Being a part

of Figure Skating

in Harlem was

a blessing.

“ At the tender age of seven, I didn’t realize

exactly what this program offered me. Now

at the age of seventeen I clearly see its vision.

I was granted a sisterhood that couldn’t be

found anywhere else. I was granted a safe

space to make mistakes and find out who

I am. I was granted the opportunity to blossom

into a fearless, independent, and intelligent

young woman. I’m proud to say that I will be

attending Howard University with a full tuition

scholarship this fall.

To my young Harlem and Detroit sisters: you,

too, will make this world a better place with

the skills you will learn at FSH. You each have

something remarkable about yourselves that

might not be revealed just yet. But trust me,

it’s there, forming and growing stronger each

day. You are in the early stages of becoming a

diamond. Being carved and cut, so that you are

ready to shine to the world like all of us at FSH

who have come before you.”

— TANAY DAVIS, FSH SENIOR

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS!

OUR MISSION IS TO HELP GIRLS TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES AND

GROW IN CONFIDENCE, LEADERSHIP AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT.

FIGURE SKATING IN HARLEM IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION FOR

GIRLS OF COLOR THAT COMBINES THE POWER OF EDUCATION

WITH ACCESS TO THE ARTISTIC DISCIPLINE OF FIGURE SKATING

TO BUILD CHAMPIONS IN LIFE.

Twenty years ago, Figure Skating in Harlem was founded

on the core belief that combining the grace and discipline

of figure skating, rigorous academics, and leadership

development unlocks the potential inside each and

every young girl. This is truer today than ever before

as one by one our students build a foundation on ice

that extends throughout their lives.

SHERRIE SMITHI was honored to be in the first class of Figure Skating

in Harlem 20 years ago! After the program, I went on to

Northeastern University earning a bachelor’s degree in

Business Administration, double majoring in Accounting

and Finance, in 2010. After graduating, I received a full-time

oer to Goldman Sachs where I am currently a Senior

Associate within the Finance Division. I currently sit on the

advisory board for Figure Skating in Harlem and am ecstatic

to see the progress it has made over the years.

SCARLETT JIMENEZ My name is Scarlett Jimenez and I joined Figure Skating in

Harlem in 2004 at the age of 11. I stayed with the program

throughout high school, graduating in 2011. I attended

Lafayette College and graduated with a B.A in Engineering

Studies. I currently work as an Assistant Project Manager

for Hunter Roberts Construction Group and am one of

three team members overseeing the mechanical trades for

a 64-story residential tower. FSH has taught me that if we

work hard enough and with the right support we can land

that jump, or for me today, that overseeing $20 million

dollars’ worth of work is possible. My journey with FSH was

one in a million, and has forever shaped and strengthened

the person that I am today.

MEILING JABBAARI was a participant of Figure Skating in Harlem for 10 years!

Happy to announce that two years ago I graduated from

Brown University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in

Public Policy. I currently work at an education organization

called Practice Makes Perfect as a Recruitment Coordinator.

I am incredibly grateful for my experience at FSH because I

wouldn’t be where I am today without it!

As a result, we’ve created a community of committed, resilient, focused, confident and caring young

women who are making a dierence in the world around them. In 2017, our model now extends

beyond New York City to deserving young girls in Detroit, a city in transformation. Your support is

the spark upon which each student begins their unique journey of growth and achievement.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Sharon Cohen Ellen Lowey

perfect opportunity for the city!”

— Meryl Davis, Olympic Champion

Figure Skating in Harlem launches its first chapter Figure Skating in

Detroit (FSD) in November 2016 under the direction of Dr. Geneva

Williams. More than 200 Detroit girls ages 6-15 have participated

in three community workshops, and a 5-day summer camp in

collaboration with the Detroit Skating Club and the Michigan

Women’s Foundation. FSD is firmly on the map. The ICE: I Can

Excel afterschool program begins in October.

2017 HIGHLIGHTS

COLLEGE & CAREER ACCESS “The 2014 high school graduation rate was only 64% and the

New York State Board of Education estimates that only 35%

of those graduates had the skills they needed to succeed in

college or start a career.”

Throughout the year, FSH high school students attended intensive

college prep workshops, toured college campuses, and participated

in high-quality SAT preparation courses. Science, Technology,

Engineering and Math, (STEM) careers were explored with exciting

Career Week visits to Yahoo!, Bloomberg and PIMCO.

SYNCHRONIZED SKATING TEAMS“ Organized sports activity helps children develop and

improve cognitive skills.”

(K-4th grade study by Piche, 2014).

2017 marked the 7th Anniversary of our Harlem Ice Synchronized

Skating Program. Our three teams were comprised of 41 FSH

girls, ranging in ages from 7 to 18 years old. Our Harlem Ice girls

are the only teams of color at competitions up and down the

Eastern seaboard. This year, two teams won gold medals at the

competitive meets, one with a rousing program inspired by

Hamilton: The American Musical.

HARLEM PROGRAMS

OPPORTUNITY, EDUCATION & LEADERSHIPICE: I Can Excel is our premiere after-school program that improves student academics, encourages

active lifestyles through figure skating and fitness classes, and strengthens leadership skills in girls

ages 6-18. At the start of every season, each girl makes a commitment to attend 9-15 hours per week

of on-ice instruction at our home rink at Riverbank State Park, and o-ice educational programming at

our Academic Center on 125th Street, and receives the support of more than 60 tutors, teachers, social

workers, counselors and skating coaches.

