• Both of these maps show where I am currently located and are both correct.

- The issues are when I describe my location as a co-ordinate.

- The issues are when I describe my location as a co-ordinate.- Top left position is 2,4. However, if we use the same co-

ordinate on the bottom right image it gives a different location.

• Everyone would have a standard drawing if there was more context (a datum).

• E.g draw where you are right now relative to Hillhead Subway Station.

• In Hydrographic Surveying there are many different datums and co-ordinate reference systems

• A co-ordinate is meaningless unless it is accompanied by a CRS definition

- This can lead to significant errors in the real world.

Why is this important?

• Around 80% of the data used by Energy Companies is spatially referenced.

• Errors in positioning, poor understanding of spatial relationships or poor data processing / interpretations can be extremely costly and have hugely significant safety and commercial implications. Such as:

• Major HSSE incidents.• Misunderstanding of seabed and subsurface conditions.• Assets constructed in the wrong place.• Loss of revenue.• Loss of asset value.• Delays to schedule.• Loss of reputation.
