Thanks to Pat and David Bussard for arranging the annual January meet at Azelia Museum/Park. A nice casual morning had by all. Thanks to Alan Jeffree for scribing some notes about the day. We do have a fairly active couple of months coming up with breakfasts, coffee runs, car shows and swap meets. However, heading into the second month of 2020, we are still looking for some volunteers to put together runs for later in the year. Please have a think about it and if able, drop a note to Ian Paisley and let him know you have a run you would like to organise. Hope to see you at our next meet on the 23rd February at Sandy Beach Reserve in Bassendean. Drive Safe Dean

SECRETARY COMMENTS
I’m sorry I missed the January meet at Azelia Ley Museum. It’s a lovely spot and one of my favourite
gatherings of the year. A celebration for our 50th Wedding Anniversary had been planned for the
weekend prior to the meet but when our son, who lives overseas, came to Perth on business and was
here on 12 January, all plans changed to coincide with his visit.
Anyway, I mentioned in my previous Secretary’s Comment that alterations would need to be made to
renewal forms for next year and, subsequently, it was reported to me that during informal discussions
at the January meet many negative comments had been made about the changes that had been
made to the format of club membership since the adoption of the Rules of Association. No doubt the
matter will be discussed at the upcoming committee meeting with members’ concerns being taken
into account.

Are you getting unwanted email from MARC WA ? If so, just let me know and I will remove you from
our email lists. (Without any other knowledge, I have to assume that each member that has provided
a separate email address wants to get correspondence (newsletters, important notices etc) from
MARC WA. However if that is not the case, it is no trouble at all to remove your email address from
the email lists.)

RECIPE CORNER
HIT ‘N’ RUN Traybaked CHICKEN
Everyone needs a Hit ‘N’ Run recipe like this – It’s the kind of fallback meal you can enjoy when prep
time isn’t on your side. It’s simply a case of putting together a combination of ingredients that really
love each other, then just tearing, mixing, marinating and baking. Its super quick to prepare, and
you’re letting the oven do all the work.
Ingredients
4 large ripe tomatoes 2 red onions
1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper
6 skinless, boneless chicken thighs 4 cloves of garlic
½ a bunch of fresh thyme (15g) 1 teaspn smoked paprika
2 tblspn olive oil 2 tblspn balsamic vinegar
Method
Preheat oven to 180c/350f/gas 4.
Quarter the tomatoes & place them in a large baking dish or roasting tray (roughly 25cm x 30cm).
Peel the onions and cut into large wedges, then deseed and roughly chop the peppers.
Add all these to the tray along with the chicken thighs.
Squash the unpeeled garlic cloves with the back of your knife and add to the tray, then pick over the
thyme leaves and sprinkle over the paprika.
Add the oil, balsamic and a good pinch of salt and pepper.
Toss everything together really well to coat, then spread across the tray, making sure the chicken isn’t
covered by the vegetables.
Roast for around 1 hour, or until the chicken is golden and cooked through, turning and basting it a
couple of times during cooking with the juices from the tray.
Serve the traybake with a lovely green salad on the side.
You could also buddy it up with a little rice, polenta or loaf of crusty bread to mop up the juices

CMC DELEGATE REPORT
There was no CMC meeting in January. However, it appears things are happening behind the scenes.
The Sunday Times of the 19 January reported that the Dept. of Transport is to introduce a new
concession class to enable older vehicles to be registered at a reduced fee of around $170.
What effect does this have on our 404 concession vehicles?? The answer is nothing - at this stage.
My erstwhile watchdog, John Moorehead, reported the article to me (as I don’t subscribe to the ST)
and then took himself off to the VCC meeting held on the 23 Jan. Dave Reid (who is on the mend
after his fall) and others reported that this change is aimed at the hot rod and other modified vehicle
owners, who have been pushing for a reduction in fees for their vehicles. It in no way interferes with
404 concession vehicles.
This new class of concession vehicles may have some different conditions applying to their vehicles,
including annual inspections, along with some similar 404 conditions, e.g. restricted use to club
events, etc. The fine tuning for this is still underway. There is a meeting to be held between the CMC
and the Dept. hopefully sometime soon, to discuss the issues with this new concession and
confirming that it doesn’t impact on 404 concessions.
The next meeting of the CMC on the 17th February, 2020 will hopefully bring an update on this
subject, presuming the above meeting has been held by then. It might even make for an interesting
meeting!!
STOP PRESS! News just in….
“Classic Cars” – A message from Geoff Moor, President, Council of Motoring Clubs of WA (Inc)
There is a lot of conjecture happening at the moment about the recent announcement from the Minister for Transport regarding the availability of a concession on licence fees for modified “classic” vehicles. The Council of Motoring Clubs, as well as the staff within the Department of Transport, are awaiting more information.
In order to gain correct information, the CMCWA has already arranged to meet with the Minister to ensure that the benefits of Code 404 licencing under which our vehicles can obtain concessional licencing are retained and are not affected or altered due to the new system. It is our understanding that the current arrangements are not affected and that the announcement relates to a separate system which does not affect the Code 404 process at all. Car clubs and individuals are asked not to make separate approaches to the Minister or the Dept of Transport as this would only confuse the issue. Please allow the bodies that represent you to meet with the Minister and his advisers with a consolidated voice rather making diverse approaches on behalf of a particular individual or organisation. The moment we receive informed information we will advise Clubs. It is important to the continued good relationship that the CMC has with government regarding Code 404 licencing that the above is allowed to process and that it is not jeopardised by off-the-cuff remarks or uninformed comment on the matter by classic motoring enthusiasts through social media or elsewhere.