“ My tutors help me prepare for school. Sometimes my tutor teaches me things before I learn

them at school. I’m like wait.. I know what this is because my FSH tutor just told me about it.”

— Kayleen Flores, 4th Grade

Our popular Summer Dreams Camp runs for 6 weeks in July and August for a total of 35 hours per

week. Our students enjoy a daily variety of academic enrichment classes and cultural trips followed

by skating instruction at the City Ice Pavilion.

“ Summer Dreams Camp is amazing! My daughter attended for three years and learned and

grew so much (as a student and skater). The instructors knew her well and celebrated her

strengths and challenged/encouraged her in areas where she was weak.”

— Tyhesha Goss Elmore, Parent

COMMUNITY AND PARENT INVOLVEMENTCommunity and parent involvement distinguishes Figure Skating in

Harlem from other youth organizations. This year, more than 3,000

parents, family members, donors and community members joined

us in supporting our girls at public events in Harlem, including our

Annual Gwendolyn Simmons’ Soul on Ice Winter Skating Party,

Mission of Love Ice Shows, and Denise Hicklin Awards Ceremony.

“ The Winter Skating Party is an opportunity for parents

to show off their girls to an audience that often does not

know they exist! Once a year in Central Park, Harlem is

invited to come out and skate, sing and party along with

some of the youngest diplomats, the girls of FSH!”

— Brigida Littles, FSH Parent

For the past 20 years our events have been organized by Figure

Skating in Harlem’s dedicated Parents Association.

While our girls performed more than 25 numbers at the Mission

of Love Ice Shows, dozens more gave powerful speeches and

dynamic spoken word performances at our Annual Awards

Ceremony at Riverside Church.

“ I think Figure Skating in Harlem is a program where you get

to be yourself. Where young ladies gain confidence and feel

beautiful. Where girls build a community and lean on each

other, gain trust, and are not judged by one another.”

— Dianis Sosa, 7th Grade

DETROIT WORKSHOPS

CHAMPIONS IN LIFE BENEFIT GALA

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, Figure Skating in Harlem students and alumnae felt the support of

more than 400 donors, friends and family on May 2, 2017. The fundraiser brought in nearly 1 million dollars

in support of girls empowerment in this special landmark year!

Olympic medalist Sasha Cohen and philanthropist Curtis McGraw Webster were honored, and figure

skating icon and humanitarian, Scott Hamilton was presented with a special Power of Inspiration Award

by sports journalist, Andrea Joyce. Chair-Emeritus, Tamara Tunie, served as emcee for the evening, and

Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg was the Honorary Chair. Three alumnae were

recognized for their career achievements, and 5 seniors were awarded college scholarships by Tina

& Terry Lundgren.

Five current and former board chairs saluted Sharon Cohen on stage for her 20 years of leadership and

service. In a passionate speech, Cohen praised the board, sta, parents, students and donors, “I know

of no greater power, than that of a community that comes together with a purpose.”

Gala guests were joined by figure skating stars of the past, present, and future including Olympians

Meryl Davis, Evan Lysacek, Dick Button and JoJo Starbuck, as well as 2018 Olympic hopefuls and

three-time world medalists Maia and Alex Shibutani, three-time National Champion Ashley Wagner,

2017 National Champion Nathan Chen, and 2016 National Champion, Adam Rippon.

Detroit has been making headlines, and Figure Skating in Harlem is excited to be a part of this city in

transformation. In 2016, FSH expanded its reach by launching its first chapter, Figure Skating in Detroit

(FSD). Since November 2016, FSD has engaged more than 200 girls, ages 6-15, who have participated in

exciting community workshops, and a 5-day summer camp.

Olympic champion Meryl Davis and former

international competitive skater, Alissandra

Aronow, are hands-on supporters of the

program, and we have enlisted some

wonderful partners like the Michigan

Women’s Foundation, and the Detroit

Skating Club.

This fall, Figure Skating in Detroit will

launch its first ICE: I Can Excel After School

Program at the Jack Adams Ice Arena at

the Adams Butzel Recreation Complex in

northwest Detroit.

“ I could see what a unique opportunity it was for us to get together to help Detroit girls build

a foundation for lifelong success... I’m just so thrilled to be able to be a part of what I think is

more than a program. It’s an opportunity.”

— Dr. Geneva Williams, Detroit Leader (Detroit Free Press)

“ It’s exciting to see the young girls, many

of whom are getting out on the ice for

the first time. Whether you are learning

to skate or learning a new move, you fall

and have to pick yourself up. You learn to

appreciate your own ability.”

— Meryl Davis

“ I look around and see these young women who have graced the stage tonight, so confident, so

assured, so ready to tackle what’s next because of what this organization has done for them.

Because programs like this are needed in every city in the United States. It’s amazing how many

young people just need that opportunity, and we need to support it in every possible way.”

— Scott Hamilton, Figure Skating Icon & Humanitarian

With the growth of our Harlem programs and the launch of our first chapter in Detroit, our overall

revenue grew by 25% from FY16 thanks to increased generous contributions from our Board of

Directors, foundations, corporate and individual donors. A special thank you to our 20th Anniversary

Angels and our Champions for FSH charter members. Vigorous fundraising allowed us to meet our

increased obligations in this critical period of expansion to serve more girls with even deeper services.

Thank you for your generous support. You are truly Champions for FSH.
