What is Co-op Education?

A program which alternates periods of academic study with periods of work experience in accordance with the following criteria:

• each work situation is developed and/or approved by the co-op department as a suitable learning situation

• the co-op student is engaged in productive work

• the co-op student receives remuneration

• the co-op student's progress on the job is monitored by the co-op program staff

• the co-op student's performance on the job is supervised and evaluated by the student's co-op employer

What Does Co-op Look Like?

• Alternating– 1 four month and 8 month

work terms alternating between academic study.

• Internship – 12 months of continuous

employment with one employer. Start date in May, September or January.

Earn

• Students in the program typically earn between $12-24 an hour on co-op.

• Typically work a minimum 35 hrs/wk.

• With the proper budgeting co-op work terms can help offset other education expenses.

• Complete Co-op 405 and earn 3 credits towards your degree.

• Co-op 110, 120 and 130 can help you land your dream job and help you to become an effective employee.

• Gain an understanding of today’s workplace and the options available.

• Learn about your skills, abilities, knowledge, and work preferences.

• Polish your communication, teamwork, problem solving, and conflict management skills.

• Corporate/ Private Sector Industry

• Continuing Care Facilities or Hospitals

• Provincial and Federal Government

• Entrepreneurial Work Experience

Co-op Staff work with students to develop a co-op plan that can include local, national and some international placements.

Program Overview

1. Apply for the program

2. Register and complete Co-op sessions

3. Apply and secure co-op positions

4. After completing work term requirements, return to classes and complete COOP 405.

5. Students graduate with an enhanced degree program
