Mary, Bearer of the Light‘To Jesus, through Mary…’This is what our Blessed

Mother wants of us. We go to her so that she may guide us to Jesus. She considers herself a vessel, a simple means to achieve our end – Jesus, who is our Light!

Being the mother of Jesus, she carried Him for nine months. Of all human beings, she was the first to feel and experience the presence of Jesus in her life. She bore Him in a manger for there was no place to stay for the night. All the inns and other places were occupied for the census.

She knew that her Child is God. She did not need to undergo any process of purification, for her pregnancy was made possible by the power of the Holy Spirit But then, she remained obedient to the law. This brings to our

Ma. Rosario L. Rote-Tejadaconsciousness the humility and obedience of Mary.

“Be it done unto me according to your word…” These are Mary’s words when she accepted the news from the Angel Gabriel that she was to be the mother of God. In all humility and obedience, she said her ‘Fiat!’ It was just like saying, ‘Yes, Lord, do with me as You will!’ These simple s e n t e n c e s carry such a great burden of responsibility, yet Mary remained open to the will of God. Truly humble, all she did was ‘to

treasure all these in her heart.’ It was a decision she made which entailed her obedience and humility till the end, with whatever came along with her ‘Fiat!’

Mary’s virtues of humility and obedience, even her whole

life, point to us the Light – Jesus – whom she

bore. When Jesus

performed His first miracle at Cana, Mary just told Jesus ‘…they have no

more wine.’ It was not yet time for Jesus to perform miracles.

Moreover, Mary was already telling the

waiters to ‘…do as He tells you.’ So, even if His

time has not

yet come, He could refuse His mother. That is also what we will get to achieve if we keep that tender devotion to our Blessed Mother and follow what Jesus tells us.

Mary carries Jesus, the Light, to illumine this dark world we are in. Let us stay close to Mary, our guide, for us to reach and hold that Light – Jesus – in our lives. Let us imitate and live her virtues of humility and obedience so that one day, we will find ourselves sharing and actively involving ourselves with the Works of Salvation by being partakers of the Body of Jesus Christ, of Which we are all members.

Our devotion to Mother Mary, to be correct, must not end with her; rather, it must lead us to Jesus.

No mother has ever suffered for her children more than the Blessed Virgin Mary did. God the Father chose her as the Mother of Jesus, our beloved Savior, and as the mother and co-redeemer of all mankind. She meekly said her “Yes” to God and did everything she could to retain us in God’s graces.

She is known as the Blessed Virgin of Fatima, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Immaculate Concepcion, and what can I say, her most blessed title: Our Lady of Dolors. There are more sacred names for her because of her methods in doing her work as the

Mother of the Savior of men. The Archdiocese of Jaro

is most blessed because Our Lady of Candles came to us not in full glory, but floating on a river when she was taken, lovingly washed, and placed on an altar overlooking the plaza.

After she was duly honored, she grew in height every year and many devotees make pilgrimage to witness and feel her love and concern.

Mama Mary lives in the fifteen mysteries of the holy rosary and she must be smiling every time she hears our prayers.

Today, we need to imitate her humility, her perseverance, her piety, her prayerfulness, and her

dedication to God.Mama Mary has lighted

her candle of love and it is only fitting that we, too, must do the same. Let us not make excuses for omitting our prayers. Let us not be stagnant Catholics. We have to work as God’s disciples and as Our Lady’s apostles. Light your candle. Keep the flame burning with devotion.

We do not have to go to Church to pray. We can pray anywhere, anytime, alone or with some companions. In order to be prayerful, let us light our candle and follow this suggestion:

Make your heart your chapel, your mind your fertilizer, your hand your tool, your feet your vehicle.

God wants you to go

to places even where no one enjoys to tread.

Observe road signs.Hold Mama Mary’s hand.

Do not let it go.As Mama Mary turned

dirt and darkness of a dirty canal into spiritual wealth in heaven, let us strive to do the same.

Turn the desert into a land of joy. Turn the wilderness into a land of roses. Scatter the perfume of repentance and see converted souls leave the desert of condemnation.

Mama Mary, Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, our beloved Mother, press us to your breast, kiss our tears of joy as we cling to your mantle, our mantle of salvation!

