First survey ( Shaanxi and Hubei Province)

Equipment were purchased/ made in Beijing

45 people were trained by IFAD advisor

1200 children in 60 villages were measured

Data were analyzed in Beijing by EpiInfo 6.04

Survey in Hubei was carried out independently without external assistance

Approximately 35% of children in the project area suffer from chronic malnutrition.

Small differences in the prevalence of malnutrition when the indicators are disaggregated by gender.

The malnutrition status in the two surveyed provinces are different.

Compared with rural average of 1998 in China, the malnutrition in the project area is more serious.
