    What is Dunjia?

    Qi Men Dun Jia (or Qimendunjia) is one of the three most powerful oracles--Tai Yee, Liu Renand Qi Men---to know both good luck and bad luck in aspects of time and space(direction). TaiYee is used to divine the big events that happen with contries, such as earthquake, big

    hurricanes, massacre, natural disasters, etc. Qi Men is generally used for military action andtake what strategic methods in ever-changing battle field. Liu Ren is mostly used for divining thegeneral daily events which means it is close to our daily life.

    Qi means mysterious or strange in usual, but here, it means valuable or holy. Men means agate, and Dun means hidden or escaped (to make hidden), and Jia is the first one of ten stems,which is considered as the most sacred in this method.

    All the three oracles use very special chart to divine and give conclusion. Yes, all of them cannotdo without Heavenly stems, earthly branches, Ho drawing, Luo Drawing, Eight Trigrams,Emblematic elements and divine number, etc.

    Dunjia can be divided into Year School Dunjia, Month School Dunjia, Day School Dunjia andTime School Dunjia in terms of the time. In terms of reasoning methods it should be divided intoLine-Up Palace Dunjia and Jump-in-Palace Dunjia.

    Here we introduce Time School Dunjia, Line-Up Palace Dunjia.

    People may ask when the Dunjia came into presence and why it existed. Nowadays manypeople believe Dunjia originated from milatary force arrangements in the battle field and suchstatements gained wide approval in the scholar circle.

    In the very old book The Song from Old Fishing Man carried the following story:

    XuanYuan Emperor fought a fierce battle with Shi You without results for many years. In adream he dreamed Heaven gave him an oracle and XuanYuan paid respect in a sacrificeplatform and practiced such arts latter and got a final success soon after. He ordered maliataryman Feng Hou to write down the arts in words and that was the beginning of Dunjia.

    Also, it was Spring and Warring Times when the so many states fought endless battles tooccupy territory and there was enough demand for application of such arts.

    Also the book Arts of War carried similar words concerning the theory of Dunjia. Yet, mostpeople don't understand the meaning exactly till now.

    In Three-Dynasty Times the famous military counsellor Zhu Ge Liang applied Eight TrigramArrangement in the battle field and won many times of success.

    In Dun Jia(or Dunjia) theory, we use a kind of direction chart called Pan, which is drawed as asquare divided into nine blocks( 3 x 3. eight directions and centre ). In each directional block,one of the eight gates is positioned. We put away Jia(because of its holiness) and use othernine stems to put them into Dun Jia Pan chart at first, and after several process of making, Jiacomes into the Pan chart from one of the eight gates. And that's why this method is called QiMen Dun Jia.

    Later due to the wide application of Dunjia this divination approach gradually broke its ownboundary and gained application in disease diagnosis, business desicion, agricultural divination,etc.

    Why Dunjia be Used for Divination?

    Any divination approaches, whatever forms they assume, are models set up to imitate the socialsociety, the nature and the universe, etc. Dunjia is a mathematic and physical model set up byincorporating heaven aspect, earth aspect, human aspect and unexpected aspect, the timeelements and space elements. There are basic nine Yang Dun Ju and nine Yin Dun Ju whichprovide us a dynamic unified model to imitate all transformations and changes for universalthings. Therefore it can be used to divine the society, nature, individual life time or all whichstays out of human's reasoning ability. By calculation we know there are altogether 216,000 Jusand ancient Chinese people hope that 216,000 Jus can imitate most part of situation in thispractical world.

    This is one of the most typical characteristics of Dunjia. In ancient age, those who won usingDunjia tried to keep it as top-secret, and suppressed Dunjia-masters to prevent from Dunjia-secret leaking to the enemies of the governors.

    Many Dunjia-masters were arrested, but they'd never made the secret of Dunjia clear.

