WetRacer : Where are you from?
Zack: Born & raised in Lancaster, CA
WetRacer: Who got you into Jet Skis ? What was the first ski yourode and where?
Zack: I basically got myself into it really. I went and bought my firstski (FX-1) by myself and learned at the lake while my friends wake-
boarded. I havent stopped since. The first ski I rode was a 650SX
right in front of Crazy Horse Campground in Lake Havasu, AZ. I
think I was 11. I knew I wanted one then and there.
WetRacer: Where is your favorite riding spot?
Zack: Id have to say my home turf, Ventura, CA. Its where every-
thing began, but I also love Oceanside and Pismo, CA.
How long have you been riding?
WetRacer: Since the Joe Kenny Freeride, October, 2008What is your most memorable experience riding?
Zack: Um....so many haha. One that sticks in my head is riding mon-
sters at Todos Santos, Mexico.... and then sinking the ski there....7mile tow...I dont think Ill ever forget that!
WetRacer: What ski did you start out riding and what do you ride
now?
Zack: I started out riding a beat up 96 Superjet. It was a great skifor learning. I put it through paces and it held up. I just recently
built a Fiberglass Rickter FR-2 and Im absolutely in love with the
ski. Its like a short board surf board compared to a Superjet being
like a longboard. It has opened the doors to a lot more possibili-
ties for surf riding and has really helped me become a better rider
all around. The Rickter has a Yamaha 701, 62T/61X. 00 cylinders,
no porting, stock bore, Cold-Fusion billet head, Cold-Fusion billet
lightened Kawi-style couplers, Cold-Fusion billet mid-shaft assem-bly, Cold-Fusion billet internal fuel filler, Cold-Fusion billet battery
cage, Cold-Fusion billet o-ringed flywheel cover, ATP billet single
carb intake manifold, single 46 Jetworks BlackJack carb, Factory

WetRacer: What are your accomplishments?
Zack : Finished 4th place in Amateur class in The Blowsion SurfSlam in 09. That was my first competition ever.
Got invited out of 20 International riders, to compete in The Australian
Freeride Open at Goldcoast, Australia. I didnt do too hot, but ANY-WAY hahaha, it was my first pro contest. I was involved with Nasency
Projects Obscurity & Divinity Film in January and also with Liquid
Militia/Hypnotic Films Rise Of The Tide film in February.
I finished 2nd place in the Grayland AM contest,and also got sickest
trick award and the carnage award.
This year I finished 9th Place at the 2010 Blowsion SurfSlam and got
1st Place in the K&S Kuwait Big Air competition at the 2010 Blowsion
SurfSlam.
WetRacer: How did you feel not making it into the final round
Slam this year?
Zack: Well, considering Darrin qualified 2nd and I qualifieknew it was going to be tough. Darrin is an amazing rider

wasted a lot of time looking for ramps....that never came..... a
thing you know, the yellow flag was out. I blew it! I rode the

As the media circus thrust themselves into the gulf coastcommunities the whole world descended with them. Holding on tothe armrests of their favorite recliner with a white knuckle grip inanticipation that this catastrophe had not really happened. Locallyat first it was just a major fire on an off shore rig, it wasnt until acouple days later that the scope of what was to come started tosink in. Gulf coast life as we know it was about to change.
Those of you that dont live on the coastlines of the na-tion can only start to understand what has and is still happeninghere on the gulf coast. As the media has shown, the tourism isdown, charter fishing industry is down ( nearly non-existent), thedive industry down, the coastal restaurant industry down, and allwater based events are just starting to come back as the seasonis coming to a close on labor day. Coastal business has lost hun-dreds of millions this year due to the catastrophic neglect of asingle oil industry giant. Being a gulf coast native and local surferturned surf rider, I can remember back to the early 80s when wewere getting the tar balls from the IXTOC spill that had occurred inthe bay of Campeche off the coast line of the Yucatan peninsula.Most locals have forgotten that incident and in the wake of the cur-rent disaster It is evident that nothing had been learned from theMexican disaster. The IXTOC spill was caused by the same type ofBlow Off Preventer failure as the deep water horizon spill of today.The IXTOC spill was at its time the largest accidental spill to date.
As our industry is trying to make a rebound to its once greatstatus of the early 90s the spill has has put the local communitiesin to a recovery state scrambling for the tourist dollars that they
can recover. In the first few weeks of this disaster I was on phone regularly with A.J. Handler from the IJSBA trying to hin any way I could with the Panama City Beach event that wscheduled only a couple of weeks after the start of the prevaccident. Luckily, the event held at The Boardwalk Beach RPanama City Beach, Florida, was not effected by the effectspill. Wetracer was on site to cover some of the event and pout a few mags to the large group of sickos that showed upthe surf races in full force. All I can say to all that attended you for coming to our gulf coast and supporting our comm
I had a great time meeting new people and getting the chabe around some of the truly great people that make our spogreat. I left the PCB event early sunday morning ( after somdawn patrol action) to make the two hr drive home to our thcovered beaches.. I say oil covered, but in reality the extent of the damalocally was minimal and has been under control since the fsigns of oil. This was not with out its own setbacks. Local gernments took it into their own hands to make preparationsimplemented plans that were not pre-approved by BPS offwho continually shot down the efforts to be proactive in thetection of our Florida coastline. Personally I can only attributo the fact that Florida does not allow drilling off its coast anseems to be, once again in my opinion, why you could not the same amount of effort here that was to be found to the walong the coastal areas of the states that do support drillingspill has been stopped and clean up efforts have been redto minimal levels. Our waters are back open to recreationalcommercial business, but at what cost? The season is overthe money is lost, families have been displaced and brokenThe big oil company still dragging their feet on payments arelief. The coastal communities are very resilient to disasterwill bounce back form this preventable accident in the samward fashion that is taken each and every t ime there is a nadisaster.
It doesnt matter where you live this was and is a disof epic proportion as lives were lost, families were broken, communities were challenged. Please travel to you closest community and see it for yourself. Have a nice meal, stay foone night and ejoy what they have to offer. This is the only wthese coastal communities will survive and bounce back frochallenge to survive.

