TOP 10 GROWTH OCCUPATIONS A recent study has listed the top 10 occupations with the largest projected growth rates over the next 5 years. Carers and Aides came in at number one on the list - that’s good news for future carers! Why care? No matter their age or ability, all people deserve to live a happy and fulfilling life. We have a better understanding than ever before about the importance of the dignity and independence of all Australians, the advantages of keeping people safe in their own homes or happy in care facilities, and the importance of maintaining family and community connections. Carers help people with in their daily lives with their daily activities. They participate each day in a diverse range of activities • Assist with dressing and personal hygiene • Assist with mobility • Help with housekeeping and meal preparation • Do the shopping and run errands • Organise social outings and activities • Provide friendship and emotional support So if you’re thinking about being a carer check out some of the skills you will need. • Empathy, patience and flexibility • Good communication skills • The ability to work as a part of a team • A willingness to learn the stories of people of all ages and from all walks of life It’s not out of reach! If you enjoy the company of other people, you think you have the right aptitude and you want to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, you can enter the caring industry after completing Year 10. BUT your employment prospects are far better with work experience, volunteering experience and a willingness to work towards an appropriate qualification. Explore VET and Volunteering! Jobs in personal care usually require Certificate II, Certificate III or Diploma level. Some care providers also offer traineeships, so it’s worth exploring all of those options.
