A thesis statement summarizes what your essay is about.

It serves as a guide for the reader, so he/she knows what to expect in your essay.

Your thesis statement includes all the points to be made in the paper, in your three body paragraphs.

In a persuasive essay, your thesis is also your main argument.

Why do we need one?

Page 3: What is a Thesis Statement?

Start by summarizing your major argument/points of the essay.

Your thesis will have 3 “prongs”– your three body paragraph topics.

Your prongs should be listed in order, so the reader knows what to expect and where in your essay to find it.

It should be a logical progression of ideas. Your thesis is the last sentence in your introductory

paragraph. The thesis should be one/two sentences at most

(shoot for one- even if it is a long sentences).

How do I write one?

Page 4: What is a Thesis Statement?

Do NOT use “I” in your thesis, or ANYWHERE in your paper. The reader already knows you are writing the paper and these

are your thoughts and opinions. Your name is on the paper after all!

NONE OF THIS: In this paper, I will explain ... The following paragraphs will describe ... This essay will explain ...

Never use “you” either. You aren’t addressing the reader personally (sometimes it is ok if asking a rhetorical question. Ask a teacher if you are unsure).

You thesis is NOT a fact, statement, or command. It is an analysis, argument, or combination of ideas about a subject.

What should I not do?
