What is Fire?
What we will learn today
• We will learn about the fire triangle and how we can prevent a fire from happening
We have already learned that:
• Fire is not like we see on television
• It is very hot, moves very fast and makes everything very dark
We have also learned that:
• It takes three things to cause a fire:
– Heat - or something that is hot– Fuel - or something that will burn– Oxygen - the air that is all around us
Do we know what a triangle is?
Three sided shape - needs all three sides to
be connected to be a triangle
The same way that the three lines have to be connected to form a triangle, the heat, fuel and oxygen have to be connected to cause a fire.

The blue side is the OXYGEN side.
Fire Triangle
Remove the HEAT sources, and there is nothing hot to start the fire
If we remove any one side of the triangle, the fire cannot happen
Remove the FUEL sources, and there is nothing to burn.
If we remove any one side of the triangle, the fire cannot happen
Remove the OXYGEN and there is nothing to feed the fire.
If we remove any one side of the triangle, the fire cannot happen
Good fires and bad fires
• A good fire is one that is used carefully and under controlled situations
Fire in a grill - good fire or bad fire?
House fire - good fire or bad fire?
Fire in a fireplace - good fire or bad fire?
Forest fire - good fire or bad fire?
