What is an Osprey?

An osprey (also known as “sea hawk”) is one of the most common and well-known birds of prey in the world. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. An osprey’s outer toe is reversible, which means they can carry prey with two toes in front and two toes behind! The oldest known North American Osprey lived to be 25 years old.

What do ospreys eat?

Ospreys eat a diet of mainly fish. This earned them the nickname “sea hawk.” Ospreys hunt fish by hovering over water and then diving feet first to capture prey in their powerful talons. Only sometimes, when fish aren't available, osprey eat small mammals, birds, or reptiles.

Breeding?

Breeding pairs make a large nest on the ground usually made out of sticks, seaweed and other debris. Females can lay two to four eggs. They breed on all continents except Antarctica and South America.

Can ospreys swim?

Ospreys can swim but not very often. To see an osprey swim is very rare.

How big can ospreys grow?

Ospreys can grow to be more than 60cm in length! Their wingspan can grow to be 180cm!
