Introducing SAP HANA SPS 09: The Platform for All Applications

SAP HANA SPS 09 provides numerous exciting functionalities developed by SAP, as well as additional capabilities provided by SAP co-innovation partners. This new release renews our commitment to accelerating cloud adoption, providing the most powerful platform for both transactional and analytical applications, creating instant value from big data assets, and enabling co-innovation with our customers and partners.

When it comes to cloud enablement, SAP HANA SPS 09 lets you run multiple independent SAP HANA databases in one single SAP HANA system (SID) and mange as a single unit. We call this functionality Multi-tenant database containers and it is specifically designed to simplify database administration, while maintaining a strong separation and isolation of data, users, and system resources, among individual tenant databases. This innovation allows you to dramatically lower the TCO of your installations–whether that be on-premise or in a cloud environment. Additionally, co-innovations with partners such as IBM, Hitachi and Unisys offers a broad array of secure and professionally managed SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) services to accelerate cloud deployments and reduce migration risk.

SAP HANA SPS 09 greatly improves the application development experience with a number of new enhancements to both tools and the core platform. On the tools’ front, SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench has new SQLScript editor, SQL Script debugger and a Calculation View editor, while SAP HANA Studio has extended its code completion capabilities and offers end-to-end debugging. Additionally, the Visual Application Function Modeler (AFM), allows developers to build reusable

Page 2: What is New in Sap Hana Sps 09

application functions based on complex algorithms. The AFM provides prebuilt integration with predictive analysis libraries (PAL), business function libraries (BFL) and R, allowing developers to easily tailor the existing algorithms to specific analytical application needs and then run them in SQLScript.

On the platform front, SAP HANA SPS 09 turbocharges advanced analytics with many new innovations. It exposes to developers a native Graph Engine to efficiently persist and analyze property graphs without duplicating data. This simplifies the analysis of complex relationships and the uncovering of new insights. Additionally, SAP HANA SPS 09 includes Nokia/HERE maps and spatial content to facilitate the development of applications that leverage location-based services. Text mining capabilities have also been added to the platform to help identify relationships among documents. As an example, documents can be stored, indexed and ranked based on a reference document or key terms.

Big data and IoT open new challenges and opportunities for businesses. SAP HANA SPS 09 comes packed with new functionalities to help your company to operate in this new reality and create instant value from the variety of your big data assets. The new smart data streaming capability captures, filters, analyzes and takes action on millions of events (streaming data) per second, in real-time. To optimize available resources, smart data streaming can be configured to pass high value data in SAP HANA for instant analysis and direct remaining data to Hadoop – for historical and trending analysis. Of course, HANA can analyze data in both HANA and Hadoop at the same time through Smart Data Access, but HANA can also now call a Hadoop Map Reduce job directly from HANA and then bring the result set back to HANA from Hadoop/HDFS for additional analysis. Another powerful feature is dynamic tiering, which can move warm data from memory to disk – still in columnar format, optimizing in-memory usage for extremely large data volumes. This will enable customers to achieve great performance on hot data and great price-performance on hot and cold data. Moreover, smart data integration and smart data quality in SAP HANA SPS09 enables the provisioning filtering, transformation, cleansing and enrichment of data from multiple sources into SAP HANA, eliminating the need for a separate ETL or replication stages . Pre-built adapters are available for common data sources such as IBM DB2, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, OData, Hadoop and Twitter, and an open SDK is also available to build new adapters. In addition, special adapters are provided to consume SAP Business Suite data from databases such as IBM DB2, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server. Smart data integration is architected for cloud deployment requiring no firewall exceptions to provision data to HANA in cloud.

Openness is an exciting theme in SAP HANA SPS 09. You can now choose from 400+ SAP HANA configurations supplied by 15 different SAP partners. This is 4 times the number of server configuration options we had in August of 2013. Co-innovations with partners such ad IBM and Hitachi has allowed us to leverage system virtualization at new levels with the support of LPARs for optimal system resource utilization. Scale-up configurations have also expanded with new certified appliances from Cisco, HP and SGI. Additionally relaxed hardware requirements, support for lower cost Intel E5 processors, and new guidelines to utilize existing networking components – part of SAP HANA Tailored Datacenter Integration

Page 3: What is New in Sap Hana Sps 09

– provides a new choice to start small and grow your configurations as needed, reducing adoption barriers and improving TCO for SAP HANA.

Feedback from both press and analysts on SAP HANA SPS09 has been extremely positive. Read the full press release announcing the new HANA innovations.

Very nice to hear this, let us know where I can find more detailed info blogs on SPS9.

Is there any news on hierarchies and hierarchy variables with this new version?

Regards,

Siva

Silva,

we don’t introduce specific new capabilities for hierarchies in SPS09. However since SPS07 dynamic hierarchies supporting parameter driven hiearchy-attributes and -properties (root-node) have been available, also since then hierarchies can be analytic privilege-driven.

Christoph

Hi Earesh,

Multi-tenancy would provide an alternative to some of the virtualization use cases so it is definitely worth considering if you are considering virtualization for workload separation and splitting up a server or clusters.

We just certified Hitachi (HDS) L-Par for hardware partitioning of SAP HANA Servers about 10 days. Additionally SAP HANA on IBM Power is now in controlled availability piloting which also support L-Par.

In regard to planned changes with SPS9 to extending support for existing software virtualization scenarios, we do not have any changes planned for SPS9. The major updates were with SPS8 in relation to the productive support for VMware etc.

I hope this helps,

Mike

Hi Azzedine,

there will be some basic workload management capabilities introduced with SPS09 that better handle OLAP/OLTP resource contentions. It is not mentioned explicitly in the blog.

Hello Michael,

I assume Multi Data base installation is only available for cloud yet. But i read somewhere that soon SAP is rolling out multi data base installations on single HANA box. I am refering to the applications not present in white list- example- 2 BW systems on one HANA box.

Hi Vivek,

While Multi-tenancy is very attractive and a very necessary feature for cloud vendors, we do plan to make the Multi-tenant Database Containers (MDC) available with SPS09 for on-premise use too as we see a lot of value to have a single database with multiple applications deployed within it and each independently managed and isolated from each other both in production and non-production landscapes.

In regards to the infamous white-list, expect to see a new SAP note for MDC coming soon with the release of SPS09.

I hope this helps,

Mike

Mike, all great news!

I would like to get a deeper understanding of database containers: implementation, container movement tooling and processes, etc.

Is there any documentation available for it yet that you can point me to?

Also on Dynamic Data Tiering, is there any documentation out?

On both of these I’ve only found so far high level info.

Finally, any session you would advise for the TechEd && d-code Berlin focusing on these two topics?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mary,

We will release a lot of information on the day that we ship SPS9 and this will include the “what’s new” documents, the online help, in-depth details of all new features and of course the software to download.

Page 16: What is New in Sap Hana Sps 09

Also we are working on posting the TechEd TEC101 Roadmap session that mostly covers SPS9 too as it was not on the flash drive given out at the event.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi, Can you clarify if mutli-temperature data management will be relevant for business suite/ ERP as well? Or is this only for BW?

Hi Vaidhya,

Dynamic Tiering is available for all applications and therefore the integration into their application configuration and data models is owned by each application. I do know that SAP BW is planning to utilize this with their next SP. You would have to contact the individual application Product managers/owners to get their roadmap and timelines.Cheers,

Mike.
