PRIMARY YEAR PROGRAM (PYP)

• THE PYP, OFFERED BY THE IB IS FOR STUDENTS AGED 3–12 YEARS.

• IT EMPHASIS ON INQUIRY BASED LEARNING.

• THE TEACHERS IS A FACILITATOR AND HELPS STUDENTS TO THINK, COMMUNICATE AND TAKE ACTIONS.

• PYP HELPS STUDENTS TO BECOME SELF DIRECTED LEARNERS.

• STUDENTS LEARN TO PROCESS, INTERPRET, EXPLAIN, HYPOTHESIZE AND SHARE INFORMATION.

UNDERSTANDING OF THE PYP MODELINNER MOST CIRCLE

• The student is in the heart of the PYP model displaying that it student centred approach.

• The inner most circle has “Approaches to teaching” represents an important curriculum cycle(written, taught and assessed).

• The essential elements of skills are represented as, “Approaches to learning”(teaching organization, collaboration, communication, thinking and reflection).

• Attitudes and concepts are the most important PYP elements.

THE SECOND CIRCLE OF THE PYP MODEL• This circle demonstrates the clear alignment of the actions with the PYP culminating

activity, “PYP EXHIBITION”. The students demonstrate all that they have learned throughout their journey in the PYP.

• The actions include:

• DIRECT ACTION – PERSON TO PERSON

• INDIRECT – BENEFITING A COMMUNITY

• ADVOCACY FOR ACTION – CREATES AWARENESS

• RESEARCH FOR ACTION- FINDING, GATHERING AND REPORTING INFORMATION.

• A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE ON THE PART OF THE LEARNER – WHICH LEADS TO A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOUR.

THE THIRD CIRCLE OF THE PYP MODEL

• There are six subjects taught in the Primary years programme which are shows the transdisciplinary nature of the PYP.

THE SECOND OUTTER MOST CIRCLE OF THE PYP MODEL

• There are six transdisciplinary themes which are interconnected.

• STUDENTS INQUIRE INTO, AND LEARN ABOUT, THESE GLOBALLY SIGNIFICANT ISSUES IN THE CONTEXT OF UNITS OF INQUIRY,

• EACH OF WHICH ADDRESSES A CENTRAL IDEA RELEVANT TO A PARTICULAR TRANSDISCIPLINARY THEME.

• It demonstrates International Mindedness which means that Students across the world to are guided to become active, compassionate and Lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
