What is Research?

Basic research is like shooting an arrow into the air and, where it lands,
Painting a target. – Homer Burton Adkins (1892‐1949, Organic chemist US)

Structured enquiry that utilizes acceptable scientific methodology to solve problems and create new knowledge that is
generally applicable.

What is Research?
Why Research?Solve a problem, answer a question or Publish
Dissecting the Dimensions of Research: topic, novelty, technology, scope, mode, methods, ideology, politics, utility
Reassembling the Dimensions: Quantitative vs Qualitative research

Also called "Empirical Research," refers to any research based on something that can be
accurately and precisely measured.
e.g. It is possible to discover exactly how many times per second a hummingbird's wings beat and measure the corresponding effects on its physiology (heart rate, temperature, etc.).
Quantitative Research
Farrukh Malik (M Pharm, MPH, PhD ©)
Research based on something that is impossible to accurately and precisely
measure.
e.g. Although one certainly can conduct a survey on job satisfaction & conclude that such‐and‐such percent of the respondents were very satisfied with their jobs yet it is not possible to come up with an accurate, standard numerical scale to measure the level of job satisfaction precisely.
Qualitative Research

Medical / Public Health Research
Medical / Public Health Research attempts to produce new knowledge about the wider health community.
Results or theories should apply beyond the sample of the population.

How to do Research
Research is all about
Addressing an issue or
Asking and answering a question or
Solving a problem, so ……..
Farrukh Malik (M Pharm, MPH)
10
Identify an issue, question, or problem.
Talk with people who want or need your study.
Find out what's already known about it.Talk with experts and/or read their reviews and the original research on the topic.
Plan, cost, and do your study accordingly.
Write it up and submit it for assessment.
. . . to do Research
Farrukh Malik (M Pharm, MPH, PhD ©)
Always try and do a good job on it and
“Submit it for Publication”
WHY ???
The work will Benefit More People if published.
Rule No. 1 in academia is
“Publish or Perish”.

Dissecting the Dimensions of Research• Various kinds of research advances when various dimensions (components) of
research are identified.
– Consider these 10 dimensions:
• Topics: physical–biological–psychological–sociological
• Novelty: create new vs review published data or info
• Technology: develop new vs use existing methods
• Scope: study a single case vs a sample
• Mode: observe vs intervene
• Methodology: qualitative vs quantitative (info vs numbers)
• Ideology: objective vs subjective (positivist vs interpretivist)
• Politics: neutral vs partisan
• Utility: pure vs applied
• Reassembling the dimensionsFarrukh Malik (M Pharm, MPH, PhD ©)
Reassembling the Dimensions• A given research project is a point in multidimensional space.
• Some regions of this space are popular:
These often go together as quantitative research.
These often go together as qualitative research.
interventionist observational
biophysical psychosocial
sample case
quantitative qualitative
objective subjective
neutral partisan

ideologypolitics
This pigeonholing doesn’t apply to the novelty, technology and utility dimensions.

Characteristics of Quantitative & Qualitative Research
1. Formulating the Research Problem
2. Developing the Objectives
3. Preparing the Research Design including Sample Design
4. Collecting the Data
5. Analysis of Data
6. Generalisation and Interpretation
7. Preparation of the Report or Presentation of Results‐Formal write ups of conclusions reached.

Extensive Literature Review
Farrukh Malik (M Pharm, MPH, PhD ©)
Every honest researcher I know admits he's just a professional amateur. He's doing whatever he's doing for the first time. That makes him an amateur. He has sense enough to know that he's going to have a lot of trouble, so that makes him a
professional.
‐‐ Charles Franklin Kettering (1876 – 1958) American inventor, engineer, businessman, and the holder of 186 patents
