Whangara is a small community in the northeast of New Zealand's North Island.

Located between Gisborne and Tolaga Bay, it is very important in the early history of the Ngāti Porou iwi (tribe).

According to Māori tradition, Kahutia Te Rangi is an ancestor of Ngāti Porou, a Māori tribe of the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. Kahutia Te Rangi became known as Paikea because he was assisted by humpback whales (the Maori name for the humpback whale is paikea). Kahutia Te Rangi is also known as the Whale Rider, who came to New Zealand on the back of a whale.

A marae is a place where Maori people can gather. Often funerals or weddings can be held on a marae, as well as meetings. A marae usually has the main house, a kitchen and dining room and a sleeping house.
