What is Cascarones?
iCascarones!
• Cascarones are eggshells that have been emptied and cleaned out. They are then dyed bright colors, filled with confetti and sealed with a glued on piece of tissue paper.
iHistory!• It is believed cascarones can be traced to China, where
eggs were filled with perfumed powder and given as gifts.
• They might have been brought to Spain by Marco Polo, who introduced them to Carlotta, the wife of Emperor Maximillian.
• When the Emperor's wife moved to Mexico, she brought them with her because she was fascinated with them. There, they were named cascarones after the Spanish word for shell "cascara."
• The egg represents the empty tomb of Christ on Easter morning, and the bright-colored paper is the joy of Jesus' Resurrection.
