What have I learned creating My College Magazine

Thoughts behind the design of my College Magazine

When deciding on the layout of magazine I took inspiration from research online by looking at other magazines and they all follow a typical layout of a masthead at the top, a main image on the cover and sub lines displayed around the edges, so I decided to the same as it makes it look more professional and well thought out.The colours in which I chose to use were mainly red and white as they stood out well from the image in the background and contrasted eachother well, allowing the masthead and sell lines to stand out, another reason is that they are the colours of the Sunderland football strip so they represent sunderland college well.

Using my blogWhilst doing my college magazine I have uploaded each step onto my blog, this has allowed me to understand how to use it and upload posts that contain different things such as text and images. As this is my first time using a blog doing this preliminary task has enabled me to gain experience using a blog, making it easier for me when I do my coursework and music magazine. I’ve also learned

My AudienceAs my magazine is written about college I would say the primary audience would be college students aged 16-18, both male and female as they may want to find out what else is going on around the college and what’s new. The secondary audience therefore would may be parents of the students , aged 30+, wanting to learn more about where their child is attending, and Year 11 students, again both male and female, who are looking at college options and deciding where they want to go in September. The main audience code would be class D. My magazine provides information and articles that will appeal to both audiences, current students may want to read about the new buildings and facilities, parents may have an interest in reading about the previous years results and finally year 11 students may want to read the whole magazine but will focus on learning about enrichment and the information about enrollment and courses.

Editing my images

On this photo that was used as my main image on the cover of my magazine I added a blue colour overlay on photoshop, this allowed the masthead and sublines to stand out well. I also edited another image for the contents page by changing the transparency to make it more subtle, again on photoshop. Editing these images has allowed me to gain skills using photo shop which will make it easier again when making my actual music magazine as I already have some practice of editing images.

What skills I have learned Whilst doing this preliminary task and creating a college magazine I have gained some helpful and good skills that will make it a lot easier when making my music magazine, such as knowing how to upload posts to my blog, both text and image which will come in handy as I have to upload all of my coursework and my stages of making the magazine, how to use photoshop to edit images and to create a page such as a cover or contents, and also what magazines need to look like and what is expected of one. I will use these all of these skills when creating my actual music magazine, I will use my skills in photoshop to edit all of my images and to put my magazine together and this will now be easiler for me as I have had practice and experience in doing it, I know how to to upload posts to my blog which I do for every piece of coursework I do throughout the year, and by finding out what a good magazine looks like , I now know how to plan the layout and look of my magazine to make it look professional.
