System Center Operations Manager a key component of the System Center family of Systems Management products from Microsoft. Operations Manager is the part of the system that Monitors systems. The current released version is 2007 R2. It monitors systems and offers IT Managers the tools and assistance to keep their applications running smoothly. It gives IT visibility through views or dashboards into the health, availability, performance and configuration of systems. When there are problems, the system raises alerts and offers knowledge on how to resolve the issues. In some cases it can even automate the process of fixing the issues. It also has reporting capability for looking at the data collected and doing analysis and reporting.

With Operations Manager 2007 R2 customers are also able to improve their availability and performance metrics through enhanced service level monitoring.

Operators can gain rapid insight into the state of the IT environment, and the IT services running across different systems and workloads. It works in heterogeneous environments and the workload can be broken down to any number of different levels or rolled up if you prefer.

We will talk more about Management Packs later. For now, a Management Pack is a delivery mechanism to extend and enhance the capabilities of Operations 2007 R2. 4System Center Architecture

I do not want to drill too deep into the architecture, but I do want to show at a very high level the architecture of Operations Manager. An Operations Manager Management Server collects data either through agents or network queries and stores that data in an SQL database. A workload server with an Operations Manager agent installed can collect far more data than an server without an agent. The agent reports back to the Management server on a predefined interval to give it the data desired depending on the workloads installed on that machine. The management server constantly looks at the data collected and takes action if action is needed. An operator connects to the Management server via an administration console which could simply be his desktop (or a web interface). The data is presented to the operator in different views and with drill down capability. Front End Web Servers, Application Servers, Database Servers and all other infrastructure can roll up for a simplistic but complete monitoring solution.5Monitoring SharePoint Mission Critical!!!!Monitoring facilitates health and availability of this systemSharePoint is a complex service oriented systemMonitoring sourcesWindows event logWindows servicesObject model calls to ping the servicePerformance countersSPHA rules (SP Health Analyzer)Much More!!!Over recent years SharePoint has become a vital and critical part of the infrastructure. Like other critical systems monitoring and managing these workloads can increase performance and reliability. SharePoint is not just a service that runs on a server. It is a complex system that has many components. Because of this, there is a management pack specifically built to monitor SharePoint 2010.Some of the monitoring sources include the Windows Event Log and the Windows Services. If for example WWW services are having a problem, that will certainly impact SharePoint. You can setup calls to ping the service or even record a sequence of steps to navigate through a website as an example to confirm availability. You can use run as credentials and monitor the time it takes to complete the steps. If it takes longer than you would like then the system can raise a warning or even an error state. Any number of other performance counters can be looked at when monitoring SharePoint. Most are probably aware of the SharePoint Health Analyzer that is part of SharePoint 2010. That is the component that alerts you when you log into central administration if there is a problem. Operations Manager can raise the visibility of these alerts by acting on these rules. 6Consolidate Management PackSharePoint Foundation ServicesSharePoint ServerProject ServerSearch ServerOffice Web AppsAccess ServiceLoad Balancer ServiceBusiness Data ConnectivityClaims AuthExcel Calculation ServicesManaged MetadataPerformance PointSecured StoreSearch ServiceUser Profile ServiceVisio GraphicsUsage ServiceForm ServicesWord Automation2007 Vs 2010WSS / MOSS 2007SharePoint 2010ChangeDiscoveries516300%Classes101331293%Monitors28240300%Rules23510745%Reports27933%SPHA RulesNA100+100%TechNet KAsNA~150100%This table highlights the changes in SharePoint 2010 Reports 8Management Pack DeliverablesSharePoint Foundation MPSharePoint Foundation MP GuideMicrosoft SharePoint Server MPMicrosoft SharePoint Server MP GuideSharePoint MP config file
