What are camera shots & angles?

Camera shots show what the director wants the audience to see….and

‘how’ they see it

Camera Angles

Low angle

Camera movement

Pan – left to right/right to left Tracking – Dolly - Tilt – up or down Zoom – in or out Crane – Steadicam -

Panning

The camera is stationary and moves horizontally from left to right, or right to left.

Can follow a moving object or character, or establish the surroundings of a scene.

Tilting

The camera is stationary and tilts on a vertical plane – looking up or looking down.

Can ‘look’ a character or object from the base up or head down.

Dolly and Tracking shots

A dolly is a wheeled vehicle on tracks that has the camera secured to it.

It is used to move the camera around in a scene.

Also used to ‘track’ a character or object.

Crane or Boom shots

The camera is attached to the crane or boom and enables the director to produce dramatic footage.

Steadicam

• a steadicam allows the camera operator more freedom to move around and follow a character or action.
