We are still walking…Even though the Walk is over, we have not yet met our

Walk goal. To move the cutting-edge type 1 diabetes research forward, JDRF depends on us to raise the budget dollars that we project each year. Currently, we still have to raise $184,449 to do our part.

Here are some ways you can help:1. Take a look at your walk team. Did everyone register

and donate? If the answer is no, this is the perfect time to let those teammates know how much we still need their support. It is not too late to contribute and be part of our success.

2. Do you or any members of your team work for a company that participates in a matching gift program? This is a quick and easy way to double a walk donation and increase your team total. Go to www.matchinggift.com/jdrf to see if a company that you know participates in a matching gift program.

3. Mail in donations that you collected post-Walk to the JDRF office today! All donations should be sent to our new address: JDRF, 501 Martindale Street, Suite 670, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.

4. Host a fundraising event in your place of business. A simple Jeans Day or Pot Luck Lunch can provide a great additional boost to your team total.

5. Send your holiday cards out early to make a final request to all your friends, family and business contacts. The final day to submit donations to be counted for awards and incentive prizes is December 12, 2014.

Everyone needs a friend like Ethan! Each year Ethan Baer supports his friend Max Wolper by raising money for Max’s Crew.

This year Ethan raised $2,555 to help make Max’s Crew once again one of our top fundraising teams. Nothing says BFF more

than a buddy who helps you collect donations for a cure!

WHY are we still walking? Because the research is there to provide life-changing treatments

that will revolutionize how people with type 1 diabetes live. Encapsulation would allow someone to live for 18 months – 2 years without thinking about their diabetes. Human clinical trials are starting now! Smart Insulin would allow someone to take a shot or pill once a day and not think about their diabetes throughout the day. Several years ago these therapies were not even discussed and certainly weren’t real possibilities. But the research is costly, and our efforts need to continue until these treatments are in the homes of everyone with type 1 diabetes. If you would like to learn more about the research that is happening right now, please go to http://jdrf.org/research.

The research is planned, we just need the dollars to help close the funding gap!

The 23rd Annual Rainbow Gala will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh Hotel. Morgan O’Brien, President and CEO of Peoples Natural Gas will serve as the 2015 Honoree. “Peoples Natural Gas is a proud supporter of JDRF,” said Morgan O’Brien. “Type 1 diabetes affects so many of our families, friends, coworkers and neighbors. The research funded by JDRF is critical to improving the lives of those affected by type 1 diabetes and to finding a cure for this disease. I know JDRF won’t rest until a cure is found and I am proud to support their important work.” Joining forces with Mr. O’Brien are the 2015 Gala Corporate Chairs: Laura Shapira Karet, CEO of Giant Eagle, and Dan Onorato, Executive Vice President, Chief External Affairs & Communication Officer of Highmark Health.

The Rainbow Gala is an extraordinary event, bringing more than 700 prominent members of the Pittsburgh community together for an evening of fine dining, stellar entertainment and exciting auctions. The event has raised over $17 million toward funding research to prevent, treat and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes. You can help be a part of this memorable night by purchasing tickets, asking your company to sponsor the event or by supporting the auctions and Fund A Cure.

Highlights of the Rainbow Gala every year include the silent and live auctions. We are actively working to procure items for both auctions. If you are interested in serving on the committee and securing items for the auction or would like to donate to the auction, please contact Cathy Majka, Development Manager at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x7.

For sponsorship opportunities, please contact Jennifer Zgurich, Senior Development Manager at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x4.

Call for JDRF Chapter AmbassadorsDo you want to get more involved with JDRF but aren’t

sure how? Become a JDRF Chapter Ambassador. JDRF is constantly looking for people of all ages affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D), who can share their story and thank those who are helping us fund a cure.

An Ambassador is the “face” of JDRF Western PA Chapter in many ways. We need representatives to thank our event sponsors and donors throughout the year. For example, we need someone to send a thank you card to a Gala Sponsor or Corporate Walk Team Captain, to stop by and say “thanks” in local stores that are selling sneakers for JDRF, visit local

politicians, and to be a cheerleader for our local endurance event participants raising money as they log miles. All of these folks are helping us raise those much-needed dollars to fund research for a cure. It is important for all JDRF donors to know what a cure means to those affected by T1D and how much we appreciate their help in finding one. Please help us make sure that happens.

If you are interested in being a Chapter Ambassador, please contact Gillian McTiernan at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x2 for more information.