    Basic Background

    1. Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams

    1-1. Hevenly Stems

    Most people are familair with Heavenly Stems, there are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin,

    Ren and Gui. For Western people, they may feel difficult to understand the meaning andremember them. In fact, ten Heavenly Stems have close connection with the movements of sun.It was heard that Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches were created by Da Nao, a verymysterious figure in ancient China.The following lists the general meaning of ten HeavenlyStems:

    Jia: Bud - the sign of growth

    Yi: Sprout - the spread of growth, bursting forth from Earth

    1-4. The application of ten Heavenly Stems in Dunjia

    Besides the time meaning represented by the ten Heavenly Stems, each Heavenly Stem hashidden meaning which denotes the personalized military force. Jia denotes the general whooften hides in the military force arrangements. Just on account of this it is called Dunjia--Dunmeans hidden in Chinese, Jia indicates the first Heavenly Stem Jia. Yi, Bing and Ding are oftencalled Three Wonders. In fact, they are three important assistant commanders close to thegeneral. In modern military framework, they are similiar to the headquater, political departmentand logistic department. Sometimes we can understand them as the following below: Yi is the

    idea man, Bing is the general's bodyguard, and Ding is the logistic officer.

    Sometimes we can regard the three as the arm forces often appearing suddenly.

    1-6. San QiSan Qi means three high-valued wonderful commanders or enforcements and consists of (sunwonder), (Moon wonder) and (star wonder).

    PART TWO

    2-1. The Arrangement of San Qi and Liu Yi in Nine PalacesSan Qi and Liu Yi, nine in total, will fall into nine palaces in a succession. They are , , , , , , , , .Among them , , , , , , each has one Jia general or one of five Jia commanders hiding under it--they are Jia-Zi, Jia-Xu, Jia-Shen, Jia-Wu, Jia Chen and Jia-Yin. When Jia-Zi falls into onepalace (for example, No. 4 palace) in a Yang Dun Ju, we call it is a No. 4 Yang Du Ju.

    2-2. Ju

    Ju means situation. In Dunjia method, there are cyclic numbers on year, month, day and hour ofDunjia calendar. For example, Ju number of the date February 2, 1996 is 9, Yang Dun Ju. Itmeans JiaZi falls in the No. 9 palace.To know one day is Yang Dun Ju or Yin Dun Ju and the Junumber people can look for the Dunjia calender. That is very important.

    2-3. Yin Dun and Yang Dun

    There are two ways of heavenly Qi's moving, Yin Dun and Yang Dun. Both are concerned withmoving of Earth around the sun.

    Yin Dun Yin Dun is a period from summer solstice to next winter solstice. When during theYin Dun period, Yin energy is born and increasing its power day by day.Yang Dun

    Yang Dun is a period from winter solstice to next summer solstice. During theYang Dun period, Yang energy is increasing.

    This circulation of energy concerned with time can be comprehend as revolution of earth likefollowing:

    Ju Shu ( situation numbers ) consists of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. It goes descendantly underYin Dun period, and ascendantly under Yang Dun period like following:

    The aboved knowledge talked about the Earthly Disk and how to arrange the Liu Yi and ThreeWonders in nine palaces and that is not enough. In ancient China, people held all things have toaccept influence from heaven, earth and artificial aspect. Heavenly Disk represents theinfluence coming from above. There are altogether nine stars, each stands for a differentinfluence, here we call them as Zhi FuZhi Fu. Please read the following chart:

    Tian Peng (): water element, corresponding to Kan trigram, has close connection to theappearace of theft. So, it is an inauspicious star. When Tian Peng falls in one palace, peopleshould construct dam, or defence facilities or strengthen the stronghold in order to preventsomething happening. It is not good to travel far or do business because the theft may happen.

    Tian Rui (): earth element, Yin, has close connection with epidemic. So, sometimes we call it asa disease star. When Tian Rui stays in one palace, people should receive teachings oradmonishment, make friends, stay in the original place, abstain from arm force deployment, nomarriage, no quarrel, no travel far, no new construction, etc.

    Tian Cong (): wood element, yang, has close connection with kind donation, doing kind deeds,or agricultural activities. It is an auspicious star. When Tian Cong dwells in one palace, it is goodfor military action, battle or fights. Beside these all is inauspicious.Tian Fu (): wood element, yang, has close connection with cultrual education. It is a veryausoicious star. Whe Tian Fu dwells in one palace, it is auspicious for travel, business,marriage, construction, especially study progress, social status ascendence and culture andeducation development.Tian Qin (): earth element, yang, auspicious for all things because it dwells in the central earthpalace which can gives rise to all.

    Tian Xin (): metal element, yin, has close connection with leadership capability, scheming,desease treatment and military deployment. t is an auspicious star.

