FOUR PEOPLE arrested on drugs charges could be linked with bike thefts around Burnside High School and Canterbury University.
About 25 high-end bikes have been stolen from the school and university over the last two months.
Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said a search warrant was executed in Burnside on May 20 and four people were arrested.
They have appeared in court facing a number of alleged can-nabis and synthetic cannabis charges and were released on bail.
“There were other drugs in the house and we have sent them off for analysis,” Senior Sergeant McDaniel said.
It is alleged these four are directly linked with the thefts of bikes from the school and pos-sibly the university.
No charges have been laid about stolen equipment yet but Senior Sergeant McDaniel said the investigation continues.
“We have seized electronic equipment from the house to determine where the bikes are being sold,” he said.
Burnside High School prin-cipal Phil Holstein said it was a relief for the school community.
“We have increased our sur-
veillance around the bike bays to be better prepared in the future,” he said.
University liaison officer Sen-
ior Constable Ken Carter said no bike thefts had been reported to him in the last fortnight.
The university experienced a
spate of bike thefts.Engineering student Tim
Green managed to chase off three youths attempting to cut the lock to his mountain bike.
He spotted them from the window where he was studying.
Another student Charles More was not so lucky – his bike was stolen from in front of the Uni-versity of Canterbury Student Association during the day.

WELCOME TO your new look local paper. We try to jam as much news as possible in your paper, this week is no different.
Volunteers are often the unsung backbone of the community, whether sports coaches or even volunteers at the local com-munity hub. Reporter Fraser Walker-Pearce talks to Volunteer-ing Canterbury’s manager Ruth Gardner who has been at the helm for more than 20 years. She has retired but it doesn’t look like she will be putting her feet up anytime soon. Thank you Ruth for leading such an important organisation. You will be missed.
If there is a local issue bubbling away, get in touch. Or even send us a 300 word column, as we invite someone in the community to take up the challenge each week. Feel free to email me a column to [email protected].

A HEATED discussion was quelled at a city council meeting last week when a councillor was told to “eat a Snickers.”
During last week’s meeting, city councillor Jamie Gough joked that fellow councillor Glenn Livingstone should have a snack during passionate discussions over a deputation presented to the
city council.The popular American chocolate
bar’s motto is: ‘You’re not you when
you’re hungry.’ Perhaps Cr Gough felt Cr Livingstone needed a bite of chocolate to calm down.

In Brief
MUSIC JAM: Last week Riccarton High School’s ukulele orchestra performed a lunchtime concert at the Upper Riccarton Library. The performance was held for all ages to celebrate New Zealand Music Month.
Call to include park toiletsTHERE ARE no plans to have public toilets installed in Har-rington Park in spite of the nearby community urging they are needed.
Residents living in the Riccar-ton west area have been calling for a public toilet to be placed in Harrington Park due to the high usage of the park for community days.
About eight submissions representing several groups in the community were made to
the Annual Plan 2016/17 and Amended Long Term Plan 2015-25 earlier this month regarding the toilet.
Residents addressed their con-cerns there are no toilet facilities provided and the closest public toilet is either at Westfield Mall or The Warehouse on Blenheim Rd.
In the area of Riccarton west there are three linked reserves in-cluding Harrington Park, Paeroa Reserve and Shand Cres Reserve but there are no public toilets.
But the city council’s hands
are tied by the level of service agreement which does not allow for the development of toilets in neighbourhood parks.
The agreement is in the Annual Plan indicating how much the city council will do for neighbourhood parks.
City council’s head of parks Andrew Rutledge said there are no plans to install a toilet at this site.
But residents are saying there has been a large increase in population for the Riccarton West area.
According to the 2013 census by NZ Statistics, the population in Riccarton West had increased from 2780 to 3210 in the last 10 years.
“To have toilets on the location and site would be mind-blowing for everyone to be quite honest,” chairwoman of the Riccarton West Neighbourhood Group Sheree Wharewhiti said.
Ms Wharewhiti said having public toilets on site would be a huge relief as port-a-loo toilets are expensive to hire for their community days.

