The INCH Festival is a chance for all school community members to come together to eat and have fun while you learn about all the dif ferent cultures that are represented here at WFMS.

The poster contest deadline has been extended to Monday April 13. The winners of the poster contest will be announced at the Festival on the 16th.

This is our biggest, and most fun, event of the year and we need our community to make it happen!

SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITYMaryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented Students

The Maryland Summer Centers for Gif ted and Talented Students is celebrating its 48th year this summer. Program available for Gif ted and Talented students/advanced learners from grades 3 through 12 this year. Subject areas include Ecosystem Education, Engineering and Robot Design, Fine and Performing Arts, Creative Writing, Physics of Wind and Solar Power, Space Engineering and Robotics, as well as Biotechnology and Forensic Science. Some Centers offer a residential experience and others are held during the day only. ALL Centers offer partial or full f inancial assistance! Minorit ies and students with disabilit ies are encouraged to apply.

For more information and to begin the NEW ONLINE APPLICATION process, please visit the Center website at :www.marylandpublicschools.org/ summercenters. Application should be completed by about April 17. Applications will be reviewed STARTING April 17, but the application period ends when the Center is f il led. Also note that the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts at Salisbury University has an April 10th deadline (as AUDITIONS) must be scheduled. CONTEST WINNERCongratulations to Christopher Pondoc for his winning entry, ?Meteor Math Core? in the Maryland Society for Educational Technology 6-8 Games and Apps contest. His work will be presented as among the best from across the state of Maryland. The hard work and dedication he put in to achieving this outstanding award is evident in his project. His achievement will be honored at the Common Ground 2015 Conference in Ocean City, Maryland. Throughout the entire conference, student projects will be on display for educators, administrators and professionals from around the state to showcase the best of what Maryland has to offer. Outstanding work Chris!

SHINE YOUR SMILE DAYWest Frederick Middle School is hosting Smile Programs...the mobile dentist on May 14th

Smile Programs will set up a mini-dental off ice here at the school and can provide dental examinations, cleanings, f luoride treatments, x-rays and sealants. In addition, restorative services such as f il l ings will be available (if needed) with Medicaid or insurance coverage.

Medicaid and CHIP cover 100% of treatment. Smile Programs can also provide services to families who need f inancial assistance and it has subsidized fees for those who choose to pay for the preventive care.

Signing up your children to see the mobile dental team is an easy way to get necessary preventive dental care. If a parent wants their child to see the

dentist on "Shine Your Smile Day", just f il l out the permission slip and return it to school by May 1st. If you have any further questions please contact Tracey Wedge, WFMS Community Liason, at 240-236-4090 (Permission Form-English / Formulario de Permiso en Español )

The 8th Grade Panoramic picture will be taken on Thursday, April 23rd, in the morning. All 8th grade students will be included in the whole group picture, purchase is NOT required.  For those who do want to purchase a copy of the picture, the cost is $16.00 per picture; orders will be collected the morning of the picture, not before.  Order forms were sent home earlier this week.

Spring portraits will also be taken on Thursday, April 23rd. These pictures are optional, only students who purchase these pictures will be allowed to have them taken.  Order forms were sent home earlier this week, orders are due the morning of the picture, not before.

CADET STUDENT COUNCILYes, we are stil l collecting Box Tops!! Teachers should be collecting them from their HOMEROOM students.

The current grade level standings are posted in the cafeteria on the big ice cream cones.

We will make a final collection on April 25th.

The grade level with the most turned in (current) Box Tops will win free ice cream on May 13th.

Ms. Howser is offering a STEM Enrichment club after school for 6th Grade students on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4pm. If you have a 6th grader who is interested, please contact Ms. Howser at [email protected]

Advanced Coding

Ms. Howser is offering an Advanced Coding group after school with mentoring by experienced coders from Urbana High School. There is room for a few more students!  If you have a child who has coding experience and would like to learn from some experienced mentors, please contact Ms. Howser at [email protected]

Frederick County History Day Competition

WFMS was represented by 30 students at the county History Day competit ion, and we did very well! Several projects advanced to the state competit ion, which will be held May 2 at UMBC.  Please join me in congratulating these students:

History Night at WFMS

We will be showcasing projects that 6th and 8th grade students completed for History Day in our f irst ever History Night. History Night will be held on Monday, April 27, from 5-7 pm.  Feel free to stop by and peruse the wonderful work that students did in researching their topics on the theme of Leadership and Legacy in History.

Upcoming 6th Grade Field Trip

6th Graders will be taking a f ield trip to STEM Day at Harry Grove Stadium on May 7. In addition to participating in many STEM activit ies at the ballpark, students will be watching a Frederick Keys baseball game.  Information was sent home through Social Studies classes, but permission slips can be found here: http:/ / goo.gl/ p47gYY

Upcoming 8th Grade Field Trip

8th grade students will be taking a f ield trip to Harpers Ferry on Thursday, May 28. We will need many parent chaperones to accompany us on this fun outing.  More details will be coming home soon.

Congratulations to Joyce Li, who came in 6th place at the County Spelling Bee, and to Jacek Milauskas, who represented WFMS at the Maryland State Geographic Bee. We are proud of both of you!

HAL HappeningsSixth Grade

Mrs. Miller?s students are in the midst of a PBL project where they're working in teams to research a system of the body that they randomly selected and creating a brochure that will become part of a class display for the class. They are responsible for "teaching" their peers about their particular system; brochures must be electronic so they can be shared through Google Classroom. Projects are due April 24th.

Eighth Grade

Mrs. Farioli?s students are writ ing poems for the National Student Poetry Contest (19th annual). The students write a poem (no more than 20 lines) on any subject (such as dreams, aspirations, friendship, etc) in any style (except concrete/ shape poems). Good luck to these students!

Mrs. McGrew?s students are working on corroborating sources and analyzing primary source documents.