WHAT IS MKK? WHY MKK?Read between the lines

Consider the following lines we read from our national paper: “Filipinos connect with loved ones through call, text, Internet.” Does this indicate our strong need to connect, to belong, and to communicate, and how providential that we have this information technology at our disposal and how well we are using it to serve our need? Or is this a poor substitute to address our deeper need for a face-to-face encounter and meaningful relationships? “More people surf the Web, read horoscopes than Bible.” What does this tell us about our being predominantly Catholic Christian country in Asia? Does this further validate the statement “We are sacramentalized but not evangelized”? How unfortunate that we are not being nourished by the Word of God! And here’s a headline from our local paper: “Proactive measures, not reactive strategies” are the most effective means to maintain peace and order and to eradicate crimes that are increasingly being committed

even in broad daylight. Does it ever occur to us that those suspected, hunted, or convicted criminals are baptized members of our Church; that they belong to our parish and may even reside in our neighborhood? Do we ever feel a connection with them or a responsibility for them? Have we ever considered that the call for New Evangelization also challenges us to seek “proactive measures” in bringing the Gospel to the “unreached”? Just “reading between the lines” that we quoted from both local and national dailies should help us realize the need for, and the importance of, forming and belonging to small Christian communities or what we now call in our archdiocese as Magagmay nga Kristianong Katilingban (MKK). Being part of this so-called Church in the neighborhood will help fulfill our deeper need for connection and communion and will serve as a proactive and effective vehicle for evangelization.

See beyond the statistics

Are not our churches full of people in all our masses on Sundays, even S.R.O. (Standing Room Only) in our cathedral? Does that not indicate that we are doing well already? What is this MKK for? Why make MKK as our pastoral priority? If we believe a

study that was made on how many percent of all baptized Catholics go to mass every Sunday, and that its findings reveal that the national average of Sunday Mass goers in our predominantly Catholic country is 15-20%, this means that the faithful we observe that jam-pack our churches on Sundays are at best only 20% of all the baptized! For me as a

pastor, and I am sure with you, as concerned faithful, our immediate question then would be, “What about the 80% of our flock? How are they being nourished? Supported? Reached out to? Can we be contented with ourselves worshipping Sunday after Sunday knowing that 80% of our members are not with us? Are they not also part of the Body of Christ?” Another disturbing data from the same study:

only 1% to 2% on a national average of these Sunday churchgoers is actively involved in church life or participating in groups, organizations or ministries! Only 1%-2% are ministering to the 98%-99% Catholics; no wonder those who belong to these 1%-2% get tired so easily just attending various meetings! For how long shall we tolerate this reality that only 1%-2% are taking

on the responsibility of leadership and the greater majority are uninvolved or not participating or, worse, not given the opportunity to participate? The 1%-2% actively participating are too small a percentage to be even statistically acceptable! In fact, it is statistically negligible!

Why is this so?

We offer three reasons:

1) PRACTICAL - Among those you see and sit beside with at Mass, how many do you really know personally? Even

just from those living in your neighborhood, and more so from our parish community, how many are you relating with on a personal level? We have grown too many in numbers we hardly know perhaps half of those we worship with on Sundays. If we want to reach out to the 80% and achieve some degree of personal affinity with fellow baptized Christians, we need to move our focus from the parish center to our neighborhood

where majority of our members are.

2) STRUCTURAL – Majority if not all of our church services are found in the parish center, oftentimes dependent on the priests because they are mostly related to the mass and the sacraments. Our organizational structure or so-called structure of participation allows only for 1%-2% of all the baptized to get involved and at best can only reach out to 20% of our members. Even if only 50% of all the baptized will come to

Sunday Mass at the center, we won’t all fit inside the church. If our vision is a participatory church, we

need to have structures of participation all the way to the neighborhood. Our experience of being church is not limited to activities being organized at the center but should become more accessible to people in the barangays.

3) THEOLOGICAL – How many of us ever remember and celebrate our baptismal day when we became children of God and members of Christ’s Mystical Body, the Church? It indicates that we have not fully understood and appreciated what it means to be church and what it really entails to be a baptized Christian. Generally, in spite of

50 years of Vatican II that emphasizes the Church as People of God, we refer to church as building, center-based meetings, celebrations and observances. We also limit our understanding of church as only a noun

when it is also a verb! To be church is an active word, a faith translated into action. We understand “church” as a believing community, not just a place or a day of the week or an activity. It is to live and share our faith “wherever we are, wherever we live and spend most of the time with”. “To be church is a truth lived daily. To be church is to be rooted in daily life.” This comes alive in our MKK where dialogue between faith and daily life is a continuing experience!

Our archdiocesan shared vision-mission

This is the kind of church we find in our archdiocesan shared vision (ASV) ratified in an archdiocesan pastoral assembly held last November 17, 2011:

And in that same pastoral assembly of the same year, we chose as our pastoral priority for the year 2012 the building and strengthening of Small Christian Communities or MKK, which we again

made as our pastoral priority for this year 2013.

