What is a Synagogue and Rabbi?
Mackenzie Burt
Mrs. Willis’s 5th period class
What Synagogue means
Synagogue in Greek means a place for coming together, or a meeting place, and that is what a synagogue is. It is a building where Jews come together and pray to their God. In this way it is a lot like a church is to a Christian.
What Rabbi means
In 70 AD, when the Roman general Titus destroyed the temple in Jerusalem, the Jews stopped offering sacrifices to their god, and stopped having priests. Instead, rabbis, or teachers, became their religious leaders, at least until the temple was rebuilt. During the time of the Roman Empire, one became a rabbi by studying the Torah (the Bible) and then getting smicha (being ordained) by the council of the Sanhedrin, who were in charge of Jewish religious business.
