What are the expectations for International Mentors?

International Mentors are expected to:

Midway University has taken great pride in providing a global education. We are committed to diversifying our current student body and giving them the opportunity to make cross-cultural connections.

As a result of our globalization efforts, there has been a significant increase in enrollment of international students. As we continue to grow, we want to ensure that we are providing the necessary resources for our students to be academically successful. To connect students to their campus and community, Midway’s Office of Multicultural and International Affairs (OMIA) has developed the International Mentor Program.

Are there requirements to become an International Mentor? · A person in your household must be at least 30 years of age. · Be single, a couple or a family with children. · Be able to provide your student with a bed for all overnight stays. · Be able to pass a background check. How can you start the process of becoming an International Mentor? 1. Complete and return the International Mentor application. 2. Sign a release for a background check.

What resources will Midway University provide to enhance therelationship between the student and their mentor?OMIA will send out updates and reminders periodically to keep mentors informed. We encourage mentors and students to attend the advertised events together. We will host at least one event per academic year for the entire International Mentor Program.

How old are the students and from where are they coming? The students range in age from 17 to 22 years old and come from a wide range of countries, including Panama, the United Kingdom, SouthKorea and others.

Do I get to choose my student?Yes, you can choose your student from their profiles. You have the choice of hosting a male or female.

Can I host more than one student?Yes!

Will there be language barriers?For most of Midway University’s international students, English is not their first language. Therefore, some students may have limited English proficiency.

Do I need to be bilingual in order to participate?It is not necessary for a mentor to be bilingual. In fact we encourage students and mentors to speak in English.

Will my student come with his/her own spending money?Students are expected to have their own spending money for personal expenses.

Does my student have health insurance?All international students have medical and health insurance. If you need to take a student to the hospital or any medical facility, we ask that you inform OMIA as soon as possible.

What happens if the placement doesn’t work out?OMIA will work with the mentor and student ot try to resolve miscommunications, unrealistic expectations or cultural misunderstandings. If it is determined that things cannot be resolved, the student will be placed with another mentor.