    Tian Zhu (): metal element, yin, has close connection with killings, strange things, mysteriousmatters, damage. It is an inauspicious star. When Tian Zhu falls in one palace, people shouldstrengthen their garrison, train their forces, prepare for the bad. It is not good for travel far, dobusiness, otherwise loss, injury, unfortunate things will happen.

    Tian Ren (): earth element, yang, an auspicious star. When Tian Ren dwells in one palace, it isgood for offering teaching to general people, pacificate people, crack down upon insurgence ormobsters. Also good for business, marriage, social status.Tian Ying (): fire element, yin, has close connection with outragous behavior, heated situation,fire and blood. It is a neutral star. When Tian Ying dwells in one palace it is good for planing,dropping a visit to high officials, but it is bad if people want fortune, social status possession,

    marriage or travel.2-6. Human Disk

    Human disk means the eight Gates which summarize all possible influence from human beings.

    Return home after work of the day. It's time to go to bed. It is an agent of Chain-Trigram, andalso represents Xu-branch and Hai-branch. This gate is useful for any purposes. Kai denotes allthings are prosperous, metal elements,1

    People are in sleep. It is an agent of Kan-Trigram, and also represents Zi-branch. This gate isuseful for any purposes.

    2 - 7. Guard Disk

    There are altogether 8 Guards used in Dunjia, which summarize the possible influence from

    mysterious aspect or celestial powers. We call them Zhi Shi Zhi Shi. In Yang Dun Ju the eightGuards will line up in the following sequance::

    The following gives the explanation as to each of the Guard:

    Zhi Fu (): earth element, central position, the commander of all other Guards. When it falls inone palace, all evil things will flee without any trace.Teng She (): fire element, south, hypocratic and crafty Guard. Stands for hypocratic characters,acrimony speech. Responsible for strange, hypocratic and dreadful things.

    Tai Yin (): metal element, west, the sheltering Guard. Of obscure and invisible attributes. WhereTai Yin comes upon it is suitable for planning, scheming, plotting, etc. and for taking shelter andhide the military forces.

    Liu He (): wood element, east, the protection Guard. Its character is unclouded and amiable.Where it falls upon it is suitable for marriage arrangement, discussing business, negotiation, etc.Bai Hu (): metal element, west, atrocious Guard. Apt to killing in most of situation, Responsiblefor arm forces deployment, killings, epidemics, traffic accidents. Under it there hids Gou Chen.

    Xuan Wu ():water element, north, crafty sycophant or thief. Prefer to stealing and clandestinelove affairs. Responsible for thieft, going into exile, quarrel. Under it there hides the Zhu Que.

    Jiu Di (): earth element, central position, the common mother of all things. Its charater is tame,quiet, pliable. Where it comes upon it is suitable for planting, dwelling, stationing arm forces.Jiu Tian (): metal element, positioned high up as like the heaven. Valiant Guard. Very strongcharacter and prefer to taking action. Where it comes upon it is suitable for deploying armforces, battle, travel.

    PART THREE

    3 - 1. How to Set Up One Ju?

    On August 20, 2000 one person dropped a visit. The time is 4:10PM.

    A. The First Step:

    People should learn such basic methods used for finding the Heavenly Stem and EarthlyBranch and that is very important for the Dunjia divination. Here people should look for aChinese lunar calender to find the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of August 20, 2000. Theresult is: Xin-Si () year, Bing-Shen () month, Yi-Mou () day.

    Then we should get to know the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the time 4:10PM. It is

    Jia-Shen () .

    So, we get the result of Xin-Si () year, Bing-Shen () month, Yi-Mou () and Jia-Shen () time.

    .The Second Step:

    By looking over the twenty-four solar terms we know it is the term of Beginning of Autumn.Beginning of Autumn is divided into three durations: upper period, middle period and lowerperiod, each lasting 5 days. August 20, 2000 is within the middle period and the beginning markof the middle period is August 19, 2000, it is Jia-Yin () day. For all the three periods, we shoulduse 2,5 and 8 Ju, Yin Dun. Accordingly we know August 20, 2000 is number 5 Yin Dun Ju.