Last year, JDRF Western PA staff and our outstanding volunteers visited 17 different schools around Western PA and West Virginia. With the help of Kids Walk sponsor, Highmark, and more than 7,000 students, our Chapter raised $99,987.46 for T1D research!

Thank you to our top fundraising school, McMurray Elementary, for raising $10,995.52. You guys rock! Congratulations are also in order for the 2013-2014 top fundraising student, Mason Frye. Mason held a baseball tournament to raise money at Harrison Park Elementary and raised $2,229.20 for a cure. Thanks Mason!

Why should your school schedule a Kids Walk? Kathryn Talerico says:

“Since being diagnosed in 2nd grade, it’s always been hard to explain type 1 diabetes to my friends. They confuse it with type 2 and not getting enough exercise. During our Kids Walk, I was able to answer questions about the disease in front of 500 kids and teachers. I’m sure a lot of the kids - and teachers - learned something that day. And we were able to raise money for JDRF, too!” – Kathryn Talerico, age 12

Kids Walk – easy, fun and educational!

Your donations make a difference!JDRF-Funded Research Leads to Beta Cell ReplacementBy: Paul Hayes, JDRF National Director

Insulin therapy has long been the only method of treating type 1 diabetes (T1D), but a major breakthrough in producing replacement beta cells is bringing new hope that more effective, alternative treatments may be possible.

According to findings reported in the scientific journal Cell, JDRF-supported Harvard University researcher Doug Melton, Ph.D., has developed a method for converting human stem cells (both embryonic and non-embryonic types) into insulin-producing beta cells in the lab. The new method will significantly speed the conversion process. Previous lab methods have only been able to partially complete the conversion process. After reaching a certain point, the immature cells could only mature into fully functioning beta cells after implantation into animals, and the final conversion took months to occur.

Dr. Melton’s new method of driving the full conversion is an important advance towards potential large-scale, rapid production of human beta cells. Currently, sources of human beta cells are largely limited to cadaver donors. Once perfected, however, Dr. Melton’s conversion method could exponentially increase the availability of human beta cells, speeding delivery of novel T1D cell replacement therapies and accelerating basic research on a cure for the disease.

“JDRF is thrilled with this advancement toward large scale production of mature, functional human beta cells by Dr. Melton and his team,” said JDRF Chief Scientific Officer Richard A. Insel, MD. “This significant accomplishment has the potential to serve as a cell source for islet replacement in people with T1D when used in encapsulated cell-replacement products. It may also provide a resource for discovery of therapies that promote survival or regeneration of beta cells and development of screening biomarkers to monitor beta cell health and survival.”

JDRF recently awarded a new multi-million dollar research grant to Dr. Melton, for scaling up production of beta cells using his new method, to hopefully provide a virtually unlimited supply of human beta cells. Dr. Melton will also begin working with other members of the JDRF Encapsulation Consortium to conduct animal tests of experimental encapsulation products using this new source of beta cells.

Summer Golf ClassicThe Summer Golf Classic was held

on Monday, August 4 at the beautiful Ligonier Country Club. This annual event is always a summer highlight; golfers enjoy a day out on the links with lunch, dinner, raffles and an exciting live auction. Rich Myers,

Dave Maxwell and Ron Kurpiel did a phenomenal job as Chairs of the event; we couldn’t do it without them. We are very fortunate to have so many return golfers year after year! Between the chairs, golfers and numerous volunteers, this event continues to be a success, this year raising $91,526.

WV UpdateThe sky’s the limit

Jay Haapala is a 17 year old who doesn’t take no for an answer and refuses to let his age or a diabetes

diagnosis keep him from shooting for the sky. Living with type 1 diabetes for 11 years now, Jay acknowledges that “in those 11 years, 4,015 days have passed, I’ve pricked my fingers approximately 25,000 times and I’ve taken countless units of insulin. Diabetes sucks, I’m not going to lie.” However, Jay continues to push for his passion and proudly states that “I may have diabetes but it sure doesn’t have me!”

Jay’s dream is to become a commercial airline pilot. As part of the FAA guidelines this meant completing a mountain of paperwork and physicals to obtain a Third Class Medical Certificate. But the sky’s the limit for Jay. He is driven by determination and we are certain that one day he will have a career of flying those commercial airliners. You can read more about Jay and his journey on his blog: http://flyingoninsulin.weebly.com/blog

WV Diabetes SymposiumFamilies in WV enjoyed an

educational and fun-filled weekend in October at Camp Virgil Tate for the 3rd Annual Family Diabetes Symposium. With over 150 people attending, T1Ds of all ages had a great time connecting with one another, sharing information and experiences and many hugs. Thank you to keynote speaker Bill Parsons, member of JDRF’s International Board of Directors, Highmark for the funding grant and to Camp Kno Koma for making this a wonderful weekend experience possible.

