the baby’s crib.

Working together to raise awareness

*Based on guidelines from American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and First Candle. **Use of pacifier is recommended by the AAP, while the World Health Organization does not recommend its use within the first month of the child’s life or after 1 year of age.