    C. The Third Step:

    Now we should proceed to arrange San Qi and Liu Yi in the nine palaces. Yin Dun Ju we shouldchoose the number sequence of 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 when we arrange San Qi and Liu Yi. Becauseit is number 5 Yin Dun Ju we should first place Jia-Zi (), the general, in the number 5 palace.Jia-Zi is hiding under Wu detachment, therefore we just write down Wu () in the number 5palace. Then Ji () in number 4 palace, Geng () in number 3 palace, Xin () in number 2 palace,

    Ren () in number 1 palace, Gui () in number 9 palace, Ding () in number 8 palace, Bing () innumber 7 palace, Yi () in number 6 palace. Please see the following figure which shows theEarthly Disk.

    D. The Fourth StepWe should learn how to find the Zhi Fu () and Zhi Shi (), then arrange all Heavenly stars andeight Gates in the nine palace.It is Jia-Shen time. Jian Shen itself is the beginning time for one time period and so we don'tneed to waste any time. The beginning time of Jia-Shen hides under Geng detachment innumber 3 palace. Corresponding to number 3 it is nothing but Tian-Chong () Star which is theZhi Fu (). Corresponding to number 3 it is Injury Gate () which is the Zhi Shi () .

    E. The Fifth Step

    Now we should arrange Heavenly stars in their regular sequence: Tian-Peng (), Tian-Ren (),Tian- Chong (), Tian-Fu (), Tian-Ying (), Tian- Rui () and Tian-Qin ()--they are always together--

    Tian-Zhu (), Tian-Xin () . They always line up in a clockwise sequence. Because it is Jia-Shentime which hides under the Liu Yi Geng () we should bring Geng with Tian-Chong (). Please seethe figure which show how the Heavenly Stars arrange.

    F. The Sixth Step

    Now we should learn how to arrange eight Gates in nine palaces.We know the Zhi-Fu () is Injury Gate () who dwells in number 3 palace. The regular sequence ofeight Gates is as follows: Xiu (), Sheng (), Shang (), Du (), Jing (), Shi (), Jing (), Kai (). Thenplease see the following figure:

    G: The Seventh Step

    This step we should arrange eight Guards in nine palaces. Here we should know Zhi-Shi ()always follow the Zhi-Fu () to find its starting point, then line up the regular sequence clockwisein Yang Dun Ju and counterclockwise in Yin Dun Ju.     4 - 1. How to Analyze One Ju.People should know the emblematic meaning of each sign used in one Ju and their interactionresults. In one palace there stay Earthly disk, Heavenly disk, Human disk and eight Guardswhich summarize the possible influence that can have effects upon one situation. In ancientChina, people hold the viewpoints that human beings are one part of the nature without anydivision. It is a complete entity. They also hold that the whole nature has its own pulse that beatcontinuously as like a human being. Ancient Chinese doctore can know the problem hidden inthe body by feeling the pulse. Yet, how to feel the pulse of the nuture? And is it possible to dothat?

    Dunjia methods provide one tool for feeling the pulse of the nuture and from it some people canknow something hidden in it.     What is Dunjia?

    Qi Men Dun Jia (or Qimendunjia) is one of the three most powerful divination methods, the othertwo being --Tai Yee and Liu Ren. These divination methods are used to discern both good andbad luck in relation to time and space (direction). Tai Yee is used to divine events that affectsocieties, such as earthquake, weather effects like hurricanes, massacres, natural disasters,etc. Qi Men is generally used for military action but, can be applied to competitive environmentsin making the right strategic decision in ever-changing situations. Liu Ren is mostly used fordivining general daily events that affect our own daily lives.

    Qi usually means mysterious or strange, but in this context it means valuable or holy. Menmeans a gate, and Dun means hidden or escaped (to make hidden). Jia is the first of the tenHeavenly stems and is considered the most sacred in this method.

    These three oracles use very special charts to divine and give conclusions. They all useHeavenly stems, Earthly branches, He Tu, Luo Shu, Eight Trigrams, Emblematic elements anddivine number, etc. and most of these principles are explained below.

    Dunjia can be divided into Year School Dunjia, Month School Dunjia, Day School Dunjia andTime School Dunjia in terms of time. In terms of reasoning methods it should be divided intoLine-Up Palace Dunjia and Jump-in-Palace Dunjia.

In the ancient book "TheSong from Old Fishing Man" carried the following story: Emperor XuanYuan fought a fiercebattle with Shi You for many years. In a dream he dreamt Heaven gave him an oracle and

    XuanYuan then paid his respects upon a sacrificial platform and practised such arts which soonbrought success. He ordered his military man Feng Hou to write down these arts and this wasthe beginning of Dunjia.