There will be tons to do: activities for the kids, team photos, medical representatives, supply vendors and others with diabetes information. This day also provides a great opportunity to talk with other families. The walk begins at 2:00 pm. Go to www.walk.jdrf.org to register your team and start fundraising today!

The Western Pennsylvania Chapter recently hosted the 24th Annual Tee Up to Cure Diabetes golf outing at Valley Brook Country Club. On Monday, September 22 business leaders from Pittsburgh’s top corporations hit the links for JDRF. Tee Up continues to be a premier golf outing; this year the event raised $99,858. Special thanks goes to Tee Up Co-Chairs, Eric Rader and Kerry Pulaski, and the committee who enthusiastically focused on the success of the event. The event would not have been possible without the support of our co-chairs, committee, volunteers and the many companies and event partners that supported the outing.

National Diabetes Month

This year JDRF launched a coordinated, online and social media campaign during National Diabetes Awareness Month

(NDAM) in November. World Diabetes Day is November 14, but JDRF initiated efforts for ONE day where the world finds out what T1D really means. ONE day for everyone who has felt the impact of T1D to stand together. ONE day where T1D is the diabetes everyone talks about. That day was November ONE. The “no T1D” icon was shared on Facebook, Twitter, chapter websites, TypeOneNation.org, blogs, and email campaigns. On November 21-23, the centerfold of USA Today has an ad and an article written by JDRF International Board Member Nicole Johnson and the November issue of Family Circle has an article written by Dr. Aaron Kowalski, JDRF Vice President, Artificial Pancreas.

Taking your diabetes supplies into local venues

People living with type 1 diabetes are all too familiar with the resistance they sometimes encounter when bringing their diabetes supplies into public venues. Knowing the applicable policy ahead of time is helpful and can alleviate problems. Politely informing security guards that you or your child has type 1 diabetes and that it is medically necessary to bring supplies into the arena will also expedite the process.

Here is what you need to know for the following arenas:Heinz Field• Heinz Field prefers that all bags brought into the stadium

be clear (see-though) or up to 4.5" X 6.5". T1Ds who carry their diabetes supplies in either of these types of bags may enter through any gate and are not restricted to medical lanes.

• T1Ds who carry their diabetes supplies in non-clear bags or bags larger than 4.5" X 6.5" should enter the stadium using the medical lanes at each of the three main gates: People’s Gate A, Gate B, or Gate C. A security supervisor will inspect bags and provide a medical bag tag to indicate that the bag has been inspected.

• All bags are subject to search upon entry.PNC Park• Each guest is permitted to bring one bag, up to

16" X 16" X 8". • All bags are searched upon entry.Consol Energy Center and Petersen Events Center• Only small bags are allowed. • All bags are searched upon entry.

Apply for JDRF 2015 Children’s Congress NOW!

Applications to participate in JDRF 2015 Children’s Congress are now available at: http://cc.jdrf.org. The JDRF 2015 Children’s Congress, our ninth biennial event held for children aged 4-17 living with type 1 diabetes (T1D), will take place in Washington, D.C. from July 13-15, 2015.

Why should you apply for JDRF Children’s Congress 2015? In addition to explaining what it is like to live with T1D during meetings with Members of Congress and their staff, you’ll meet other children with T1D from across the country and hear from celebrity role models who are also living with T1D.

“Children’s Congress 2013 was an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience, I had so much fun meeting new people who understand life with type 1 diabetes, talking to members of Congress, and helping JDRF in their efforts to find a cure,” said 2013 Western PA Delegate, Caroline Simms.

If you are interested in applying, you must first complete an online application at http://cc.jdrf.org/apply by December 1, 2014. If you have any questions, please contact the JDRF Advocacy Team at [email protected].

Are you fluent in T1D? Please share your knowledge!

Do you remember how daunting it was when you or your loved one was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D)? Are you amazed by how much you have learned since that date of diagnosis? Please consider becoming a JDRF Mentor; to be a resource for newly diagnosed families by sharing your practical knowledge and your experience of living with T1D while introducing others to the benefits of engagement with JDRF.