ANSWERS:
Justin,I have had a pretty good year so far rac-ing both APBA and IJSBA. I won 6 NationalTitles this year, three 1st. Places, two 2nd.Places and one 3rd. Place. They said itmight have been the first time a racer haswon 3 National Championships in one day
and I thought that was pretty cool. Theythought it might have also been the first timea Junior has won all 3 Junior Classes. I alsowon the IJSBA UWP Tour Championship inthe Expert Ski Limited class and I was prettyexcited about that too. I started off racingJunior Ski classes and actually won everyJunior race in both APBA and IJSBA that Icompeted in this year. Mike Young allowedme to race with the Novice Ski class and Idid pretty good and Brian Smith took a big
chance with me and allowed me to step upand race the Expert Ski class and the Pro-Am Ski GP class in Dallas. It was so cool tobe on the line with Chris MacClugage, RobFlores and all the guys I look up to.
The best part about getting to race differentclasses is meeting so many different peo-ple. This year I made a lot of new friends inthe Junior classes but also met some re-ally cool older racers. I think racing kind ofestablishes a bond between the racers andnow I am pretty good friends with some ofthe guys in Amateur, Expert and Pro-Am.I even have some good friends from other
countries as well.
I have trained really hard and could nothave done as well without a lot of help fromothers. My mom, dad and sisters all giveme so much support it is crazy! Even myGrandparents, Uncles and Cousins come tosome of my races. Tim Judge is my me-chanic and builds most of my skis. He isone of our best friends and I know my Skiswill always run great when he builds them.He is a Perfectionist and knows how to buildmy confidence before the race which is re-ally good. Chris and Rachel MacClugage
also help me with my Skis and everythingelse. I look up to him more than any otherracer and they are also our good friends.They really look out for me and I appreciateall their help. Cade and Chris Poole, GavinReed and some of the other Juniors reallyhelp me with my riding. They are like someof my best friends. Brian Smith from R5 X-Water Racing has also become one of mybest friends and has interviewed me on hisradio show Liquid Speed Radio several
times. He was also the first Race Prto give me a check which I immediaspent on an X-Box 360. Mike Youngcoolest Promoter and AJ and his wiways put on a great race. Scott FrazPatrick Mell are the ones that alloweto step up from the Junior class andally appreciate them for taking a chme. Cliff Roy is my adopted FatheFather & Son race and is the best Rrector in the business. Pete from Riving helps us with a lot of our parts aawesome. Alex from APDesigns is tpainter on the planet and is the onemy Kawasaki X2 and my helmets. C

