The climate of the Sierra Foothills is changing and the landscape design for the Western Slope Boy’s and Girl’s Club represents that reality and the future avai lability of our water resources. It is our intention to have the landscaping scheme as a model for future development for the Sierra foothills by using indigenous and drought tolerant material in a tasteful and expressive way with form, structure and seasonal color. The scheme was developed with Architectural Nexus’ site planning group in collaboration with City staff. We believe this model will be an illustrative example of an appropriate landscape solution that the City of Placerville and other communities can use demonstrating that xeriscape can be rich, colorful and inviting. The Planting Plan The Planting Plan illustrates a truly water-wise planting scheme: 28 of the 30 species represented are low-water use & 12 of the 30 species used are native to the region. The existing trees are mature along the northwest and southwest corners of the project and our planting plan supplements these habitat-rich areas with new native and low water use plants such as: Interior Live Oak, Western Redbud, Flannel Bush, and Ponderosa Pine. With the site facing south and mostly full sun conditions it was imperative for our team to develop ways to cool the site with trees both large and small, evergreen and deciduous. Our team has implemented a palette diverse in color, movement and structure that will make the site enjoyable year-round. Certain varietals demonstrated on this plan, such as MoonbeamCoreopsis, are non-native but very water-wise and tolerant of full-sun conditions. This particular cultivar thrives in hot locations and is used in substantial quantity in areas such as the North Auburn/Highway 49 K-Mart parking lot. The perennials chosen for this planting plan are all water wise and they will bloom spring through fall with the occasional winter bloom. Shrubs such as Flannel Bush, Rockrose, Bush Anemone and California Lilac will cycle through blooms, year-round. Grasses, flowering perennials & flowering, evergreen shrubs have been selected specifically for this project because of their unique hardiness, color &/or drought-tolerance. Native to the Mediterranean, trees like the Cork Oak are remarkable specimens and are often used throughout the Napa valley and into the foothill region. These trees ultimately grow up to 50-60wide. The users on the site will enjoy its great shade canopy for both pedestrian and vehicular shade, once established. Coupled with the Interior Live Oak and Non-fruiting Olives, the trees will soften the edges of the buildings, provide habitat quality for birds and mammals, and could potentially be seen as gathering spaces on hot summer days. WESTERN SLOPE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB LANDSCAPE NARRATIVE - June 2015

Project Overview

The proposed landscaping and its supporting irrigation system is a solution developed in the context of the current and unprecedented drought. The climate of the Sierra Foothills is changing and the landscape design for the Western Slope Boy’s and Girl’s Club represents that reality and the future availability of our water resources.

The Planting Plan

The Planting Plan illustrates a truly water-wise planting scheme: 28 of the 30 species represented are low-water use & 12 of the 30 species used are native to the region.

Certain varietals demonstrated on this plan, such as ‘Moonbeam’ Coreopsis, are non-native but very water-wise and tolerant of full-sun conditions.

These trees ultimately grow up to 50-60’ wide. The users on the site will enjoy its great shade canopy for both pedestrian and vehicular shade, once established. This area of Placerville is considered a Sunset Zone 7 (a warm zone 7) and plants have been chosen based upon their ability to thrive within the temperature fluctuations and potential extremes within this zone.

Irrigation Plan

The Irrigation Plan was devised as a tool for the contractor to use during the design/build phase; Their subcontractor will be responsible for carrying forth the necessary piping calculations and equipment selection onsite. It is our intention to see the irrigation system set up as a drip irrigation system divided into approximately 4 zones, with trees and shrubs separated out from smaller plants such as perennials, groundcover and ornamental grasses. The Irrigation Concept is a temporary 3-year drip system (for those areas irrigated) in order for the plants to properly establish. As the majority of the plants are water-wise and/or native plants they can adapt more readily to the full-sun, low water use conditions presented over time.
