1. Once the storm has cleared, construction machinery and PierContainers are brought i n to help clear debris from m ajorroadways.

3. deployment
DEPLOYMENTS.C.A.F.FOLD was designed to be quickly deployable using industry standard shipping container s izes and hydraulics to m inimizemanual labor. During the recovery process, roadways are always the first t hing t o be c leared o f debris. This fact enablesS.C.A.F.FOLD to deploy faster than any other housing system anderect sooner since it does not need cleared land to set up.
Once streets have been cleared of debris S.C.A.F.FOLD is hauled to the site 1
Base units are secured. Chassis begins to elevate and slide open. 4
S.C.A.F.FOLD is detached from the truck and maneuvered to the site by using gyroscopic wheels located on each of the legs.With 360 degree motion the electrically powered wheels are able to navigate without heavy machinery and can be operated by a single individual.

Units are hinged along the Chassis and use hydraulics to rotate 90 degrees and attach to an adjacent Chassis. 3

The typical unit is designed for a singleindividual o r a couple within anefficient 178.5 sq.ft. spaced to set up.+ The s tandard s ized double bed i selevated 4 ’ from t he floor i n order t oprovide storage underneath.+ The bathroom doors are used asstorage and room dividers. When closed,the doors separate the bathroom f romthe rest of the unit. When open the doorsbecome walls which give privacy from thesleeping quarters and the kitchen+ The s ink services both the bathroomand k itchen, saving space and cost. Byusing s liding panels the sink can beaccessed from either side while providingprivacy from the adjacent space.+ The s tove and f ridge are ‘floating’elements that are included in the unit butcan be arranged once the unit is unfolded.+ The living quarters provide sufficientspace f or a s mall living room. Units aresupplied with a f old out couch f oradditional sleeping quarters.+ Dining is accommodated v ia a fold outtable, which doubles as a work station

TABLE:The elevated surface created by the S.C.A.F.FOLD system, known as the ‘Table’, provides public access and communal spaces above city streets. The surface is created using a panel system similar to the ones developed to clad the units. The panels are structurally rigid, providing the support needed to span between Chassis. Their design also provides the lateral stability between adjacent Chassis structures. With interchangeable panels, the S.C.A.F.FOLD system can be modified to correspond to existing site conditions, such as trees or buildings that may project into the street or sidewalk.
Grate Panel: Used for public thoroughfare. Grating prevents rain and snow accumulationon the elevated walking surface. Grating also provides a ‘non-slip’ surface above thestreet.
Green Panel: Used to produce recreational areas for local residents. The porous surface helps reduce the amount of run off sent to sewers. Green spaces alleviate pressures on a storm water system that may be damaged from the disaster and consequently, unable to handle additional capacity.
Exhaust Panels: Used to evacuate fumes and toxins which may accumulate from theroadway below. The Panels use a fan and act as a chimney to draw pollutants away fromthe roadway and expel them away from S.C.A.F.FOLD residents. These panels are strategi-cally located in areas where fumes can not dissipate naturally.

Housing Calculations:
BLOCK PLAN + SECTION:
SITE SELECTION:The first area cleared in any disaster is the major transpor-tation arteries. The S .C.A.F.FOLD system capitalizes on thissituation by building provisional housing in the first available space - the streets.
+ Building over the street expedites the return of residentssince roadways are cleared first.+ By building over the roadway, adjacent sites slated for newconstruction remain free. This enables s ites to beginconstruction more quickly since residents do not have to bedisplaced in order to gain access to the site.+ Utilities are generally l ocated under roadways. W ith itsproximity to the road, the S .C.A.F.FOLD system i s able toengage existing infrastructure if needed.+ With residents living over and beside the street, they have immediate access to shuttle buses, subways and publictransportation.+ Residents are able to remain within the proximity of theiroriginal neighborhoods i nstead of congregating i nprovisional housing camps.
8. deconstruction
DECONSTRUCTIONThe success of the S.C.A.F.FOLD system is in its expeditiousdeployment a s well a s its s trategic deconstruction a ndre-use. S.C.A.F.FOLD can easily be scaled up or down as thedemand d ictates. The i ndividual units a ll the system to bedecommissioned sequentially as permanent housing comesonline.
Decommissioned units are sent back to ships to be stored forredeployment
Some decommissioned units are purchased by local businessto house small commercial operations on the pier.
Units are evaluated and d amaged p anels are removed.Frames are retrofitted with new in lines with the needs of thenext mission.
Tables o n southern shore lines c an be kept a nd developedinto an elevated linear park. Areas enable pedestrian access between piers and provide a spectacular vantage point of thewater.

Through the use of existing technologies, S .C.A.F.FOLD is able tocreate portable and adaptable provisional housing that is quicklyand efficiently deployed in the aftermath of any natural disaster.The effectiveness of this system is due to three main characteris-tics:
SPEED: Standard ISO container sizing is used to efficiently deployunits. Using the latest technology, housing is deployed faster sinceassembly requires limited labor and site preparation. This enablesthe system to be used after ANY natural disaster in ANY location.
ADAPTABILITY: The i ndependently adjustable legs o f the chassisenable the units to be elevated above the ground and enable thestructure to conforming to uneven terrain or land that may still beflooded. Housing units are comprised of interchangeable cladding panels which enable customization of components and the abilityto retro-fit the frames to meet the needs of redeployment. Panelcomponents enable multiple configurations of units which ensurethe housing can accommodate a wide variety of family types andprograms comfortably.
SUSTAINABILITY: Units are designed to be self-contained and canoperate independent of city utilities and provide tools to minimize their impact on the environment.
Sustainability i ncludes t he ability to re-use t he provisionalhousing t hrough redeployment. The s turdy construction andability to re-tool the units enables them to be re-deployed w ithupdated technology when the need occurs.
FO[RE] PRINCIPLES OF RECOVERY:
Re-Move: Debris left f rom t he a ftermath is collected andhermetically sealed within specialized shipping containers. Thesecontainers are then deposited within the adjacent body of water tocreate a loading pier, which is used to receive arriving cargo.
Re-Habitat: Return residents to t heir neighborhoods to re-establish communities + businesses.
Re-Tool: As permanent housing i s constructed, S .C.A.F.FOLDunits can be decommissioned and re-used. By using a panelizedcladding system, damaged components can b e removed andupgraded to meet the requirements of the next mission.
Re-Distribute: The E mergency Events Database [EM-DAT] hasshown a steady increase in natural disasters over the last 20-30 years and recorded over 400 natural disasters worldwide in 2007alone . W ith a w idespread demand f or provisional housing, t heability to quickly redistribute emergency resources is essential. Inaddition, t he universality o f the S.C.A.F.FOLD system a llows itscosts and benefits to be distributed on a global scale