    The popularity of this method spread far and wide from the late Spring And Autumn To TheWarring States period - a time when many states fought endless battles to expand theirterritories. Also Sun Zi's book The Art of War carried similar information concerning the theory ofDunjia. Yet, most people didn't understand the exact meaning until now.

    In Three-Kingdom Times the famous military counsellor Zhu Ge Liang applied Eight Trigram orBa Gua Arrangement on the battle field and won huge success. As a result, the book the "ThreeKingdoms" is necessary reading for intelligence experts and politicians around the world.

    In each directional block, one of the eight gates is positioned. We put away Jia (because of itsholiness) and use the other nine stems to put them into Dun Jia Pan chart at first, and afterseveral process of making, Jia comes into the Pan chart from one of the eight gates. And that'swhy this method is called Qi Men Dun Jia. Later due to the wide application of Dunjia thisdivination approach gradually broke its own boundary and gained application in healthdiagnosis, business decisions, agricultural divination, etc.

    Why is Dunjia used for Divination?

    Any divination process, whatever forms they assume, are models set up to imitate the socialsociety, nature and the universe, etc. Dunjia is a mathematical and physical model set up toincorporate Heavenly, Earth, Human and unexpected aspects, as well as time and space ordirectional elements.

    There are nine basic Yang Dun Ju and nine Yin Dun Ju which produce a dynamic unified modelto imitate all transformations and changes experienced in life. Therefore it can be used to divinefor society, nature, individual life time or all which is unknown to Man. By calculation we knowthere are altogether 216,000 Jus and ancient Chinese people hoped that 216,000 Jus can cover

    most situations in this practical world.

    One of the most typical characteristics of Dunjia was that in ancient times, those who usedDunjia tried to keep it top-secret, they subsequently suppressed Dunjia-masters to preventDunjia- secrets leaking to the enemies of the governors. Many Dunjia-masters were arrested,but they'd never made the secret of Dunjia clear. That is until now.

    How to calculate the chart

    1. Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams- Basic Background

    1-1. Heavenly Stems

    Most people are familiar with the Heavenly Stems, which are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng,Xin, Ren and Gui. For Western people, may find it difficult to understand the meaning and toremember them. In fact, ten Heavenly Stems have close connection with the movements of sun.It was heard that Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches were created by Da Nao, a verymysterious figure in ancient China.     Besides the time meaning represented by the ten Heavenly Stems, each Heavenly Stem hashidden meanings, which denote military forces, operations or officers. So, Jia denotes the

    general who often hides in the military force arrangements. On account of this, this system iscalled Dunjia - -Dun means hidden in Chinese, Jia indicates the first Heavenly Stem Jia. Yi, Bingand Ding are often called Three Wonders. In fact, they are three important assistantcommanders close to the general. In a modern military framework, they are similar to theheadquarters, policy department and logistical department. Sometimes we can understand themas the following: Yi is the idea man, Bing is the general's bodyguard, and Ding is the logisticofficer.

    Sometimes we can regard these three as reinforcements that often appear suddenly.

    So, ancient Chinese people regard sixty years as one cycle. In one cycle Jia should appear sixtimes, they are Jia-Zi, Jia-Xu, Jia-Shen, Jia-Wu, Jia-Chen and Jia-Yin.     San Qi and Liu Yi, nine in total, will fall into nine palaces in a succession. They are Wu, Ji,Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing and Yi. Among them Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren and Gui have oneJia general or one of the five Jia commanders hiding under it-- they are Jia-Zi, Jia-Xu, Jia-Shen,Jia-Wu, Jia Chen and Jia-Yin. When Jia-Zi falls into one palace (for example, No. 4 palace) in aYang Dun Ju, we call it is a No. 4 Yang Du Ju.

    2 - 2. Ju

    Ju means situation. A Dunjia calendar, has cyclical numbers for the year, month, day and hour.

    For example, the Ju number for February 2, 1996 was 9. This is the Yang Dun Ju and at thistime it falls in the No. 9 palace. It is essential that people consult the Dunjia calendar to knowwhether a day is either a Yang Dun Ju or Yin Dun Ju and what the Ju number is for this period.