Our Parish Identity Statement

In line with our archdiocesan shared vision-mission, we also articulated our parish identity statement as follows: We, the Children of God in the Parish of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in Jaro, envision a united C h r i s t - c e n t e r e d communion of communities that is empowered and participatory, evangelizing, transforming and evolving, and committed towards ho-listic human development and social transformation with concern and focus on the youth and the poor. Hence, in this Year of Faith and at the beginning of the Era of New Evangelization in preparation for our 500th Jubilee, in 2021, of the coming of Christianity to our Philippine shores, we celebrate our parish annual fiesta this year with the theme: “Pagpasanyog sang Pagtuo sa Pagbalay sang Magagmay nga

Kristianong Katilingban” (Strengthening the Faith through Small Christian Communities).What is MKK? According to the Second Plenary Council

of the Philippines, MKKs “are small communities of Christians, usually of families who gather together around the Word of God and the Eucharist. These communities are united to their pastors

but are ministered to regularly by lay leaders. The members know each other by name, and share not only the Word of God and the Eucharist but also their concerns both material and spiritual. They have a strong sense of belongingness and of

responsibility for one another (PCP II, 138).

What are the four essential marks or elements of an MKK?

1) N e i gh b o r h o o d :

What are the advantages when people come together as neighbors? We can give at least four:

• Practical – When members of our MKK are neighbors to one another,

it is easier to organize, follow-up, and monitor because they are familiar with each other. Groupings should be not too big that personal contact is jeopardized, but not too small that meetings cannot push through when 2 or 3 members are absent.

• Same Context – We recognize that our neighborhood is our natural community, the place where we live,

where we spend most of our time, where we are called to practice our faith day in and day out, and where we naturally should get involved and actively participate. Even if we each surround ourselves with high walls, we cannot avoid our neighbor. They do affect our daily life.• Concerned with the Issues and Problems in the Community – Because together with our neighbors we are affected by whatever affects them, be it the peace and order situation, air pollution, gambling, drug addiction,

health and sanitation, or any natural calamity that may strike our community, . They are the nearest to respond to our call for help

in times of emergency.• Gospel’s Call – Jesus tells us in the gospel: “Love your neighbor.” Parable of the Good Samaritan. Our neighbor is not just someone in need but whoever we encounter everyday. We cannot choose our neighbor.

2) Word of God: What good will it do to the community if they share on the Word of God?

• Family of God – Sharing on the Word of God regularly, we experience that we are

not just neighbors to one another but we belong to one family of God.• Disciples of Christ – By reflecting on the Word of God regularly, we learn to live as true disciples of Christ, we grow close to each other, and we become instruments of transformation to one another.• Gospel Lifestyle – God’s Word provides us a blueprint for living, helps us “go against the current” of the world, and protects us from the negative influences of the materialistic and self-centered values around us.• Outward-Looking

– By reflecting on God’s Word we realize that “no man is an island”, there are more people around us that need our love and concern and our lives are more enriched when we serve others.

3) Action: Why is action important?

• No matter how beautiful or deep our insights and reflections may be during our faith

sharing based on the Word of God, if it doesn’t flow into action, then it’s meaningless. You cannot just tell a starving neighbor “May God bless you my brother/sister” without giving him/her something to feed his/her hungry stomach. As St. James puts it, “Faith without action is dead.” We are therefore challenged to give witness to our faith by our actions. We are called to express our faith in service. We are called to get involved and work on issues besetting our world today. Our faith sharing should lead us into community action that addresses the problems

of our neighborhood.

4) Link with the Wider Church: What are the ways our MKKs express this linkage?

• Celebration of the Eucharist and other Sac-raments – The celebra-tion of the Eucharist in the parish center, espe-cially during Christmas, Easter and the parish feast day, expresses very well the unity of the faithful

belonging to various MKKs. The same is true in the celebration of the oth-er sacraments like Con-firmation and Marriage.• Word of God – God’s Word is also one strong link of MKKs with the wider church. Using the Sunday’s gospel, wherever we may be, it is one and the same gospel that we are reflecting and sharing on.• Vision – Being united by one vision of the parish is also a direct linkage. This means that in whatever MKKs they may be, all their activities and meetings are done in the light of the vision of the parish.

