WESTSTAR DEFENCE INDUSTRIES SIGNS PROCUREMENT CONTRACT WITH MINDEF FOR THE SUPPLY AND COMMISSIONING OF STARSTREAK VSHORAD GROUND BASED AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM Press Release Kuala Lumpur, 19 April 2016: Global Komited Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Weststar Defence Industries signed a procurement contract with Ministry of Defence Malaysia, (MINDEF) for the procurement of state-of-the-art STARStreak Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) system from Thales Air Defense Limited UK at Defence Services Asia 2016 trade exhibition, Putra World Trade Center. Witnessed by Weststar Defence Industries’ CEO, Datuk Arsad Abd Salam, the contract was signed between The Weststar Group’s Managing Director, Tan Sri Dr. Syed Azman Syed Ibrahim and Defence Ministry Secretary General, Dato’ Sri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi. Defence Minister of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein was present at the signing. In light of the contract, Global Komited has been appointed as the main contractor to oversee the development, delivery and commissioning of the ground based air defence system that spans across a four-year period. The system is a leading VSHORAD system available in the market today, hence augmenting MINDEF’s capability to enhance national sovereignty in protecting key national assets against both established and modern emerging threats. As a whole, the program will be key in enhancing the capabilities of Malaysia’s air defense forces procured through a trade-in program of obsolete Starburst missiles. The integrated air defense system comes with a complete package that includes surveillance radar and command and control systems. In effect, Weststar Defence has successfully carried out the fulfillment of MINDEF’s interim operational needs with recent delivery of the missiles and associated systems. Currently, the system has already been deployed by the Malaysian Armed Forces. Presently the fastest very short-range air defense missile system, THALES has engineered and produced the new generation missile system with a peak velocity of over Mach 3. The missile boasts the ability to fly a kilometer under a second. Further, with the assistance of a laser beam guiding system, the operator controls all three dart-missiles

simultaneously. Effectively, the laser beam guiding system increases positive target and reduces the risk of collateral damage. The Malaysian defense industry will also benefit from the offset agreement instituted with the procurement program. Among the benefits to be reaped is the transfer of technology of hardware and software applications that correlates to the systems. In addition, the procurement includes operators and technicians’ training packages to ensure smooth operation of the system throughout its life cycle. A firing exercise conducted recently marked one of the early milestones of the four-year program. The successful firing was witnessed by YB Dato’ Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein carried out at Lapang Sasar Bumi ke Udara Tg. Logok, Johor.