advance in the sport and I could not havedone it without each of them.* Horror StoriesI have had two major bad things happensince I started racing Jetskis. Last year Igot to be good friends with Cesar Vismaraat the World Finals and was actually on theline when his tragic accident happened. Hecame by right before the race and gave mea Thumbs Up and said Life is Good.
I will always remember that. I came homefrom Havasu last year and started trainingto race Motocross at the 2009 AMA Mini-OsWinter Nationals with over 3000 racers. My15 year old riding buddy got killed the verynext weekend while we were practicing atour hometown track. I was devastated byboth deaths only a week apart from eachother.
I came home after the Winter Nationalswith some hearing loss and we had Dr.Connelly, my doctor, discover I had a raredisorder called Chiari Malformation. I wastold I would have to have brain surgery andcould not race or play sports. I was so de-pressed and even had to be homeschooledby order of the Neurologist. My mom anddad called the best doctors and immedi-ately flew me to New York to see the bestdoctor in the U.S. for this disorder. I can stillremember sitting in his office when I askedcan I still race jetskis and dirtbikes and hesaid yeah, if you win the World Champion-ship and send me a video. I was so happyat that moment and we were all in such agreat mood on the way home on ChristmasEve. It was the best Christmas presentever!* Public SchoolMy Principal at South Walton High School,Mr. Charles Marello, allowed me to miss
school in order to compete at these races.he was really excited about my racing andhas really supported me in it. He is awe-some and so are MOST of my teachers. Ireally like school because I can hang outwith my friends and go to all the games as Iuse to play Football, Baseball and Soccer.*Trials and Tribulations
I really havent had many problems withracing this year. All my equipment that
Judge Motorsports builds is the best and Iam surrounded by the best people. I trainharder than almost anybody except ChrisMacc, his workout is crazy. Most everyonehas supported my racing but there havebeen a few people who were maybe a littleupset about me advancing. I think thereis always some jealousy if you are doingpretty good and I guess that just comes
along with it. The only real problem I havehad was knocking the bottom out of myHydrospace hull on the log jump in thelast moto in the Nationals. I just got it threeweeks before at the Lake Hartwell race. Mydad wasnt too happy about that but he waspretty cool because he knew that is part oftraining for the Pro-Am races.* Plans for next year
I plan on training harder than ever and havestepped up my training to a crazy levelin the gym. I am also working on my dietwhich has always kind of sucked. That ishelping a lot so far. I plan on racing evenmore races in both the APBA and IJSBAnext year and hope to win some tour cham-pionships. I really want to win the WorldChampionship in Expert and Pro-Ski nextyear. Tim Judge and Chris Macc are help-ing me build a badazz Hydrospace that Iwill be racing in Open next year.Although Ijust turned 15 at the Charleston race, I willprobaly not race any more Junior classes
next year maybe except at the Natiand World Finals. I really want to seGavin, Shawna, Tyler, Michael, Taylall my Junior buddies race while I juback, relax and spectate. They are good racers and the girls are givingboys a run. I am also hoping to getpart in the new Fast and Furious mabout jetski racing, that would be toMy biggest goal is to get a sponsorwith somebody like Monster Energy

strong and fearless was Fullerton, CAs Mark Gomez on his trade-mark Superjet. Last years amateur Freeride champion, Mark at-tacked the waves without pause and proved to the world that hebelongs in the Pro ranks. Frances Pierre Maixent was all rockstar with his ultimate extensions and body language that makehim stand out from the ranks while Atascadero, CA local StantonHigh also looked strong and on top his game. When the final heatwas over some Freeride heavy hitters were heartbreakingly on theoutside looking in to Sundays big show, but they left an indelible
impression on the fans and offered one heck of a preview for themain event.
They race them things?? Hellz yes they race them things,and when its in the surf, it cant be beat for extreme action! TheIJSBA Motosurf championships were divided into two classes - Proand Amateur. The Am race was anyones for the taking and Tan-ner Thomas of Ketchikan, Alaska stepped up big time, taking homethe big win in front a pack of hungry riders from all over the globe.Tanner shot off the line without looking back on his Blowsion/HydroTurf sponsored SXR and solidified his lead in the pounding surf asconfusion and chaos took their toll on the other riders. By mid-race
the pack tightened up into a knot of skis battling not other, but with head high rollers slapping them in thener took the checkered flag and the top spot on the Zealands Tim Allen held off the charge from Joe Gathey finished second and third respectively. Shawn Peter Sarmiento rounded out the top five and went hhaving done well in some of the toughest conditions world.
A special bonus to the program this year was wait Big Air Showdown where the sickest of the sick the crowds (and the cash) in an all out display of cajCold Fusions Zach Bright of Lancaster, CA took homfor his efforts and whipped the crowd into a frenzy wes into the stratosphere. It looked like he could jump
house! Top gunner Darin Anderson also got nutty antricks twenty plus feet in the air. Not to be outdone, and Cuong Son showed that they also had their PWCand blasted off with all the flare and speed of a rockcrowd loved this portion of the program as there werhits and giant wipeouts. As Main Event Sunday got underway we all ronational anthem, anxiously looking forward to seeingFirst up were the Amateur Freeride finals featuring thbunch busting out their best for the trophy. Alex Fedall the way from Luxemburg, Belgium and was not gowithout the hardware. He raised the bar once more smack down on his buddies. Taking runner up spot win was Antiochs Tim Allen who also hit it hard and much the pro. Young Tanner Thomas was rockin thelogos and dishing out some slick tricks in the shore ghim third place and the final podium spot.

