The Kooks

The Kooks are a typical example of indie. Their style reflects this, by the clothes they wear such as skinny jeans,

plane white tops and jackets. Also their long, casual and slightly messy hair represents a cool and chilled out

attitude. They are the type of band that appeal to a wide audience between the ages of 14-30. The Kooks are one of

the main bands that inspired the indie style to increase. Their style and music is now very popular with other

bands and many young people.

The Kooks’ website also reflects their style. The use of black and white represents their calm style, and is similar to some of the outfits they wear. The website has a relaxed feel to it and it quite neat and organised, this could help to represent the band’s attitude as there is a huge picture of them altogether which draws the viewers attention immediately to the image.

Their newest album “Junk of the Heart” cover represents their creativity through the use of the smudged paint and stylish girl. She has her arms up in the air which could also convey a sense of freedom which would appeal to a target audience of people a similar age to her and give them inspiration. Out of all the album covers this is the most colourful. This could help portray the fact that even though they have been around for a while now, that doesn’t mean they are going to get boring. Therefore, this album art is made to look bold and excited.

In their music video “She moves in her own way” it contains a lot of footage of the band messing around and having fun. This reflects that they are care free and relaxed. They are performing on their tour bus which shows how focused on music they are and that it is their main value of life. The moving background out the window of the bus, helps the pace of

the music video and suggests that the band are always on the move which again shows how important their music is to them.

In “Always where I need to be” they also include a performance in the video. The performance is shot on the roof of the building which is a common convention of music videos. The background is of the New York skyline and I think this shows how The Kooks’ music is heard all around the world.

The Klaxons

The Klaxons are also of the indie/rock genre. However, their style has got a slight pop theme

which is portrayed through their colourful hoodies and tight jeans. They appeal to a young audience between the ages of 15-24. They appeal to these ages by creating quite a wild and exciting sound

and style.

The Klaxon’s website is presented in the way of a blog which represents youth, because of all the social networking sites such as Facebook and Tumblr. This helps the band to appeal to their young target audience. They font used for ‘Klaxons’ on this page could reflect their wild and crazy attitude. Also the pictures have a slight ‘random’ theme going on which also shows their style and genre of music. Their album cover ‘Myths of the near future’

contains many different bold contrasting colours and imagery. The artwork is very dream like and surreal which adds to their style. In this way, they are different from The Kooks because they are much more wild, however both bands produce the a similar genre of music.

The Klaxons music video “Echoes” is set in a desert. The band themselves and their instruments are the only objects present in the music video. It creates a dream like effect, and their outrageous outfits help to convey a “weird” theme. This also relates to the band’s style, because they like to be different and stand out.

The camera in the video is very shaky as it is hand held at some points. This adds a sense of confusion and disorientation which adds to the surrealism. The fact that they are the only ones in the scenery puts all the focus on them as a band and gives them superiority. It suggests that there is nothing more important to them than their music.