SMOKE ALARMSHousing New Zealand homes in Papanui have been fitted with new photoelectric smoke alarms. Since February, 633 homes have had the new alarms installed. When the smoke particles entering the chamber changes, the amount of light that reaches the sensor also changes. The alarm sounds when the smoke density reaches a preset level.
THEFTS FROM CARSAbout seven cars in the Cracroft area had belongings stolen from them or were broken into between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning last week. A number of items were taken, including wallets.

New Zealand Rugby League general manager for the southern zone Steve Martin talks about the popularity of league.
The extremely successful visit to Christchurch by the Penrith Panthers NRL side and the New Zealand Warriors shows what an appetite Cantabrians have for rugby league.
To sell out AMI Stadium, the former home of rugby league in Canterbury and the scene of many past historic encounters, was a superb feat.
The community was well served by the high level of engagement undertaken by the two teams in the time that they were in the city. A huge number of young people were able to interact with the stars of the game.
The programme, delivered to schools across the city, was very well
received and continued the theme of rugby league being ‘more than just a game’.
Sport can be a catalyst for many positive outcomes for communities and individuals alike. Rugby league has shown that it is a game that cares about its people and their health and well being.
The environment for delivery of opportunities to play the game has improved immensely with a variety of measures that have been undertaken.
Rugby league has fought to shrug off the negative tag which it has often been given. And with events such as the Panthers and Warriors game, the prospect of a new home for rugby league was created.
With the potential for a team from Canterbury being involved in an NRL competition, and the
chance for there to be a Rugby League World Cup fixture in Christchurch next year, the future has never looked brighter.
The challenge facing the sport is the same as that of all sports, finding volunteers prepared to take on the many key roles that are needed to run the game at club level and to coach and manage teams.
With participation numbers continuing to rise and interest high, Canterbury Rugby League is positioning itself to provide the best possible support to those wanting to be involved in the game.
Rugby league is truly ‘more than just a game’.

There is never a dull moment at McMaster & Heap vets and funnily enough the critical serious cases mostly show up on weekends, or 7pm at night. I’d arrived into work one Saturday to help out and Tinker was in our surgical area, having just been transferred
from the After Hours Clinic. He looked terrible ( his face had taken the full impact of a collision with a car) but he was on a fentanyl drip and his pain seemed well managed. Miraculously he had survived and his success story is due to not just our
surgical efforts that Saturday but also the events that took place by many people prior to us seeing him.
His accident happened Friday night and some great human being saw him on the road and immediately delivered him to the After Hours clinic, which incidentally saved his life. We are so fortunate to have an emergency centre open through the nights and weekends when other clinics have closed. The team there swiftly examined and stabilized Tinker and started him on pain medications, antibiotics and intravenous fluids. Then his owners were contacted as Tinker wore a collar with nametag attached. This means of identification (or a microchip) is so important because without an owners consent we can’t really treat a critically ill patient to save its life. He was monitored and cared for all night until he was dropped off to us Saturday morning.
Even though it was a weekend with less staff rostered on, I knew Tinker couldn’t wait until Monday for surgical repair. His lovely, worried owners wanted for us to do “everything” we could to ensure Tinker came home. That’s where our outstanding team need
to be greatly commended, because regardless if any of them had plans that night, they all, without me asking, stayed late to ensure the best possible care and attention was given to a critically ill patient.
Tinker was anaesthetized, his skull was radiographed and I repaired his mandibular jaw fracture with wire and his hard pelate injury. He had a massive gnash under his chin that required suturing and he had several broken teeth. A feeding tube was placed in his oesophagus to enable us and his owners to feed him post operatively. Cats with fractured jaws can take weeks to eat on their own. Steve was called in to assess his eyes as they were completely closed over and I wasn’t sure whether he had retinal injuries, lens or corneal damage. Luckily Steve felt there was no ocular damage, just a lot of bruising and facial swelling.
Tinker was managed intensively over the coming week, his days spent with our hospital nurses and nights at the After Hours. He needed everything done for him from feeding six times a day, loads of medications to be given, his face washed and he needed grooming as he couldn’t do this for
himself. His owners visited him daily and he really loved their visits. He was the perfect patient to treat – he was stoic, obliging and grateful.
Tinker was a FULL TEAM effort and I’m so pleased to report he’s home now, lounging on beds, walking around his section, able to groom himself and even eating a little on his own. Steve
and I couldn’t do the job we do without the dedicated, caring staff we have.
A fantastic outcome and even though Tinker looks a little facially different now,
his owners report they have their “old” friend back.