• Regular Leaders’ Meeting, Training and Formation – These provide an opportunity for MKKs to share and support one another; a chance to build relationships; an occasion for the priests and pastoral team together to facilitate these meetings so that they can guide these MKKs and journey with them.• A n n i v e r s a r i e s and other Activities – Community celebrations like anniversaries, foundation or MKK Day are meaningful occasions

to foster unity among our MKKs. An MKK newsletter, like our Candlelight may also be circulated to update each other and strengthen the bond among our MKKs with the parish center. If members of our MKKs are not neighbors, even if they do have bible sharing, community action and do notlink with the wider church, they are simply like other lay organizations, movements and associations in our local church. If our MKKs live in the neighborhood, are doing service, and are linked with the wider church but are not rooted in the Word of

God, then they are simply like the cooperatives, homeowners associations, or civic groups. If as neighbors they meet and share on the Word of God and are linked with the wider church but do not have action that deals with common concerns and problems of the community, then our MKKs are simply like the prayer groups, bible study or gospel sharing groups. And if as neighbors they do meet and share regularly on the Word of God, do

some community service but are not linked with the wider church, they are simply like the sects or some cults. They cannot really be called MKKs! Whenever we talk about MKK, we can think of a three-letter word: ALL. Our MKK is for all the baptized, unlike some of our organizations, movements and associations which have only for their members all couples, all youth, all men, all women, all children, or all belonging to some sectors like the differently-abled persons, farmers, fisherfolks, migrants, indigenous people, etc. Our MKK is mass-based, a way by which ALL the baptized have the chance to live out his/her faith and experience

being church on a daily basis. We are fortunate if we belong to an MKK!

MKK facilitates Participative Learning

Consistent with our vision of a participatory church, our MKK employs participative learning process which involves the following:• Every member of the group participates in the process.• Knowledge or truth comes from each person and not just from the one presenting; and therefore a person is enriched by listening to different views and experiences.• The participants are actively involved in the process of learning, rather than passively

listening to the ‘expert’.• Relationships are strengthened between the participants, as well as between the facilitators and participants; thus participative learning nurtures community.• P a r t i c i p a n t s discover the values they presently hold in their lives. They are consequently faced with the challenge of accepting enriched values or choosing new ones.

• The issue at hand is not just discussed, but leads to group decision-making.• In making decisions, participants commit themselves to personal growth, as well as the development of others and thus the promotion of community.• P a r t i c i p a t i v e learning is not merely task-oriented, but results in enrichment and growth of the individuals as persons; this in turn leads to new patterns of behavior. An important consideration in the participative learning process among our MKKs is that the brilliance of the facilitator is not in how brilliant s/he speaks,

but in how well s/he enables the brilliance of the group to shine forth.

What do some official documents of the Church say about MKK?

“The Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC/MKK) are a sign of vitality within the Church, an instrument of formation and evangelization, and a solid starting

point of a new society based on a civilization of love” (Blessed John Paul II in Redemptoris Missio, art. 51).

“In order to bring to all people the Good News of Jesus, as required by a New Evangelization, all the parishes and their small communities should be living cells, places to promote the personal and communitarian encounter with Christ, experience the richness of liturgy, to give initial and permanent Christian formation, and to educate all the faithful in fraternity and charity especially towards the poor” (Proposition 26: From the final list of

the propositions of the Synod of Bishops on the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith released by the Holy See Press Office, October 28, 2012). “In some areas, a form of Christian community living has developed which is termed as ‘Basic Christian Community’… These small communities operating at a still lower level than the parish, allowing for even deeper human and Christian fellowships, are the most

fundamental ecclesial realities” (Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences Colloquium on Ministries, 1977). “The Christian communities we are trying to build are simply the most local incarnation of

the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church. Small Christian Communities are the means by which the Church is brought down to the daily life and concerns of people where they actually live. In them, the Church takes in flesh and blood in the life situations of people” (Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa, 1979). “Our vision of Church as communion, participation, mission, about the Church as priestly, prophetic and kingly people and a Church

of the poor – Church that is renewed – is today finding expression in one ecclesial movement. This is the movement to foster Basic Ecclesial Communities” (Acts and Decrees of PCP II, 137).

This year’s Fiesta Queen is a true-blooded Jareño from a well-known clan. Living up to her name, which is inspired by the Blessed Mother and Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, she exudes the qualities and attributes that is truly Salognon: God-fearing and a with high sense of moral and ethical values. She is demure but with a strong sense of direction.

Mica, as she is fondly called, is the eldest daughter of Michael Benjamin Jardiolin of Benedicto, Jaro and Gemma Fernandez of Oton. She is the granddaughter of the late Engr. Felix “Budol” Jardiolin, a businessman and former Commodore of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Born on January 20, 1996 Mica dreams of being a Certified Public Accountant and an entrepreneur with businesses flourishing in the different continents of the world. As a B.S. Accountancy freshman at the University of San Agustin, she is paving the way for the realization of these dreams.