JANUARY MANNING PARK RUN (1)
12 Jan 2020 Azelia Ley Museum, Manning Park, Spearwood
On Thursday January 9th as I drove home from golf, I saw huge banks of smoke in the direction of our home in Baldivis. On arriving home safely, I checked the FESA (Fire and Emergency) website to see that there was a big fire to the east of us. Easterly winds were in force, so we watched it carefully.
On Friday January 10th we checked the FESA website to learn that that fire continued to be a problem, but there were also bushfires close to the golf course (David was to play on Saturday) AND south of Manning Park in Spearwood with lots of smoke and some road closures. No panic – just keep watching.
On Saturday morning January 11th, the Baldivis fire was contained but not controlled, the golf course area was at the same level and not likely to impact on David’s golf, and the Spearwood fire was still a worry. David phoned President Dean to let him know we were watching things and would be in touch if changes to our plan for the Model A Restorers Club monthly event were needed.
In the afternoon, things had quieted down in all areas, and by Sunday morning all fires were contained and controlled, so it was all systems GO.
The gate was open at the Azelia Ley Museum and club members and cars dribbled in over the morning. It was a smaller crowd than usual, with about a dozen Model A’s, Blewett’s 1932 Roadster, Moorehead’s FB Holden, Hall’s Tesla and a few moderns enjoying shady parking.
Secretary Kathleen was unable to attend, and President Dean was on crutches with plans to stay only a short time,
so no formal meeting was held. Instead, we chatted lots, then were called to order by President Dean for a casual discussion of club matters. Vice President Alan took notes of items discussed but no motions were moved. Treasurer Anne was present and prepared, so the raffle went ahead as usual.
Wyalkatchem members Darrell and Cerena Stratford were welcomed and their 1928 Roadster (purchased from Ben Fowler, and restored by Bill Cowlin) was inspected by the men. It was nice to see Barry and Jason Fowler in attendance.
The museum was not open in the morning but the attendants arrived just after we finished our lunches. Several members hiked up to the house for a look.
It was a lovely day, not too hot, with a gentle breeze to keep us comfortable. Because the group was fairly small we did not need to move around to escape from the sun as in past events at this location. Or perhaps the trees have just grown much bigger over the years and now provide much better shade.

JANUARY MANNING PARK RUN (2)
Azelia Museum/Park Sunday 12th January 2020
Twenty plus Club Members met for our usual get-together at Azelia Park. During the week prior, Kathleen
phoned to let us know she was unavailable for the meeting and I volunteered to fill in for her. A phone
conversation followed with our President Dean (who was laid up with a back problem) so between us we
decided no meeting but to continue with the usual get together. As it happened Dean was given a different
medication which enabled him to make the gathering supported by crutches.
The members gathered under the usual shady trees, and after morning tea there was no formal meeting, but our
President opened up a discussion session with members present.
Firstly it was to thank Pat and David Bussard for once again organising the booking at the park and the prizes for
our usual raffle.
We then welcomed Darrel and Cerena Stratford, new
members who purchased a 1928 Model A Roadster
from Ben Fowler after coming to Azelia Park and
meeting us last year. They trailered their Roadster
from Wyalkatchem to Perth and drove it to the
gathering from their accommodation. Great to have
new enthusiastic members!
Edith let members know that the annual Hubley night
this year (at our home) is on Saturday 21st March. All
welcome from 4.30pm. Bring your meat and drinks
and a chair, and the rest is provided. You don’t have
to own a Hubley - just come along and enjoy the
fellowship.
Events: The Brookton old time motor show is a goer and Peter Sartori volunteered to coordinate. Names to
Peter ASAP
Christmas Lunch: Edith asked for feedback on the December lunch at the Bridgeleigh. All present thought it was
a perfect venue and a great meal. For next year, Edith suggested it would be nice to have Christmas carols
playing quietly before and during the meal. She also thought the tables could have been closer together so you
could chat across tables. Dean suggested that each table have two empty chairs opposite each other so you
could visit a different table to have a chat before and during the meal breaks. At the next meeting Edith will
confirm a date for 2020 and ask for a deposit to make a booking. Edith would also like to compliment Frank for
his Christmas cake.
Our Individual membership forms concept was raised by “yours truly” (AJ). I mentioned the concept is all wrong
and we should consider going back to family memberships and a single forms. There was general agreement
and this topic will be raised at our next Committee Meeting to come up with changes to put to a general
meeting. John Moorehead made the comment that we would be the only car club in Australia with this split
system and he presented several copies of other clubs membership forms for the Committee to consider.
Our next Coffee Run: Jean Misko is to organise, and Kathleen can let members know as soon as decisions have
been made.