PARTS OF Avonhead Rd beside Christchurch International Airport will close tomorrow.
Avonhead Rd west and Grays Rd near Ron Guthrey Rd are affected.
The road closure is to allow freight aircraft to directly access the airport’s runways.
The road closures are so the airport’s air freight development and logistics precinct Dakota Park can extend.
The “proposed road align-ment” were indicated in a city council plan put in place in 2005.
In August the Western News reported some plane spotters were concerned they would no longer have access to view planes from Grays Rd.
A Christchurch International Airport spokeswoman said members of the public will be able to observe planes from an area next to the corner of Avon-head and Grays Rd.
She said the airport is also considering possible areas for the public to observe planes from in the future.
Tony McFarlin, a keen plane spotter, said while it is not an entire loss to have Grays Rd closed off, he would like to see
more designated areas set up for plane viewing.
“From a security point of view, this is what airports around the world are doing,” he said.
He said at Manchester Airport there is a designated area with a concorde plane on display and raised decks.
“You get unobstructed photos and the airport runs parallel...even Auckland has got one,” he said.
Mr McFarlin said there would have to be thousands of people interested in plane spotting in the city.
Russley, Avonhead and Me-morial Residents’ Association chairman Geoff Judge said he
had not heard any concerns about the road closure but imag-ined people enjoyed going there to watch planes.
“I think the biggest annoyance for people who love to watch planes is at the old airport you could actually go out onto a deck and watch the airplanes,” he said.
Up until April 2013, when the redeveloped integrated terminal building opened, the airport had an external viewing deck up on the first floor of the old terminal building.
Following the September 9/11 attacks, most airports around the world had external viewing decks closed off.

CLOSING: Parts of Avonhead Rd and Grays Rd will be closed tomorrow.
Roads closed for airport expansion In BriefCURLETTS RD TO CLOSECurletts Rd will be closed tonight and tomorrow night as concrete side panels are lifted onto the overhead bridge spans for the Magdala Place, Wigram Rd overpass. Cranes will be used for lifting the panels into place, and the road closure will ensure drivers are well clear of the site in case of accidental falls onto Curletts Rd. The job is expected to take a night with the second night a contingency night in case of bad weather. The road closure will be between 8.30pm and 6am each night.
CYCLE CRASHA man in his 20s was injured in a crash between a car and cyclist at the intersection of Memorial Ave and Grahams Rd last Friday. St John was alerted to the crash at 5.16pm, and took the man, who had moderate injuries, to Christchurch Hospital.
INFO SOUGHT ON LIGHTSThe Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board have asked city council traffic staff to provide them with a report about installing in right turn arrows at the Glandovey, Strowan Rds and Rossall, Heaton Sts intersection. It also asked if staff can be available to answer questions about the installation of the new lights.

How long have you been involved with Volunteering Canterbury for?
I’ve been involved with Volunteering Canterbury for 21 years.
And what have you achieved in that time?
They weren’t just my achieve-ments, I was leading a great team that led a whole group of volun-teers and encouraged volunteer-ing throughout Canterbury.
Sure. How many volunteers did you get into the community
in your time? Do you know the number?
Thousands in my time, I probably couldn’t tell you the exact number. After the earth-
quake there was a lot of informal volunteering, and it took time to become more formal again. By the end of my time there, we were having a couple hundred volun-
teers a month applying.Okay, so who is next in line
for your job?The organisation has decided
now to have two managers, one
that does marketing outreach, and she’s been there for four years, and there’s a new man that will be coming in too.
What was some of the work you got involved with because of the earthquake?
Well we had a lot to do with clearing liquefaction off the streets with the help of volun-teers, the Student Volunteer Army and the Farmy Army. We made sure those people that needed help got it.
How many people are in-volved in Volunteering Canter-bury?
There are only two paid work-ers full time, but there is another group of about 10 who help out voluntarily. They do store work, accounting, PR work, stores or expos, website, trust board, all kinds of things, whenever we needed something we knew where to find those people.
Wow, sounds like you’ve had some busy days?
It was always busy, always var-ied, and there was always some-thing different every day. It keeps you on your toes.
Did you still feel like that at the end of your 21 years?
Yes, absolutely, I still feel like that, I had just had enough of full time work, so now I’m able to do other things which is great.
Community volunteer’s workRuth Gardner worked as Volunteering Canterbury’s manager for more than 20 years until she retired last month. Fraser Walker-Pearce talks to her about voluntary work after the earthquakes, running the show at wedding ceremonies, and living with the town crier