Our Fiesta Queen is not only a top-notch pupil since her primary grades, she is also a dance enthusiast who has garnered top awards in several dance competitions. Indeed, she she serves as an inspiration to her fellow youth especially to her sibling, ten year old Mary Antoinette.

As the Jaro Fiesta Queen 2013, Mary Therese would like to advocate the promotion of healthy practices and physical well-being. She, in cooperation with the family-owned Milagrosa Shipping Corporation, conducted a medical-dental and feeding community outreach project in November 2012 at the Jaro Gymnasium. She is now preparing for her next civic project, a tree planting activity, together with her Royal Entourage.

To sing this year’s Halad is LOURRA JULLIENNE ARGUELLES PAMA, grandchild of this year’s Hermana Mayor.

She is a Grade 5 pupil at the Assumption School and celebrated her eleventh birthday just recently. She takes ballet lessons and aspires to awe the world with her grace and beauty one day.

Carlo is a 15 year old junior student of St. Joseph School (Iloilo), where he also spent his pre-school and elementary years. A sports enthusiast, Carlo is presently a member of the school Basketball Varsity Team.

Like other teens his age, he likes to surf the net, go to the malls with friends and watch basketball games on TV. He dreams of becoming a successful lawyer someday, just like his uncles.

Carlo was born on December 21, 1997 to Anne S. Ilano. He has a younger sister, Nicolle Angelou S. Ilano.

Hermana Mayor for this year’s Jaro Fiesta is Mrs. Perla Ong Arguelles, active supporter of religious organizations in the parish and the archdiocese.

She candidly shares that her husband, who comes from a “very religious family”, had the greatest influence on her being involved in various undertakings of the Church. A certified public accountant by profession, her financial savvy is put to good use in the Parish Finance Council where she is currently a member.

One could not help but be infected by her enthusiasm as she relates how she balances her seemingly endless involvement in religious and civic organizations, with her family life and businesses. She is a member of the Cofradia de la Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and the Daughters of Mary Immaculate International where she served as International Regent. On the other hand, she is a member of both the Zonta Club of Iloilo City and the Rotary Anns of Iloilo City, and has also been President of both.

Tita Perla, as she is fondly called, is married to Atty. Enrique Golez Arguelles, a businessman and a Papal Awardee in 2010. They have three children: Maria Theresa, Charles Anthony, and Michael. They also have five wonderful grandchildren.

Mrs. Arguelles succeeds Mrs. Imelda Caperonce Florete, last year’s Jaro Fiesta Hermana Mayor.

2005 to Silverio “BJ” Dayata Catedral VII and Jerimee “Jem” Catedral. Sab, as family and friends call her, is the apple of the eyes of her paternal grandparents (Ret.) Col. Ildefonso Segura Catedral and Corazon Dayat Catedral, her maternal grandparents Jerlado Seria Alerta and Imee Iren Posa Alerta, as well as of her great grandmother Norma Guihamas POsa.

Sab started Nursery when she was 4 years and 7 months old. at Kingsway Baptist Academy. She showed exceptional performance and was accelerated to Preparatory School upon transferring to Colegio de San Jose, where she continues to study.

In Prep, she joined the stage play “Cinderella” playing the role of the wicked step mother, where she gave a brilliant performance; to this day, she actively participates in most school activities. She was recently elected President of ‘Little Louise’, a school club, and this motivates her to become a more responsible student, even while developing her leadership skills.

“I love my family and I am so thankful to have them in my life. I know they will always be there for me, guiding me all the way until the time comes when I would be ready to face life and reality on my own. I could not thank them enough for always giving out their 101% support to me. Giving them pride and joy is everything that matters to me.”

An outgoing child with a sunny disposition, she easily melts other people’s hearts as she brings joy and laughter. Her mom describes her as “gorgeous”. She is witty and smart and likes to sing, dance, and act, too. Raised and taught to be respectful and respectable, she is also a God fearing child - it is easy to understand why most people love and adore her.

During his free time he plays PSP, answers Word Search, reading and reads the World Almanac. He also likes to sing and dance, with Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift as his favorite artists.

Bryn is the youngest child of Salvador M. Tabaosares from Don Francisco Village and Nova Minda Catedral from Alta Tierra Village, both nurses, and the 18th grandchild of Rogelio Tabaosares Sr. and Lolita Mongcal, and the 3rd grandchild of (Ret.) Lt. Col. Ildefeonso S. Catedral and Corazon Dayata. His siblings are Brent Hubert and Britny Allyson.

Bryn dreams of becoming a nurse like his parents because he wants to travel abroad and learn different languages. This ten-year old is a sweet, kind hearted, hyper active kid who loves white chocolate and the color blue. Consistently in the top ten of his class, he makes his parents proud of him.