Rider: Alec Hohnadell
WetRacer: what other sports have you done?
Alec: I have raced Motocross since I was 6 years old, played CityLeague Football, Baseball and Soccer. I have trained 6 years inMixed Martial Arts and enjoy Snow skiing, Wake boarding and Div-ing.
WetRacer: what do you enjoy the most about the sport?
Alec: I really like racing Jetskis because racing is such a rush. I likeall racing but am concentrating on Watercraft and Mini-Motocross. Ilike the friends that I race with and like spending time with my fam-ily. It brings us together almost every weekend.
WetRacer: do your parents support you racing?
Alec: My parents are very involved with all my interests. They spendall of their off time and a lot of their money on my racing and arealways there when I am training as well. My dad takes me Jetskiingor riding Motocross every week. My mom has never missed a race
and always supports me, even when I use to crash a lot and shewould worry the whole time. My sisters would also come and watchme train and come to some of my races when they werent in col-lege.
WetRacer: whats your favorite ski and why?
Alec: It is a tie. I love my 2005 Kawasaki X2 that Macc Racing built
for me. It is pretty rare and is totally sick. They did awesomand AP Designs did an awesome paint job. My 2009 Yamperjet Limited is my favorite ski to ride because Tim Judgereal fast and it handles excellent. He is the best engine bualso built my 2009 Yamaha Superjet Stock class ski.
WetRacer: how often do you practice with others?
Alec: I practice with Cade Poole a couple of t imes a week my riding buddy. Derric Kantz comes over to our buoy co
trains a lot. Gavin Reed and Tyler Smith come down to ridsometimes and that is cool.

WetRacer: what do you enjoy most about the sport?
Gale: I love Watercraft racing and it is such a great family The people you race with are awesome and Alecs sponsothe best. Everyone teams together to try and pull off a winPoole and Jeff Lutker got us into the sport when we were jMotocross. My Wife and I go to every race with Alec so it
family event. Our daughters also try and attend. Alecs Grents, Uncles and Cousins also come to watch.
WetRacer: what is the history of your participation in the spwatercraft racing?
Gale: I just got into Watercraft racing March 2009 when Alrode a stand-up jetski. I have always had boats and water

use to race boats back in the late 70s and early 80s. We racedMotocross since Alec was 6 and just sort of transitioned into it. Weenjoy it even more than Motocross because it appears safer, youare always in a bathing suit on a beautiful beach or lake and thepeople are cool.
WetRacer: do you feel it is a big sacrifice to support the kids in rac-ing?
Gale: I always tell Alec I could have a new sports car for whatwe spend on his racing. It takes a lot of time and money but wewouldnt do anything different if we had it to do over again. We willalways support Alecs racing because it brings us together as afamily and builds a kids character and makes him a much moreconfident, successful and better person. Racing brings out thebest in a person and keeps them focused and out of trouble.

Chris: I enjoy everything about thesport, from the hands on time ofwrenching to the freedom of surfriding. I own LIQUID FIX Watercraftrepair and Ride on water sports rentalsin Destin, Florida. So basically otherthan my son Cade, water sports is mylife.
WetRacer: what is the history of yourparticipation in the sport of watercraftracing?
Chris: I raced my first race in 1995 ona 94 square nose superjet and washooked on the competitive nature ofthe sport. I took several 1st place po-diums that season in the novice class.Then following my new addiction, Iraced hard from 1998 200 placingfirst in the region and 10th over allin the world finals in 1999 and 2000inn super stock class on a YamahaGP1200.
WetRacer: do you feel itsacrifice to support theracing?
Chris: Not at all, I dont as a sacrifice. I see it mreward to see Cades ament and happiness. itstressful from time to timworth every minute.

Jeff: Yes because they are the future of oursport and if we do not make sacrifices tothem and commit the sport will eventuallydie. If it wasnt for the kids and their passionfor compitition we would surly not haveas many adults still involved envolved andshowing up to the races.
WetRacer: If any what changes would youlike to see in racing?
Jeff: I would like to see a fair playing field ,what i mean is stock class should be boxstock and 2 strokes should race 2 strokesnot against 4 strokes . Not everyone has themoney to go out and buy a 4 stroke, espi-cially in the 10 to 12 classes we would havemore people show up to race if they felt theirkids had a chance to win and 2 strokes rac-ing against 4 strokes just inst fair!