Oh that’s good then. What do you do in your spare time now?
I still actually do a bit of volun-tary work, I chair the residents committee in the Avon Loop, and that’s with a lovely bunch of people too. At the moment we’re working hard to rebuild a local community centre. There’s seven on that committee, and others help around the place. I’ve been involved for quite a long time. But since the earthquake the need has become different for a lot of com-munities. We also have a commu-nity cottage that we maintain and rent out.
With Volunteering Canter-bury did your role change after the earthquake to more of an emergency recovery mode?
Yes it did, in fact we had to put some of our policies to the side after earthquake. Because there were urgent things that had to happen right away, and a lot of informal volunteering took place. It was also a bit difficult in terms of health and safety with people going around those dangerous chimneys.
Are you from Christchurch?I’ve been here for 30 years
and I was also brought up here, so I’ve spent more than half my life here, but I was born in Auckland. I went to St Albans Primary School, and then
back to Auckland when I was about 10, and lived there for 20 something years, but now I love Christchurch and I wouldn’t leave.
Oh that’s good to hear! What high school did you go to?
Epsom Grammar in Auckland. I don’t have a degree but I did feminist studies at Canterbury University and a bit of study at
the polytechnic. And I’m actually a celebrant too, with the certifi-cate and everything.
Wow, you’re qualified all over the show.
Well, when you’re in the volun-tary sector you never know what will come in handy, and what different skills are useful.
And now that you’ve retired from Volunteering Canterbury,
do you plan to do a bit more with your celebrant’s certificate?
Oh yes, absolutely. Now that I’m retired I’m hoping to do more celebrants work.
Do you know how many wed-dings you’ve done?
Oh, I really don’t know. I’d say about 100 weddings, but a lot fewer since the earthquakes. But I’m hoping now to have more
time to do more weddings. I’m also a keen blogger, I write about anything that’s going on around here, and anything to do with the central city. I’ve been doing that for 10 years, and I have more than 1000 followers, which has taken a long time. But that’s on realruth.wordpress.com if you wanted to have a look.
Very good, I definitely will. What are some other hobbies?
I enjoy my garden and I write poetry. I write mainly rhyming poetry, I joined a group of women poets, and I like to walk and relax with friends.
And are you married with kids?Yes, I’m married and two adult
daughters who both live in Eng-land. Both near London, one is a lawyer and one is an IT manager. They’ve done very well, yes.
And does your husband work still?
Yes, he does – he’s actually the town crier. It makes for some interesting conversations for sure. He’s originally from England, but he’s been doing that for about 26 years. He started five years before me, to the day. He’s very keen to keep doing that.
Where in the city are you based?
We’re in one of the remaining little old cottages in the Avon Loop now.

