THERE ISN’T ANYTHING WRONG WITH “STUFF.”
The problem is that we often misuse money to get “stuff.”

MoneyFederal Reserve (June 7, 2002)
Consumer credit card debt stands at $1.6 trillion.
Consumer debt including mortgages stands at $7 trillion; that‟s double what it was in 1990.
Twenty-three percent of the average take-home pay is already committed to paying on debt.
Fifty-six percent of all divorces are a result of money problems.

Scripture.

about money.

Money
NUMBER ONE: IT’S NOT YOURS.
Godand
Money$ We often hear that God owns the cattle on a
thousand hills.
Godand
Money$ We often hear that God owns the cattle on a
thousand hills.$ He does: “Every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle
on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine” (Ps 50:10-11, ESV).

on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine” (Ps 50:10-11, ESV).
$ BUT, God owns those hills & everything else!
Godand
Money$ God owns everything, for it is he who made
everything.
Godand
Money$ God owns everything, for it is he who made
everything.$ “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the
earth” (Gn 1:1, ESV).
Godand

earth” (Gn 1:1, ESV).
$ “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was with God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made” (Jn 1:1-3, ESV).
Godand
Money$ God owns everything, for it is he who made
everything.$ Whatever anyone makes, he/she owns.
Godand

Money
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN PRACTICALLY?
Godand
Money$ We need to be thankful for what we have.
Godand
Money$ We need to be thankful for what we have.
$ God gives me everything I have.
Godand

$ “He makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Mt 5:45, ESV).
$ Therefore, I need to give thanks. “„I urge you to take some food. It will give you strength, for not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.‟ And when he had said these things, he took bred, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all he broke it and began to eat” (Acts 27:34-35, ESV).

Money
DO WE OFFER THANKS FOR WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN US?
Godand
Money$ We are simply stewards of the things that we
have.

else‟s account.

also.

NUMBER TWO: THIS LIFE IS ACT I IN A THREE-ACT PLAY.
Godand
Money$ This life is going to be followed by Judgment (Act
II) & Eternity (Act III).
Godand
Money$ This life is going to be followed by Judgment (Act
II) & Eternity (Act III).$ God, as the author of this play, doesn‟t feel any
obligation to work everything out in the first act.
Godand
Money$ This life is going to be followed by Judgment (Act
II) & Eternity (Act III).$ God, as the author of this play, doesn‟t feel any
obligation to work everything out in the first act.$ Only when we grasp that life is not about money &
things can we truly understand what Scripture says about money!

II) & Eternity (Act III).$ God, as the author of this play, doesn‟t feel any
obligation to work everything out in the first act.$ Only when we grasp that life is not about money &
things can we truly understand what Scripture says about money!
$ The Bible teaches that the things of this world are not nearly as important as the things of the next world.
Godand
Money$ “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Mt 6:19-21, ESV).
Godand
Money$ Mt 6:19-21.$ “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father‟s good
pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys” (Lk 12:32-33, ESV).
Godand
Money$ The reason that Jesus instructs us on the proper
use of money is that we are going to live forever.
Godand
Money$ The reason that Jesus instructs us on the proper
use of money is that we are going to live forever.$ “Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or
father or mother or children or lands, for my name‟s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life” (Mt 19:29, ESV).
Godand
Money• Give 10% of your
income to good works (of course, most of it is to go to Robertson!) & God will reward you richly!
Godand
Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.
Godand
Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.
$ God will richly reward us.
Godand
Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.
$ God will richly reward us.
$ “Whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Cor 9:6, ESV).
Godand
Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.$ But, he was grossly wrong to say God will reward
us in this life.
Godand
Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.$ But, he was grossly wrong to say God will reward
us in this life.$ If God rewards us in this life, why did he say what he
did about the poor widow who put into the treasury all she had to live on?

