  • Opportunity for Parents/Students to see a counsellor

    • Parent and student questions are often answered when they attend the presentations done by our Counselling Team - February 5th

    • In order for WGSS to determine what courses will be offered next year, all students need to enter their course requests before Spring Break.

    • After Spring Break, families will be able to review in MyEdBC the courses WGSS will be attempting to program students into for September (with the exception of Study Block, Student Aide and Leadership in Gator Pod).

    • Once students have entered their courses into MyEdBC, there is still opportunities to change those courses during a meeting with acounsellor.

    • During Parent-Teacher Conferences (on Thursday, March 14) parents will be able to see a counsellor for a 10 minute session for general questions.

    Courses

    Minimum Admission Average

    • Every institution has different “General Admission” requirements

    • All of institutions have a requirement that you must meet BC Ministry of Ed graduation requirements

    • Generally, there are the 5 factors to check

    • Search the “Undergraduate Admission” section of the university’s website to review the general admission requirements for that institution

  • Specific Admission Requirements

    Required Grade 12 courses

    (E.g. English + 3-5 other “Academic Grade 12 Courses”

In some cases there are Grade 11 course requirements

    (E.g. Science Faculty)

    Minimum percentage in specific courses

    (E.g. Math mark)

    Supplemental Application

    (E.g. Business Faculty)

    • Institutions also have “Specific Degree Requirements” for admission to each Faculty

    • Examples of the most common criteria include:

  • Grade 12 Academic Courses

    • Institutions have a specific number of Grade 12 courses that they review for admission – e.g. 3-6 Grade 12 courses, one of which is always an English Language Arts 12

    • The majority of other institutions in other provinces use 5 or 6 approved Grade 12 courses

    • All applicants need to check the “approved academic courses” on the institution’s website

    • Pre-Calculus 12 is required by virtually all Science, Applied Science and Business programs

    • AP Calculus 12 is required for most Engineering/Applied Science programs

  • BC Ministry of Ed: New Curriculum

Many institutions will be staying very close to what their admission requirements were for Fall 2019.

  • UBC AdmissionsEntrance Requirements for 2019-2020

In March 2018, UBC announced they were moving away from “Grade 12 Approved Course Lists” and instead would be evaluating students more holistically looking at the student’s Grade 11 and 12 courses to consider their depth, rigor, and relevancy to post-secondary studies.

    • UBC, SFU, UVIC will take the highest course mark for any academic Grade 11 or 12 course – no penalty is applied.

    • Waterloo – Engineering students are penalized 5% off their overall admission average for taking a course a second time to get a higher mark or taking a course at summer school or on-line.

    • U of Toronto - The Faculty of Arts & Science does not recommend students repeat courses and reserves the right to give preference for admission and scholarship consideration to students whose marks are the result of a single attempt at each course.

    • U of T - Rotman Commerce program considers only the first attempt mark.

    • McGill - averages the grades of all attempts of the same course