A LOCAL trust which acts as a problem solver for vulnerable, disadvantaged and struggling people around New Zealand said it is in urgent need of funding.
SigJaws Trust helps people in a variety of ways, from lobbying for retention of services, suggesting changes to legislation, finding work and housing and pro-moting innovations.
However, project man-ager Gary Watts (right), who founded SigJaws in 2001, said the trust had been struggling financially for some time and needed more funding to carry on.
The trust’s operating expenses were “conservatively” about $207,000 a year and while it had enough to carry on over the next six months, finding new funding was a big challenge.
“We have got over 200 clients now that we are dealing with on a day-to-day ba-sis and a lot of these people have slipped through other systems
big-time,” Mr Watts said. One of its recent projects has
included working with Can-terbury University to develop a robotic arm which would allow mobility-impaired drivers to fill up at petrol stations without leav-ing the car.
The trust had received funding from organisations including the
Ministry of Social Devel-opment, the Rotary Club of Christchurch and The Lion Foundation within the last year.
However, it had been unsuccessful in seeking funding from the Red
Cross, the Canterbury Commu-nity Trust and the city council.
“If our funding dries up it’s just impossible to carry on,” Mr Watts said.
SigJaws Trust board member Jamie Hoffman, who has cerebral palsy said Mr Watts had been pivotal in helping him find suit-able accommodation after the earthquakes.
“People just don’t realise how much good he does out there,” Mr Hoffman said.

Ms Pel was a long time member of the choir up until about six years ago when she first developed cancer.
When her house was damaged in the Septem-ber 2010 earthquake, she moved back to her country of birth, the Netherlands, for what was supposed to be six months. But the stay ended up becoming permanent.
In spite of surgery, the cancer had returned and Ms Pel was already planning her funeral in the Netherlands when she returned to Christchurch for a visit in December and January.
Choir member Judi Smitheram said choir members had met Ms Pel at a social gathering and sang together again.
“Dorien was wonderful at always bringing poetry to our gatherings and she had written a poem especially for us,” Ms Smitheram said.
It was during this visit that Ms Pel asked if they would record the song, which the choir had not performed in more than eight years.
The choir sourced a recording of the song from Australia’s Ra-dio National station to help them
go over it and get the pronuncia-tion right, as the words are in the Tetum language.
After recording it, they sent it to Ms Pel.
“We got a lovely note back from Dorien saying how much she appreciated it and she was very moved,” Ms Smitheram said.
Women in Harmony has about 20 members from around Christchurch.

SOME OF the city’s most promising ballet dancers put their best foot forward at the South Island Ballet Awards held at the Isaac Theatre Royal recently.
Ballet dancers from the Can-terbury Ballet and the Southern Ballet Theatre received numerous awards to help further their ballet training.
Southern Ballet dance student Jamie Hughes of Burnside came second in the senior ballet category.
He was awarded $2000 and offered the opportunity to train for a week at Queensland
Ballet School with former ballet dancer Li Cunxin.
The competition presented by The Christchurch Ballet Society and PW Dance & Sportswear providing scholarships for aspiring dancers looking to further their careers.
Ballet dancers travelled from Invercargill, Nelson and Marlborough to compete in the event.
It was aimed at dancers from the age of 12 to 19 years and was judged by established ballet dancers Anna Beretennikova, Peter Boyes and Pauline Tronson-Germon.

A DORMITORY housing Canterbury University students has been honoured in this year’s Canterbury Architecture Awards.
College House-Replacement Dining Hall and Kitchen designed by Wilkie+Bruce Reg-istered Architects Ltd was one of two winners in the heritage category.
The awards were announced at Hagley Oval pavilion last Thursday.
They were part of the peer-reviewed awards programme conducted by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.
The design by Wilkie + Bruce Registered Architects Ltd, was one of the two winners in the heritage category.
Canterbury Architecture Awards convener Dennis Chip-pindale led his jury through 40 shortlisted projects over eight “marathon” days of judging.
“Five years on from the quakes, these awards provide us with a way to survey the profession, to see how we are responding to the challenges,” Mr Chippindale said.
Impressed with the overall quality of work, Mr Chippindale said now is the time for greater aspiration to be applied to the form of the developing city.

CONTRACTOR parking permits will be trialled in Merivale.
The city council decided on Thursday it would run a one-year trial on a section of Holmwood Rd of resident-based parking permits for contractors where there is no off-street parking.
The permits were the idea of Merivale resident Dr Stuart Gowland. He lobbied the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, and said some contractors have vehicles too big to fit on some properties and need to park on the road.
City councillor Jamie Gough said the trial was a fantastic result.
“The reason we have asked for this is because the current system was complete-ly inadequate,” he said.
“The current system does not allow for weather dependant work or projects that run for longer than the predicted time frame.”
The way contractor permits will work is still being finalised by city council staff. However, Cr Gough said it will be a very straightforward process.
The contractor would verify themselves with the city council and be issued a per-mit for its vehicles.
The permit would display the registra-tion number of the vehicle to indicate to authorities that the vehicle is exempt from time restricted parking.
Dr Gowland is thrilled the trial is going ahead.
“It would have been crazy to try roll it out across the city,” he said.
“This way we can test the waters and see if it is good enough to make it policy.”
He said there is a similar system operated by the Devon County Council in the United Kingdom, where he got
the idea from. The city council will retain its current
permission-based system for the rest of the city.

