What is LED?

Delight

LED is a light emitting semiconductor diode that emits light in forward direction or in the direction it is pointed towards.

The color of the light produced by LED depends on the composition of the semiconductor material used out of which producing a blue color light is the most difficult process.

The nature of the light emitted can be visible, infrared or ultraviolet.

LED is an acronym for Light Emitting Diode

Instead of a filament they use a semiconductor diode which emits narrow-spectrum light.

Depending on the composition & condition of the semiconducting material used (Silicone, germanium), they come in either Infrared for sensing heat, Visible for every day use, or Near-Ultraviolet for spotting stains at a crime-scene.

An LED consists of a chip of semiconducting material that has been “doped” with impurities in order to create a p-n junction.

A p-n junction is basically a junction between an anode and a cathode.

Current flows easily from the p-side to the n-side, but never in the reverse order.

The wavelength and color of the LED depends on the band-gap energy of the materials forming the p-n junction.

Power consumption of LED light bulbs

Delight Most modern LED operate in a range of 2 to 24 volts and consume anywhere between

350mA and 1500mA. The power consumption varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and also because of the purpose for which the LED was designed.

Another factor that affects power consumption of LEDs is for the fact that LEDs can not be dimmed.

Now a days using latest of the LED manufacturing technology, manufacturers are able to produce LEDs that are not only super bright but also consume less power while producing light of higher intensity.