“The JDRF Mentor Program is such a valuable resource for T1D families. From the newly diagnosed to those families who have been dealing with T1D for years, the Mentor Program is the perfect way to make new friendships, share ideas and find solutions and is the perfect reminder that we aren’t alone in this journey.”

– Diane Pesarsick, Westmoreland Mentor Chair

“I remember how overwhelmed I felt in the first few months of my son’s diagnosis. I knew nothing about diabetes and I wanted someone to talk to who could identify with the journey I was now on. The Mentor Program did just that; it gave me someone to talk to who could let me know that everything was going to be okay. At minimum, the Mentor Program lets new families know they are not alone; at most, it develops lifelong friendships.”

– Krysten Fingers, Pittsburgh Mentor Chair

If you or a family member has been living with T1D for at least one year, please consider becoming a mentor and supporting our newly diagnosed families. Contact Gillian McTiernan at [email protected] or 412-471-1414 x2 for more information.

Run for a Reasonwith Team JDRF in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon

Sunday, May 3, 2015Register: www.team.jdrf.org/pittsburghmarathon

By: Nancy GolembiewskiI have always been a ‘runner’ but

never had ambition to run further than a 5k. But when my three year old, Addi, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on November 5, 2013, and I was sitting in the hospital feeling hopeless, I learned about Team JDRF. I thought that this could be my way to meet other parents going through what I was, but I got so much more. Fundraising with JDRF helped me get through the first months of her diagnosis, because I was doing

something that would directly impact Addi’s life. Running the

half marathon on May 4, 2014 is one of the proudest moments of my life, and I smiled the whole time knowing that I was doing it for Addi – and that she knew I was doing it for her.

Last year, 60 Team JDRF runners raised $50,000 for the most promising research to better treat, cure and prevent type 1 diabetes. Compete in the full or half marathon, enter a relay team of five runners or run the 5K. Fundraising minimums apply but as a Team JDRF member, you will receive your bib for your race, a Team JDRF training shirt, a Team JDRF race singlet, an invitation to a pre-race spaghetti dinner, and the knowledge that you are directly impacting the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes by fundraising for a cure.

The Burlington ride was epic to say the least! My family and I drove to the beautiful White Mountains of Vermont and were pleased with the venue JDRF had selected. The very first contact with JDRF ride support was impressive. The volunteers at registration made sure we had everything we needed for the next three days. Meals and workshops were planned and each of the chapters was recognized as well as the amount of funds they raised.

On ride day, the staging area was abuzz with excitement. The DJ had everyone pumped up and ready to go in groups. At 7:00am, we were off! The ride was amazing! I rode with three other riders from Vermont. We held a pretty good pace the entire 100 miles! I started feeling fatigue the last 10-15 miles, but we pulled each other up to the end. When we finished, the crowd showed their support by cheering and getting us drinks and medical checks. Later that night, we had a celebration dinner where multiple individuals were given awards and recognition for their efforts throughout the ride. The JDRF Burlington ride was an unforgettable experience. As a first time rider, I wondered what previous riders meant when they said, “Once you do the ride, you’ll be hooked.” That is 100% true. The energy and enthusiasm was contagious. I plan on riding for JDRF every year until we turn Type One into Type NONE! By the way, I am looking for riders from the area to go to Vermont next year! You don’t need to be an experienced rider to participate because there are various distances to choose from for each Ride. It’s about the experience, the camaraderie, and the goal of everyone there to turn Type One into Type NONE.

The Western PA JDRF Chapter had three additional riders participating in the 2015 Ride to Cure Diabetes. Kaitlyn Allegretti rode the Death Valley Ride in October, and Andy Booth and Rich Kosuda rode the Nashville Ride in early November. A shout out also goes to Colleen Allegretti who is a chapter volunteer and rode in Death Valley for the Northeast Ohio Chapter.

Donate Now | Walk to Cure Diabetes Virtual WalkerJDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

JDRF’s mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

The Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s largest fundraiser. There are more than 200 Walks in the United States and dozens more take place internationally with more than 900,000 participating each year. The Walk draws people together in a healthy activity for a worthy cause, raising money to help find better treatments and a cure for type 1 diabetes. It’s fund for families and builds camaraderie among company employees.

Locally, our Walks have a goal of raising $1.2 million dollars. Even though the 2014 Walks are over, we still haven’t hit our goal. Additional donations in support of the Walk can still be made and would be greatly appreciated. Your support will ensure that JDRF continues to fund research to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and to develop new treatments that make life better for the millions of children and adults worldwide who are affected.