Now that Cantabrians have had their first taste of winter, we’re turning our thoughts to keeping warm, and no-one combines style, personality and quality in knitwear than high-end label Silverdale. along with sister-company PJ Jeans for women, their outlet store hornby offers up to 70% discount off RRP on these NZ-designed brands - amazing value.
originally established during the Depression of the 1930s, Silverdale Knitwear is a proudly Kiwi-owned and operated family business which took root in Levin after world war II, where it remains to this day. The focus is still on providing quality pieces which are second-to-none for craftsmanship and value.
Their ranges include collections for men and women and reflect the history of the company with an eye to the future. The women’s wear collection – Nineteen//46 – is named after the year the company established itself in Levin and recognises a time when people were given back their optimism and individuality. Their garments are an interpretation of that spirit. They allow for freedom and luxury
and allow the wearer to show off their unique style. 100% merino for quality and 100% washable for convenience, the collection includes cardigans, dresses, sweaters and capes in a range of silhouettes and colours that are flattering and easy to wear yet highly stylish. The Silverdale Men’s and Black collections include cardigans, vests and sweaters in merino, lambswool, and pure wool and are hard-wearing with the emphasis on practicality and comfort. Designs are available in various colours such as plum, cocoa, denim, navy, black and charcoal – perfect for outdoors or for relaxing in front of the logburner at the end of the day. all are such superb quality that they will last for years to come.
PJ Jeans has its roots in the South Island but is now based in Levin where the lead development, design, and supply is carried out. The PJ Jeans brand is evolving seasonally as fashion and trends change. however, the product remains true to the revolutionary PJ Jeans comfort, flattering fit and superbly sourced fabrics. The pants come in a range of colours, fabrics and styles, designed with a “real” woman’s
body in mind. all PJ Jeans are designed and cut to complement our varied women’s shapes and sizes. The merger with Silverdale back in 2013 made sense – both companies put quality and style for their consumers as their top priority, and this synergy has led to an effective and

A HISTORIAN is preserving some of the fast disappearing heritage of one of the city’s original suburbs by creating scale models of buildings, maps and a book.
Spreydon resident Mike Bur-don has created about 20 models of Addington buildings, with the latest being the 152-year-old Enfield Villa in Burke St which is set to be demolished.
Mr Burdon has also created maps of Addington both before and after the earthquakes and has been working on compil-ing an extensive history of the suburb which he hopes will be published in book form.
He began the project four years ago, after being motivated by the ongoing demolition of buildings following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, much of which he saw as unnecessary.
“A lot of the places are being pulled down to make way for these new flats and it’s just capital gain – ‘to hell with his-tory, we’re here to make money’ – no consideration of what has happened in the past or restor-ing any of these buildings,” Mr Burdon said.
He was frustrated that Herit-age New Zealand had declined
to give some buildings heritage status due to alterations made to them over the years.
“I’ve been an artist all my life, it’s a natural gift to me and I thought ‘why don’t I go ahead and create something out of this which will last another 100 years?” Mr Burdon said.
“I would like to have some-where where I can put them on permanent display, like a museum, and charge people a donation to come and see it and
the money would go to charity organisations in the commu-nity.”
Since starting with St Mary’s Church, his other models have included the suburb’s other original three churches, the Woods Brothers’ Flour Mill in Wise St (including its former bowling green), the Addington Prison and the old Lincoln Rd railway station.
He is planning to do models of two more cottages, two more
shops and possibly the original school which was based on what is now the Addington School site.