    2 - 3. Yin Dun and Yang Dun

    There are two motions of heavenly Qi, namely Yin Dun and Yang Dun. Both are concerned withthe movement of the Earth around the sun. The Yin Dun period is from the summer solstice tothe winter solstice and this is when Yin qi is born and becomes stronger day by day. Yang Dunis a period from the winter solstice to the next summer solstice and this is when Yang energyincreases.

    This circulation of energy concerned with time can be understood as the revolution of earth likefollowing:

    Ju Shu ( situation numbers ) consists of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The cyclical numbersdescend during Yin Dun period, like following:

    2 - 5. Heavenly Disk

    The Earthly Disk referred to above with the arrangement of Liu Yi and Three Wonders in ninepalaces, is not enough as this only concerns matter, which is changed by astral influences overtime. In ancient China, people held that all things are changed by Heaven, earth and the effectof man. The Heavenly Disk therefore represents this influence coming from above, via theelectromagnetic spectrum.     Tian Rui: earth element, indicates sickness. So, sometimes we call it the "disease star". WhenTian Rui stays in one palace, people should receive teachings or admonishment, make friends,stay home, abstain from military deployment, postpone marriage, refrain from quarrels, longdistance travel, new construction, etc.

    Tian Cong: wood element, yang, indicates charity and donations, doing kind deeds, oragricultural activities. It is an auspicious star. When Tian Cong dwells in one palace, it is goodfor military action, battles or legal issues. For all else it is inauspicious.

    Tian Fu: wood element, yang, has close connection with cultural education. It is a veryauspicious star. When Tian Fu dwells in one palace, it is auspicious for travel, business,marriage, construction, especially study progress, increasing social status, cultural andeducational development.Tian Qin: earth element, yang, auspicious for all things because it dwells in the central earthpalace which can give rise to all.

    Tian Xin: metal element, yin, relates to leadership capability, scheming, medical treatment andmilitary deployment. t is an auspicious star.Tian Zhu: metal element, yin, indicates death, strange occurrence, mysterious matters, damage.It is an inauspicious star. When Tian Zhu falls in one palace, people should strengthen their

    garrison, train their forces, prepare for the worst. It is not good to travel far, do business,otherwise loss, injury or unfortunate things will happen.

    Tian Ren: earth element, yang, an auspicious star. When Tian Ren dwells in one palace, it isgood for beneficence and studying, settling disputes, legal enforcement's especially injustice's.Also good for business, marriages and social status.

    Tian Ying: fire element, yin, indicates outrageous behaviour, heated situations, fire and blood. Itis a neutral star. When Tian Ying dwells in one palace it is good for planing, visiting high officials,but it is unlucky for wealth, social status improvement, marriage or travel.2 - 6. Human Disk

    Human disk means the eight Gates which summarise all possible influence from human beings.

    The following gives an explanation as to the influence of each Guard:

    Zhi Fu: earth element, central position, the commander of all other Guards. When it falls in one

    palace, all evil things will flee without any trace.

    Teng She: fire element, south, Hippocratic and crafty Guard. Stands for hypocritical charactersand acrimony.. Responsible for strange, hypocritical and dreadful things.Tai Yin: metal element, west, the sheltering Guard. Of obscure and invisible attributes. WhereTai Yin comes upon it is suitable for planning, scheming, plotting, etc. and for taking shelterespecially for military forces.

    Liu He: wood element, east, the protection Guard. Its character is unclouded and amiable.Where it falls upon it is suitable for marriage arrangement, discussing business, negotiation, etc.Bai Hu: metal element, west, atrocious Guard. Apt to killing in most situations, Responsible forarmed forces deployment, killings, epidemics, traffic accidents. Under it there hides Gou Chen.

    Xuan Wu: water element, north, crafty sycophant or thief. Prefers stealing and clandestine loveaffairs. Responsible for theft, going into exile, quarrel. Under it there hides the Zhu Que.

    Jiu Di: earth element, central position, the common mother of all things. Its character is tame,quiet, pliable. Where it comes upon is suitable for planting, dwelling, stationing arm forces.Jiu Tian: metal element, positioned high up as like the heaven. Valiant Guard. Very strongcharacter and prefers taking action. Where it comes upon it is suitable for deploying arm forces,battle and travel.

    3 - 1. How to Set Up One Ju?

    On 20th August 2000 a person dropped in for a reading. The time was 4:10PM.

