Copyright laws are different today
than they were 75 years ago.
Definition of copyright
The exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, sell, or distribute
the matter and form of something you created.
Who it protectsCopyright protects the intellectual abilities of the author or producer.

The right to use copyrighted material without permission or payment under some circumstances—especially when the cultural or social benefits of the use are predominant.

Fair use is the guidebook we should use in our classrooms .
*Media literacy is the capacity to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a wide variety of forms.
*Media literacy is basically all around us, as we are always inputting information and taking material in.
*Media Literacy is a very important skill to teach to our students.
•Many teachers are afraid that they will get in trouble for copyright laws, when if they just knew the laws, they would realize that what they wanted to do was and is perfectly legal and acceptable.
When we limit the material that we use to teach with, it limits student learning.
We must do whatever we can to reach our students!
Two Key Questions:
Did the unlicensed use “transform” the material taken from the copyrighted work by using it for a different purpose than that of the original, or did it just repeat the work for the same intent and value as the original?
Was the material taken appropriate in kind and amount, considering the nature of the copyrighted work and of the use?
VS
A digital copy is the same as a paper copy,
as far as fair use is concerned.
Functionally, they are the same.
Only use the material that is necessary to convey your purpose. Don’t use the entire
item, if it isn’t necessary.
Key Points about Fair Use
It is situationalContext is criticalIt is not a defense…it is a right. Don’t let administrators pressure
you into doing something that you know is illegal.
Have a copy of the schools fair use policy on hand to use as a reference.
•Bodies of work are available to the public for free use and legal sharing
•CC gives people a standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work.
•CC allows you to keep your copyright while allowing certain uses of your work.
Defintion
•Creative Commons puts the control in the hands of the creator to decide what they want to be done with their work.
•It gives creators a choice about copyright.
Copyright Laws are something we cannot take
lightly. We as teachers must be
informed to become more effective teachers.
Take these helpful hints and implement them into your
classroom to better reach your students.