FUNDING TO keep a security camera in St Albans will be provided by a local community board.
The Manches-ter St camera, brainchild of city councillor Ali Jones (right), was installed on April 4 to deter clients visiting sex work-ers in the residential area.
Now the three-week free trial is over, the Shirley-Papanui Community Board has agreed to fund the camera for another month.
It will cost $960 plus GST and will be funded from the board’s discretionary fund.
Cr Jones said poor weather contributed to the reduction of sex worker activity.
“We, as a board, want to see what the next four weeks hold,” she said.
“After the next four weeks, I hope to have completed my in-quiries regarding other possible funding streams.”
ATF loaned the camera for three weeks and set it up on the corner of the Manchester and Purchas Sts intersection.

Abell CAr rentals may have changed their name from Scotties, but clients can still count on the trusted locally owned, conscientious customer service of the old Scotties brand.
After 30 years in the business, Allan Scott still loves cars and helping his customers have a pleasurable rental experience.
let’s meet owner Allan of the newly rebranded Abell Car rentals:
How long have you been in business?I started in the rental car business in Gisborne, way back in 1987. Wow, almost 30 years, time flies when you’re having fun. My business was one of the original companies formed when the government de-regulated the rental car industry. I saw the need for great customer service for travel, repair and moving needs and I love cars, so it was easy to choose to start a rental car company.
Share a little of your backgroundI started trading as Scotties rent-A Car and moved to Christchurch to start up the new Scotties branch in 1995. With the great community support we received, plus getting involved in supporting local theatre and sports groups, we very quickly out grew our Addington premises.
In 2003 we purchased the well known
local rental company Abell rentals and moved into their large premises on blenheim rd. With their commercial fleet of furniture trucks, tipper trucks, utes, minibuses and courier vans, we added to our large fleet of new and backpacker cars which offered a larger selection to our customers.
With that acquisition Scotties (now Abell), then had the largest selection of rental vehicles available in Christchurch.
Two years ago we also acquired the boutique rental company MX5 rentals. We now have the largest selection of convertible roadsters in NZ. Car enthusiast from around the world, are arriving in NZ in droves to drive the best roads around the best country in the world. We are now the recognized experts in MX5 roadster rentals in NZ. In fact we are the first rental car company in the world to purchase the brand new generation 2016 ND model MX5 which is extremely popular.
Allan enjoys being actively involved in the community through various business organisations including Automobile Association Canterbury/ West Coast Councillor, rVA (rental Vehicle Association) as well as sponsoring local theatre and sports teams.
Tell us about your Customers. We have a mix of domestic and international customers. We have deliberately structured our staff to for cultural diversity to include all customers and make them feel warm and invited. This is a real benefit when dealing with tourists from different countries.
Why Abell’s?We are one of the only locally owned and operated rental companies left in Christchurch. We feel this offers value to our customers because we are local and we are involved in supporting our community. We support Showbiz who produce world class shows to capacity audiences at the Isaac royal Theatre. We support the repertory Theatre who produces fantastic plays at the elmwood Auditorium and we support Canterbury Netball and the Tactix team
Great customer service fortravel, repair & moving needs
amongst others.Do you have other Branches?
We have a branch in Auckland. This offers our customers the opportunity to do one way hires with cars and even with furniture trucks.
Safety is Key!To maintain our high standard of vehicle safety and reliability we have our own fully equipped and manned workshop. We also offer a 24 hour mechanical breakdown service just in case something goes wrong.
Check out Abell’s rental Cars at www.abell.co.nz and www.mx5rentals.com or call us on 03 348 2002, located at 189 blenheim road in riccarton. We would love to see you.

Wharenui Recreation Centre has had a Kiwiana-themed makeover thanks to the works of internationally-renowned street artist, Dcypher.
Dcypher, also known as Guy Ellis, returned to his hometown recently to brighten the centre on 73 Elizabeth St.
Based in Los Angeles, Dcypher was invited back by George Shaw, the director of Oi YOU!
Mr Shaw helped open the Spectrum Street Art Festival.
Dcypher’s local work in the city includes a Welcome to Christ Church mural at the Bootleg BBQ restaurant on Welles St.
The Wharenui Recreation Centre was closed in Febru-ary 2011 after sustaining earthquake damage.
The city council facility is being repaired and strength-ened and will be reopened at 100 per cent of the New Building Standard (NBS) on Friday 1 July 2016.
Before its closure due to quake damage, the centre was a popular location for basketball, exercise classes, badminton and martial arts.

