What is a Prophet?What is a Prophet?
A Prophet is someone who brings the message of God to people. They challenge the status quo of the community whenthat status quo is not authentic and life giving. They reveal the truth when the truth is hidden.
We need Prophets today. God sendsus Prophets to remind us of the truth.They remind us to act justly and to loveour neighbour
They remind us that there is something more than materialism and individualism.
Prophets reveal God in our midst. They touch our hearts and our imaginations.
Prophets have a deep relationship with God. Their work is a response to this relationship.
Prophets are individuals who reachout in justice. Inspired by God they face injustice and take up their call to respond to the Spirit, as Jesus did.
Can you think of anyone, now or in the past that may have been recognisedas a prophet?
Here are a few people that arerecognised as prophets
Mother TeresaShe helped the poor, homeless, diseased and dying people
Fred HollowsHe helped to restore the eyesight of countless thousands of people in developing countries and to improve indigenous health here in Australia.
Martin Luther King JrHe worked for racial equality and civil rights in the United States of America
He spoke passionately and publicly of the need for Christians to work for justice.Many opposed his ideas, so he was always in danger. One day, during mass, he was shot and killed because of his courageous stand for justice.