Money$ Robertson had some things exactly right.$ But, he was grossly wrong to say God will reward
us in this life.$ If God rewards us in this life, why did he say what he
did about the poor widow who put into the treasury all she had to live on?
$ Why didn‟t he say to the disciples, “Guys, that lady just put in all she had. What she doesn‟t know is that when she gets home Ed McMahon is going to be standing there with a Publisher‟s Clearing House check”?
Godand
Money$ People often want to know why life isn‟t fair.
Godand
Money$ People often want to know why life isn‟t fair.
$ When my boys have complained about fairness, I‟ve often said, “Life isn‟t fair!”
Godand
Money$ People often want to know why life isn‟t fair.
$ When my boys have complained about fairness, I‟ve often said, “Life isn‟t fair!”
$ But, I‟ve come to believe that statement is false: Life IS fair!
Godand
Money$ God makes life fair, for he richly rewards!
Godand
Money$ God makes life fair, for he richly rewards!
$ Think about the rich man & Lazarus.
Godand
Money$ God makes life fair, for he richly rewards!
$ Think about the rich man & Lazarus.
$ Jesus told of these two men in response to the Pharisees.
$ “The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these
things, and they ridiculed him” (Lk 16:14, ESV).

$ Jesus told of these two men in response to the Pharisees.
$ “The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these
things, and they ridiculed him” (Lk 16:14, ESV).
$ Jesus begins a sermon & the illustration of the rich man
and Lazarus provides the conclusion.
Godand
Money$ God makes life fair, for he richly rewards!
$ Think about the rich man & Lazarus.
$ The rich man had everything, while Lazarus had nothing.
Godand
Money$ God makes life fair, for he richly rewards!
$ Think about the rich man & Lazarus.
$ The rich man had everything, while Lazarus had nothing: “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man‟s table” (Lk 16:19-21, ESV).

And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man‟s table” (Lk 16:19-21, ESV).
$ Can you imagine how unfair that life is?

$ Can you imagine how unfair that life is?
$ BUT, when this life is over, we see fairness: God rewarded
Lazarus, while he punished the rich man.
Godand
Money$ Jesus spoke of that reward in Mt 19:29.
Godand
Money$ Jesus spoke of that reward in Mt 19:29. Those
who give up everything to be his disciples will receive a hundredfold & eternal life.
Godand

Money$ Jesus spoke of that reward in Mt 19:29. Those
who give up everything to be his disciples will receive a hundredfold & eternal life.
$ Life is more than this existence in the flesh.$ How we use the money God has entrusted to us
could very well determine where we spend eternity.
Godand
Money
NUMBER THREE: MONEY IS MORE THAN PAPER.
Godand
Money$ Money is not neutral; it is a force.
Godand
Money$ Money is not neutral; it is a force. It either
controls us, or we control it!
Godand
Money$ Money is not neutral; it is a force. It either
controls us, or we control it!$ If we allow it, money will become THE driving
force in our lives.
Godand
Money$ Money is not neutral; it is a force. It either
controls us, or we control it!$ If we allow it, money will become THE driving
force in our lives.$ “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate
the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money” (Mt 6:24, ESV).

force in our lives.$ “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate
the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money” (Mt 6:24, ESV).
$ Money can become a quite negative force in our lives & bring us to much heartache.

$ Money can become a quite negative force in our lives & bring us to much heartache.
$ We need to determine how we will control money, or it will control us!
Godand
Money
NUMBER FOUR: MONEY CANNOT BUY HAPPINESS.
Godand
Money$ We have probably believed the lie that money
brings happiness more than any other lie about money.
Godand
Money$ We have probably believed the lie that money
brings happiness more than any other lie about money.$ Jesus tells us otherwise: “Take care, and be on your
guard against all covetousness, for one‟s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Lk 12:15, ESV).
Godand
Money$ We have probably believed the lie that money
brings happiness more than any other lie about money.$ Jesus tells us otherwise: “Take care, and be on your
guard against all covetousness, for one‟s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Lk 12:15, ESV).
$ But, so many have ignored Jesus‟ words & tried to find happiness in money.
Godand
Money• “I think everybody
should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it‟s not the answer.”
Godand
Money$ Solomon tried to find happiness through money,
but he failed.
Godand
Money$ Solomon: “Whatever my eyes desired I did not
keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun” (Eccl 2:10-11, ESV).
Godand
Money$ Solomon.$ The rich fool in Luke 12 also tried.
Godand
Money$ Solomon.$ The rich fool in Luke 12 also tried.
$ When he saw the abundance of his crops, he said, “I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink be merry” (Lk 12:18-19, ESV).
Godand
Money$ Solomon.$ The rich fool in Luke 12 also tried.

