Musings from Matt . . .
I’m often asked about how one should observe Lent. Is there some practice or rule to follow. I’m not really
one for pre-prescribed “how-to” lists. They don’t often work for me. However, the “recipe” below was
shared by a friend of mine. I really liked it. Even though it will be difficult, maybe it is a good list for Lent.
A GREAT RECIPE…for Life
Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.
Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Talk to God about what is going on in your life.
When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, ‘My purpose is to _______ today. I am
thankful for _______.’
Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
Try to make at least three people smile each day.
Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip, energy vampires, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you
cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.
Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
Life is too short to waste time hating someone.
Don’t take yourself too seriously. No one else does.
You are not so important that you have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.
Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
Frame every so-called disaster with these words: ‘In five years, will this matter?’
Forgive everyone for everything.
What other people think of you is none of your business.
GOD heals everything – but you have to ask Him.
However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch!!!
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements:
‘I am thankful for _______. Today I accomplished _______.’
Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
When you are feeling down, start listing your many blessings.
You’ll be smiling before you know it.
It’ll be just that simple and just that hard.
Shalom,
Matt

Many Thanks….
Since I broke both wrists on January 24, 2018 in a
bad fall on the ice, I am unable to write thank you
notes. I want to express my sincere thank you to
my church family for the flowers, food, cards,
notes, taxi service — and most of all the prayers.
I owe a very special thank you to Penny Thomson
and Peggy Yurkovich for filling in for me on Soup
and Sandwich Day.
Thank you again.

A note from Donna Abbott:

in less than 24 hours. I have one more test to go
through the end of February or first part of
March down here with a GI Specialist.
Think of all the loved one there at the church and
pray they’re doing OK.
Love to all,

SPEND AN EVENING WITH JOHN DEAR ON HIS NEW BOOK:
They Will Inherit the Earth: Peace & Nonviolence in a Time of Climate Change
April 5, 2018, 7:00-9:00 PM
San Damiano Hall, University of St. Francis,
520 Plainfield Road, Joliet, Il, 60435
You are invited to the University of St. Francis on April 5, 2018 for an evening of reading, reflection and book-signing with longtime activist, priest, author and Nobel peace prize nominee John Dear about his new book, “They Will Inherit the Earth,” a landmark work which connects the way of active nonviolence with solidarity with Creation; shows how our global epidemic of violence and war could only lead to catastrophic climate change; and why we need to help build up the global grassroots movement of nonviolence if we are to pro-tect creation. He cites Jesus’ third Beatitude as the basis for his meditation: "Blessed are the meek, they will inherit the earth." Thomas Merton said "meekness" was the biblical word for “nonviolence” (in the Gandhi/King sense), so Dear notes how Jesus connected nonviolence with oneness with creation, how he practiced nonviolence and lived at one with creation, and how we need to do the same. John Dear will invite us to rise to the occasion, deepen our nonviolence, take new steps into active solidarity with Mother Earth and suffer-ing humanity, and do what we can to welcome a new culture of peace and nonviolence. Rev. John Dear is a long-time peace activist, lecturer and teacher, and the author of 35 books including Thomas Merton Peacemaker; Lazarus Come
Forth!; Living Peace; The Nonviolent Life; and The Beatitudes of Peace. He has been nominated many times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including by
Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He works with CampaignNonviolence.org and the Vatican Nonviolence Initiative and lives in New Mexico. (Contact