    A. The First Step:

    To use this method you must learn the basic methods used for finding the Heavenly Stem and

    Earthly Branch for a particular day as this is essential for Dunjia divination. You should consult aChinese lunar calendar to find the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for 20th August 2000.The result will be: Xin-Si (Metal Snake) year, Bing-Shen (Fire Monkey) month, Yi-Mou (WoodRabbit) day. Then we should get to know the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the time4:10PM. It is Jia-Shen (Wood Monkey) .

    By looking over the twenty-four solar terms we know that this date falls in the term of Li Chun"Beginning of Autumn". Beginning of Autumn is divided into three duration's: upper period,middle period and lower period, each lasting 5 days. August 20, 2000 is within the middle periodand the beginning mark of the middle period is August 19, 2000, this was a Jia-Yin day. For

    these three periods, we should use the cyclical numbers of 2,5 and 8 Ju, Yin Dun. Accordinglywe know August 20, 2000 is number 5 Yin Dun Ju.

    C. The Third Step:

    Now we should proceed to arrange San Qi and Liu Yi in the nine palaces. As this date fallswithin the Yin Dun Ju we should choose the number sequence of 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 when wearrange San Qi and Liu Yi. Because it is number 5 Yin Dun Ju we should first place Jia-Zi, the

    general, in the number 5 palace. Jia-Zi is hiding under Wu detachment, therefore we just writedown Wu in the number 5 palace. Then Ji in number 4 palace, Geng in number 3 palace, Xin innumber 2 palace, Ren in number 1 palace, Gui in number 9 palace, Ding in number 8 palace,Bing in number 7 palace, Yi in number 6 palace.     D. The Fourth Step:

    You next need to learn how to find the Zhi Fu and Zhi Shi, then arrange all Heavenly stars andeight Gates in the nine palace.It is the Jia-Shen Hour. Jia Shen itself is the beginning of one time period and so we don't needto waste any time discovering Which Jia this time comes under.. The beginning time of Jia-ShenHides under Geng detachment in number 3 palace. The Zhi Fu corresponding to number 3 isnothing the Tian-Cong Star. The Gate corresponding to number 3 is the Injury Gate this is the

    Zhi Shi .

    E. The Fifth Step:

    Now we should arrange the Heavenly stars in their regular sequence which is: Tian-Peng , Tian-Ren, Tian- Chong, Tian-Fu, Tian-Ying, Tian- Rui and Tian-Qin --are always together in the samepalace--Tian-Zhu, Tian-Xin . They always line up in a clockwise sequence. Because it is Jia-

    G: The Seventh Step

    In this step we arrange the eight Guards in the nine palaces. Here we should know Zhi-Shialways follows Zhi-Fu to find its starting point. We then follow the regular sequence eitherclockwise in Yang Dun Ju or counterclockwise in Yin Dun Ju. Zhi-Fu is Injury Gate which dwells

    in number 3 palace. So the starting point for the eight Guards sequence will fall into number 3palace, it is Zhi-Fu. Because it is a Yin Dun Ju we should line up the eight Guardscounterclockwise as follows: Zhi-Fu, Teng-She, Tai-Yin Liu He, Bai-Hu, Xuan-Wu, Jiu-di, Jiu-tian. Please see the arrangement below:

    We have just finished setting up one Ju based upon the time, day, month and year when theperson arrived for divination. There are other arrangements of Ju settings but here we generallyadopt the most popular time-school Dunjia. Next you have to analyze such Ju.

    Analysis

    To understand the results from the reading people should know the layered meaning of each

    sign used in one Ju and the results of their interaction, we list a couple of examples of thisbelow. In each palace there are also the Earthly, Heavenly and Human disks with the EightGuards, which summarize the possible influence that can affect a situation. In ancient China,people held the viewpoint that human beings are an integral part of nature. With mankindNature is a complete entity. They also held that nature has its own pulse which beatscontinuously, just like a human being. Similarly ancient Chinese doctore could diagnose aproblem hidden in the body just by feeling the pulse. Yet, how do we feel the pulse of nature?And is it possible to do that?

    Dunjia methods provide one tool for feeling the pulse of nature and from this we can discoversomething hidden in it. In fact, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches provide the very basicfoundation for this to become true. The pulse of nature can show up in so many different waysand that is why Dunjia can offer so many useful tips when people wish to know so manydifferent things.
