¿What is halloween?Halloween is a holiday celebrated mainly in the United States, northern Mexico, and some provinces of Canada on the night of

October 31. It originated in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian

holiday of All Saints' Day. In large part, is a secular celebration but some feel that has a religious background. Irish immigrants passed versions of the tradition to North

America during the Great Irish Famine of 1840.

It was celebrated in Anglo-Saxon countries, mainly in Canada, U.S., Ireland and the UK. Colonizing

Origin of the word Halloween

The word Halloween has its origins in the Catholic Church. Constracción is a prayer in English All Hallows Eve which means "All

Saints Day" and is a Catholic religious festival celebrated on 1 or November 2.

History of halloweenIn the V century BC in Celtic Ireland of the October 31 was celebrated Samhain festival marking the end

of summer and the beginning of a new year. At nightfall, they celebrated the feast of the dead, so the

spirits went out and roamed the earth. To appease them, huge bonfires were made and the druids were

spells. It was said that night and magic spells are more powerful than any other day.

When the Romans conquered the Celts, part of the celebration of the dead went to Christian Rome. In the fourth century AD in Rome, Christianity tried to end all things pagan and ancient religions. But the Celts could not help at all their customs, the Christian church so they changed the name of Samhain to All

Hallow Eve and the reason for this celebration became the Christian worship of all religious martyrs. The seventh-

century Christian church celebrated the feast of All Saints in May, but people still waiting for the arrival of ghosts on

October 31 and the feast of the saints was changed to November1.

THE CUSTOM OF TRICK:The custom of trick or treating began in Europe

with a custom of the ninth century. On November 2, Christians walked from village to

village asking for "soul cakes" which were pieces of bread with "currants." The more you get, the more promising to pray for the dead relatives of the donors, which leads souls to

heaven faster. In the tenth century the church changed the feast of the saints to November 2.

USE OF COSTUMES

People in Europe had masks when droughts or other disasters the

agobiavan. The masks were used to scare away the spirits that brought

them evil. Children dressed as ghosts to scare the neighbors.