Tips for untreated hearing loss
and medications can adversely affect our hearing. Unfortunately, hearing loss that occurs from such causes is permanent.
The good news is, even if you already have a little hearing loss, it’s never too late to preserve your hearing for the years ahead. The first thing you can do is protect your ears in noisy environments.
Hearing is a sense that many of us take for granted. Throughout our lives, we subject our ears to loud sounds–music, power tools, lawn mowers, air travel–without using ear protection. regrettably, this can cause hearing loss. also, the natural aging process generally results in hearing loss. even certain illnesses
also, avoid using cotton swabs to clean your ears. and, make it a priority to get a baseline hearing screening to see if hearing loss has already occurred.
if hearing loss is found during your hearing evaluation, it could be due to excess ear wax or infection. This type of hearing loss is reversible. if hearing loss stems from chronic exposure to loud noise, aging, or certain illnesses and medications, hearing aids are the best way to preserve your good hearing.
The great news about today’s hearing aids is how small and easy to wear they are. Modern digital hearing aids use super-tiny microprocessor technology–making them virtually invisible when worn. Hearing aids can help almost all degrees of hearing loss–from a little to a lot. and, by stimulating your brain with sound that might not otherwise reach it, hearing aids help keep your brain active, which lowers your risk for cognitive diseases, such as dementia.
if you suspect you may have hearing loss, don’t ignore it. neglecting a hearing loss can have a snowball effect–making it grow bigger, faster than necessary.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Here are 10 ways you can limit hearing damage and preserve good hearing:
1. Understand the sound levels of the noises in your environment.
2. Learn about proper ear protection. There are many kinds on the market today, ranging from custom ear molds to foam plugs and more.
3. Put physical distance between you and loud noise when it is present. if possible, stand at an angle from the noise, not directly in front of it.
4. Take breaks when you are exposed to noise.
5. When listening to music through headphones or earbuds, keep the volume low-to-medium.
6. Know the signs of hearing loss, and measure yourself against them.
7. schedule a baseline hearing evaluation. Hearing loss is on the rise among Baby Boomers and young people. it’s never too early to get your hearing checked, but don’t wait past age 50.
8. Have your hearing evaluated by a professional licensed by your state.
9. if you have hearing loss caused by a reversible condition, take steps to correct it.
10. if any permanent hearing loss is diagnosed, choose hearing aids to slow it down, and preserve good hearing.
it’s never too early to get your hearing checked, but don’t wait past age 50.

But it is time to make a change and leave this spacious happy home of many years. You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity in the
boutique subdivision of Broken Run. The cul-de-sac location is desirably tranquil, and this immaculately presented home will be a delight to view.
Step into the entrance way and then onto the large well-appointed kitchen with quality Smeg appliances and large oven. The dining and family room are very spacious and have vaulted ceilings. The separate formal lounge with a cosy gas fire and family room have bifold doors that open onto the manicured garden, a wonderful prospect for summer entertaining. The master bedroom also opens as well to the garden - perhaps time for a coffee and croissant in the morning before the day begins? The ensuite is unusually large, a rare find in modern homes, and the family bathroom certainly does not lack in size as well. Two further double bedrooms and a large single will safely house the family and guests.
The home is double glazed, fully insulated, has two heat pumps, a gas fire and under floor heating in the tiled kitchen and bathrooms.
A larger than normal double garage with trailer door to the backyard completes the deal in this very spacious home.
Don’t delay; this lovely home must be sold on or before auction day to let my vendors move on to the next stage of their life.
Open Home dates: Saturdays and Sundays 2.30pm to 3pm until auction, or to arrange a private viewing of this property call Debbie Pettigrew now on 337 1316 or 027 777 0411 or Malcolm Parker on 027 220 7843 from Harcourts Grenadier Beckenham (Licensed Agent REAA 2008).