$ He had happiness!
Godand
Money$ Solomon.$ The rich fool in Luke 12 also tried.

$ He had happiness! BUT GOD SAYS, “„Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?‟” (Lk 12:20, ESV).
Godand
Money$ “Money will buy a bed but not sleep; books but
not brains; food but not appetite; finery but not beauty; a house but not a home; medicine but not health; luxuries but not culture; amusements but not happiness; religion but not salvation; a passport to everywhere but heaven.”
Godand
Money$ “Money will buy a bed but not sleep; books but
not brains; food but not appetite; finery but not beauty; a house but not a home; medicine but not health; luxuries but not culture; amusements but not happiness; religion but not salvation; a passport to everywhere but heaven.”
$ The key is contentment.
Godand
Money$ Contentment is a spiritual issue.
Godand
Money$ Contentment is a spiritual issue.
$ “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:12-13, ESV).
Godand

$ “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:12-13, ESV).
$ Have we learned contentment through the Lord Jesus who gives us strength?

NUMBER FIVE: THERE IS ENOUGH MONEY TO MAKE THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE.
Godand
Money$ There is a great deal of suffering in this world.
Godand
Money$ There is a great deal of suffering in this world.
$ We often wonder how God could allow these things go on.
Godand

Godand

$ $70-$80 billion would meet basic human needs around the
world.
Godand
Money$ There is a great deal of suffering in this world.
$ We often wonder how God could allow these things go on.
$ God has provided the means to eradicating suffering from the world.
$ “That figure of $70-$80 billion may sound like anything
but good news. God may be generous, you may agree, but
has he been that generous? Consider this: If church
members in the United States would increase their giving
to 10 percent of their income, there could be an additional
$94 billion available for overseas missions.”
Godand
Money$ You may be thinking, “Now, wait just a minute,
Justin. The tithe is an OT principle that is no longer applicable today, and not every so called Christian is a true Christian.”
Godand
Money$ You may be thinking, “Now, wait just a minute,
Justin. The tithe is an OT principle that is no longer applicable today, and not every so called Christian is a true Christian.”$ Both of those objections are valid & true.
Godand
Money$ You may be thinking, “Now, wait just a minute,
Justin. The tithe is an OT principle that is no longer applicable today, and not every so called Christian is a true Christian.”$ The NT does not teach tithing.
Godand

reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful
giver” (2 Cor 9:7, ESV).

$ “Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful
giver” (2 Cor 9:7, ESV).
$ On the other hand, if Jews in the OT—who did not have all
the blessings in Christ that we have—were required to give
10%, isn‟t that at least a good starting point?
Godand
Money$ Not everyone who claims Christianity is a true
Christian.
Godand
Money$ Not everyone who claims Christianity is a true
Christian. BUT:
Godand
Money$ Not everyone who claims Christianity is a true
Christian. BUT:$ I‟m confident that if true Christians gave 10% of their
income, the church could do much, much more good.
Godand
Money$ Not everyone who claims Christianity is a true
Christian. BUT:$ I‟m confident that if true Christians gave 10% of their
income, the church could do much, much more good.
$ We need to do more than just talking about people not being faithful to Jesus, but we need to be working toward bringing souls to Jesus.
Godand
Money
LET US COMMIT OURSELVES TO GIVING GENEROUSLY THAT GOD’S WORK MAY PROSPER!
Godand
Money$ “I do not mean that others should be eased and
you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, „Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack‟” (2 Cor 8:13-15, ESV).
