t is becoming clear that there is a science to beauty. Extensive

research has shown that we have similar ideas about what constitutes a beautiful face. When British researchers asked

women to rate pictures of various men, their choices were identical. When a group including English, Chinese, and Indians were asked to choose a “good looking” face from a selection of racially diverse faces, individuals from 13 countries shared the same choices. In other words, regardless of ethnicity, age, or culture, people share a universal sense of what is attractive. Furthermore, evolutionary psychologists have concluded that humans share an innate attraction to beautiful people—even 3 to 6 month-old infants will gaze longer at an attractive face compared to an unattractive one!

Therefore, the aesthetic specialist must observe and study what is important to achieve natural-appearing but outstanding results. So what is the preferred facial volume and shape to achieve beauty?

The answer may lie with the speed by which we process attractiveness, as we decide whether someone is attractive almost instantaneously. Our brains are functioning as supercomputers, calculating “beauty” in split seconds; according to Malcolm Gladwell, “we look with our eyes but see with our brains.”

Guided by the Golden Ratio = “1.62”

The ancient Greeks, following the convictions of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates, maintained that all beauty resides in mathematics. Across centuries,

many of the world’s greatest intellects, amongst them Galileo, Michelangelo, Einstein, and Leonardo da Vinci, were awed by the fact that natural beauty appears dependent on this “divine proportion” known as the Golden Ratio or Phi, = “1.62”. This Golden Ratio or Phi

guided Renaissance artists and architects in creating masterworks such as the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Parthenon, and the Taj Mahal; a concept that continues to be applied to post modern art and architecture.

The immediate perception of beauty may be hard-wired into our brains based on how closely one’s features reflect the Phi ratio. Indeed, golden proportions are found over the entire beautiful face: the ideal facial width, the beautiful brow, the cheek high point, and well-proportioned lips. This may explain why, regardless of who we are and who we are looking at, we share similar, instantaneous perceptions of who is beautiful!

The Phi ratio defines the beautiful faces of Angelina Jolie (left) and Tom Cruise (right).

Small Differences in Anatomy Make Big Differences in Appearance

Contrary to common requests for immediate one-treatment line filling and wrinkle chasing, age-appropriate beauty is created through a comprehensive, step-wise global approach based on volume restoration, optimizing skin health, and dialling into the Golden Ratio.

Having treated thousands of cosmetic patients during her decade at Skinworks, Dr. Jang has come to realize that small differences in facial anatomy make for significant gains in attractiveness. In reality, this usually means a combination of neurotoxins, fillers and laser/skincare, performed as a series of aptly named combination treatments over months and eventually years, culminating in a graceful, aging face. This evolution or roadmap is essential for achieving natural results as the face matures, and can only occur when the

aesthetic physician possesses the requisite technical skills, as well as the critical “Phi eye”!

With over 25 years experience, Dr. Jang is comfortable treating faces beginning in their 20s or 30s, when treatment can be largely preventative, as well as more complex cases when treating those in their 50s and beyond. Her favourite age group to work with are patients in their 40s.

“A minimum of combination therapy for this age group can result in a significantly fresher, less-tired appearance but perhaps more importantly, treatment at this stage can be preventative!” - Dr. Jang

Many patients however see Dr. Jang for their first treatment in their 50s, and while this can be somewhat more challenging, as you can see from the photos below, it can also yield spectacular results.
