Crisis Commons
Crisis Commons is a grassroots network of technology professionals, domain experts, translators and first responders around the world who are collaborating to improve technology and practice for humanitarian crisis management and disaster relief

How it started…
Crisis Commons was founded in June 2009 in Washington DC by a group of technologists and communications professionals who wanted to use their skills to help prepare for and react to crisis situations – both at home and around the world

Haiti earthquake
In January 2010 the Haiti earthquake provoked a massive volunteer movement – and camps were founded around the world

What does Crisis Camp do?
• Provides people, skills & time to improve existing (technological tools) used in crisis and development scenarios
This supports:
• Organisations who are already in the field (international NGOs, local organisations)
• Organisations who already operate in the space (mapping, telecomms etc)

How organisations request help
• Organisations can request support from Crisis Camp – either generally or from a specific camp
• The request needs to be reviewed, and a crisis camp project manager assigned
• This project manager can be from any camp (project managers are managed centrally)
• The project may then be run by one specific camp, or responsibility for the work may be spread across camps

How volunteers get involved…
• Turn up
• Take on specific responsibilities or just offer skills as they are needed
• Turn up in person or work virtually
• Spread the word amongst their own networks and peers
• Make new friends and colleagues!

Things to Remember• It’s not “us and them” anymore, it’s “us and us”
• You can help - or hinder - from anywhere. Your choice:• Getting the right information to the right people at the right time saves
lives• Overwhelming people with information doesn’t
• Sometimes your tech skills can help people you’ll never meet, immediately and in ways you couldn’t imagine
• Sometimes it takes longer, but it’s no less valuable
