kEn’S kORnER for Gardening Tips

Spring is bursting out all over the place. Ever feel like your early spring garden is nothing more than a beautifully set banquet table for Slugs and Deer. My wife’s favorite slug control is a sharp shovel and an evil laugh as she slices them up. And she names our deer. I think we may have some more effective ways to help you combat these unwanted garden visitors.

SLuGS Slugs are probably the most common pest in our gardens, especially in these cool wet early parts of the season. Getting an early start and being consistent can be big in helping you control slug damage. One trick when using baits is to not bait directly next to a particular plant you want to protect. The slug then uses your plant as the appe-tizer for their last meal of Slug Bait. Put the bait in areas you know slugs like to hide. Ground covers, garden trash, boards and rocks are all great places for slugs to hide.Baits using Metaldehyde have been around for a long, long time and are very effective. Please be aware these baits can be toxic to your pets and other wild-life, so please follow the label directions as to place-ment and use of all Metaldehyde based slug baits. Deadline, Corry’s and Ortho’s Buggetta are all examples of Metaldehyde based baits available at any WFC location. Baits using Iron Phosphate such as Sluggo, are pet and wildlife safe and have the added benefit of not needing to be applied at as heavy a rate when using. They should look kind of like salt & pepper on your mashed potatoes when you finish. Sluggo is available at all WFC outlets.

dEER Deer are very curious and really quite persistent. A key to keeping deer from momma’s prize roses is variety. There are many, many formula-tions of Deer Repellants. They all work to some ex-tent, but if you use the same one over and over deer will start to ignore what was once working for you. So here is a great way to keep you efforts showing results. Change it up using your favorite liquid until you run out then switch to a granule. Use up the granule and go back to a different liquid. Throw in a mechanical annoyance like putting a battery oper-ated Radio out for a day or two with the volume set just loud enough to be heard or hang old CD’s in the bushes. We stock a wide range of Animal Repel-lants in all of our locations. Liquids include Liquid Fence, Deer away, Ortho’s Deer B Gone and others. Granules include Shake away, Critter Ridder and others. Deer Netting and Deer Fencing are also effective means of control, but be aware deer are leapers and any enclosure needs to be a minimum of 7-8 feet tall to be effective.
