Feminism and Islam

• In 7th Century Islamic law (sharia) granted women property rights and divorce• Earlier than perhaps any other culture.

•When British Colonial Law was imposed, many women in the Islamic world lost these rights.

• The British also imposed Western standards of dress• Veiling -> resisting colonization.

• Westerners saw Islam as backward and anti-modern• (Western) Feminism seen as modern, western• Post-colonial societies resisted

westernization/colonization.• Thus the current status of women in the Islamic

world is directly related to colonialism .. Not necessarily Islam.
