Listening WalkWe’re going to take a walk outside! This is going to be a special walk, a listening walk. I want you to keep your lips zipped and listen to all of the sounds you hear on our walk. What did you hear on our walk? Did you like the sounds you heard? What was a sound you didn’t like? Why did you like or dislike some sounds?

Texture BoxThere is a texture box on your table! One at a time you will pick out an item, think about what it feels like to touch it. What do your hands and fingers tell you about this item? Is it soft? Is it rough? Is it slimy? Is it bumpy? Can you think of two words to tell about it? If you switch with your neighbor, do you think the new item feels the same or different? Each of these are different textures, so each will feel different to your hands and fingers!

We taste with our mouth

Page 15: What do you know about the five senses?

What can you taste? In our mouth, our tongue has taste buds that

help us to taste things! We can taste things that are sweet, salty,

bitter, and sour!I can taste a sweet…I can taste a salty…I can taste a bitter…I can taste a sour…

Page 16: What do you know about the five senses?

Taste TestWe’re going to taste something from sweet, salty, bitter, and sour taste sensors. I want you to put what we taste on the tip, or sides of your tongue. This is where you taste the most! We’re going to taste one at a time! Which one do you think is the sweet taste? Which is salty? Which is bitter? Which is sour? Do you like one taste group better than another?

We smell with our noses

Page 18: What do you know about the five senses?

What can you smell?

We can smell things like tasty food, stinky socks, or dangerous smoke… Smell tells us about our environment.

In the park I can smell...At McDonalds I can smell…When I close my eyes I can smell…I like to smell…I don’t like to smell…

Page 19: What do you know about the five senses?

It smells like…You have four different smelly dots in front of you, we are going to try and guess what they are! Use your hand to “waft” the smell. Picture your hand like a fan swooshing the smell to your nose! Imagine that you are on the phone trying to tell your Mom what you smell, but you don’t know what it is! Describe the mystery smell! You can compare it to smells that you already know, or use other describing words. Can you describe what the first one smells like without naming what you think it is? Does anyone know what this is? Can you describe the second, and name it? How about the third one, what does that smell like? Last one, can you describe that smell?