BROOKTON OLD TIME MOTOR SHOW
March 28, 2020 The Brookton show is on again. It was agreed at the Manning Park Run in January that we would
attend as a club. The theme of the show is “Memories of America” which fits in well with our old cars.
I have seven members who indicated they would like to come. I am planning to do a group booking,
so can everyone (including those who held their hand up at Manning Park) confirm back to me that
you are attending - and please let me know what type of car you are bringing, ie Model A, Holden, V8
Ford etc.
PLEASE CONFIRM TO ME NO LATER THAN THE 16TH OF MARCH IF YOU ARE COMING, so I can do a
group booking and confirm numbers to the organisers.

EX-MEMBER JIM WILLIAMS
Retired Model A Club member and Restorer who many members will remember!
Jim and wife Nina were members of our Club in the early years and seldom missed a meeting,
country run or a National meet. Nina passed 4 or 5 years ago. Jim still calls our son Darren, when
he has a TV problem.
This week he needed his TV picture brightness changing, so Darren and I visited his retirement
village in his Model A Woodie, that was Jim’s last restoration. Jim is 95 years old, still mobile and
lives by himself, still doing jigsaws and talks about our club with enthusiasm. He still has a can of
beer at 4.30pm each day.
Some background for newer members on Jim’s restorations: Once he retired, Jim worked with
‘passed’ member, Bill Spencer who was Mister Model A in the day! Bill had a huge collection of
Model A bits and vehicles. Jim was the ‘hands on’ person who did the work behind the scene.
He didn’t do serious mechanicals, painting or panelling but everything else. In payment, Jim
restored two vehicles for himself from what Jim called, “Bill’s Aladdin’s cave”. Here are some
photos of Jim’s projects done with Bill Spencer.
Darren and Germaine bought the Woodie in 1998
Restored by Jim, sold to Jack Berkshire, and now
owned by Jeff and Teresa Blackman
Now with: Left: Wes Hartley, Centre: Evan Gobby,
Right: Bailup Ford Farm. All originally sold at Bill Spencer’s
auction (10th Nov 1990) all with a few owners in between !

121,000 MILES AND AS GOOD AS NEW
I have a new contact for members who may need auto electrical repairs! Kevin Milligan (retired Auto Electrician) Member of VCC of WA Bassendean 0431 183 273
The Bee Rubber Corporation of Ohio purchased one of the first new Model A Ford cars
produced and started a test run finishing with 121,000 miles.
During the whole run they did not experience a moment's trouble. The original valves in the
car had never been ground or the carbon removed.
It was not found necessary to adjust the timing since it rolled off the production line during
the whole 121,000 miles test run; the total cost for repairs was 29 dollars.
This remarkable performance is only possible with a New Ford and is lasting proof of the in-
built qualities that are not seen by some car buyers.
If you are buying a car keep this in mind that you cannot buy a better riding car, and a car
with less depreciation than the New Ford. It will outperform any other car on the road.
Chase one with your thousand pounder and see.

COMINGS & GOINGS
Nathan Roberts has purchased Mike Le Roy’s 1929 Phaeton from Waroona (thanks to a
tip-off from Horace). Nathan must have “had a feeling” about the car because they just
happened to be in Dean’s car with a car trailer behind when they went to inspect it. It
has been in a shed for a good few years, but Nathan expects to have it on the road soon
with just some minor maintenance.

TIP OF THE MONTH
When installing the radiator, it is very hard to hold the bolts in the hole above the spring while
you fit the rubber pad and drop the radiator in place.
I cut new pads out of some insertion rubber the same size as the original. I then punch a slightly
undersized hole for the bolt in the rubber. The bolt can the put through the hole and pushed
through the rubber. The pad will hold the bolts in position while you fit the radiator.

Hello all Attached is a link to this year's Classic Car Show registration system. Rather than print and distribute paper passes, vehicle exhibitors are asked to register online. They will need to select their club, provide their name, address and email and 'Book.' They will then receive a registration email, which will be followed later by an admission pass, colour coded to the appropriate gate. The pass can be printed or saved to a smart phone. Apart from reducing manual handling, postage, collection and distribution, we will also be able to distribute last minute instructions to every individual exhibitor, rather than having to pass instructions through the club organizers. Hopefully this will make the bump in smoother on the day. It will also give us more accurate numbers about attendance. Please forward this link to your attending club members: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=583160& and request they register to get their pass. If you have members who do not have email, club coordinators may register on their behalf. You can distribute their passes at your club meetings or however best works for you. Thank you Paul Markham
