And after this Saturday’s exhibition, North Dakota gets back in action Jan. 11-12 in a pair of league games at Wisconsin. The WCHA standings show that two-time defending national champion Minnesota (19-1-0, 13-1-0 WCHA, 39 points) goes into the holiday season break with the league lead and a six-point advantage over Wisconsin. The Badgers (14-2-2, 10-2-2-1 WCHA, 33 points) are in the midst of a nation’s best, 14-game unbeaten streak and on the Gophers’ heels while third place North Dakota (12-4-2, 9-3-2-1 WCHA, 30 points) is just three points back of the UW. North Dakota is four points ahead of fourth place Minnesota Duluth (9-8-3, 7-6-3-2 WCHA, 26 points), which has played two more games than the three teams in front of them. There is currently a 12-point separation between the first and second divisions of the league with Bemidji State (7-9-2, 4-7-1-1 WCHA, 14 points) in fifth place, five points ahead of both St. Cloud State (3-14-3, 2-10-2-1 WCHA, 9 points) and Minnesota State (6-12-0, 3-11-0 WCHA, 9 points). Ohio State (5-11-2, 2-10-2, WCHA 8 points) is in eighth place. Bemidji State has two games in hand on six teams in the league and has played four fewer games than UMD. In the final WCHA games before the break last weekend (Dec. 13-14), North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth both recorded road sweeps. At St. Cloud, Minnesota Duluth scored a pair of 2-1 victories over the host Huskies. Jamie Kenyon had both goals in the series opener on Friday. She also had a goal in the series finale Saturday and Jenna McParland got the game-winner with :14 seconds left in regulation. Hannah Bramm had four assist in the series and goaltender Kayla Black recorded both wins for the Bulldogs, who came into the series winless in their previous five games. Molli Mott had both goals for SCSU on the weekend, including an extra-attacker, power-play tally at 19:08 of the third period in the series opener. At Mankato last weekend, visiting North Dakota gained 5-2 and 2-1 wins over Minnesota State and moved within three points of second place Wisconsin. UND received scoring from five players in the first game, with Meghan Dufault recording a three-point outing. Susanna Tapani scored twice on Saturday as North Dakota completed the sweep despite 43 saves from Mavericks’ netminder Danielle Butters. UND outshot Minnesota State, 89-39, in the series.

With a .722 winning percentage, North Dakota is enjoying its best winning percentage through the first half of the season. The previous record for the team’s best record through the first half was set in 2011-12 when the team posted a 12-6-1 (.650) record before heading into winter break. NH; 2017 – Family Arena, St. Charles, MO; 2018 – Ridder Arena, Minneapolis, MN. Ridder Arena, whose capacity is 3,400 fans, previously hosted the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four in 2010 and 2013. The arena was the first facility dedicated solely to college women’s ice hockey. Ridder Arena also has served as the site for eight WCHA conference championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013). The 2014 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four will be hosted by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center, March 21-23, 2014.

Minnesota’s NCAA-Record Winning Streak Reached 62 Straight GamesCoach Brad Frost’s Minnesota Golden Gophers stretched their NCAA Division 1 hockey record winning streak to 62 games before falling by a single goal – 3-2 – to North Dakota on November 17. The record winning streak, which included back-to-back NCAA Women’s Frozen Four championships, dated back to Feb. 17, 2012, when the Gophers were upended 2-1 (ot) at home against North Dakota. The streak included the last eight games of 2011-12, all 41 games in 2012-13 and 13 more to launch the 2013-14 campaign. The Gophers’ also compiled a record 39-game WCHA winning streak before being upended last Sunday, with their last previous conference defeat occurring Feb. 19, 2011 when they fell 5-3 at UND in the regular season finale. “For everybody who has been a part of it, it’s been a really special thing,” said Frost of the winning streak. “I think they helped grow the game of women’s hockey here in Minnesota and nation-wide, and that’s a huge testament to them. There was a lot of pressure, a lot of media attention and a lot of excitement every time we stepped on the ice, which was great, but it’s over, and we’re happy to have been a part of it.” Minnesota’s 62-game winning streak toppled the previous Div. 1 women’s hockey winning streak of 21 games set by Harvard and the Div. 1 women’s unbeaten streak of 32 games set twice by Wisconsin. It also topped the Div. 1 men’s hockey winning streak of 30 games held jointly by Rensselaer and Cornell and men’s hockey unbeaten streak of 38 straight games set by Rensselaer.

Lamoureux Family Remains All-In for Hockeyby Justin A. Rice – Special to USAHockey.comThe cavalry of hockey players surrounding the Lamoureux family’s Thanksgiving table in Grand Forks, N.D. was smaller than usual this year. And that’s not just because twin sisters Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux, who exhausted their eligibility at the University of North Dakota last year, brought most of the school’s men’s and women’s hockey players to the table with them during their college days. In fact, the table was also missing Jocelyn, who along with Monique is one of 23 women competing for 21 spots on Team USA for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. The sisters were forwards for Team USA’s squad that won silver at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. “We usually have big groups,” Monique said of Thanksgiving. “This year we only had 10 or 12 people. So it was a pretty small group of people for our family.” The family of eight that was profiled in Sports Illustrated almost four years ago for sending all six siblings to play college hockey was also missing some of its own members on Turkey Day, including Jocelyn, who was overseas to surprise her fiancé, Brent Davidson, a former UND hockey player who now plays for Valpellice in Italy’s top division. After flying seven and a half hours to Torino, Italy, Jocelyn was dropped off at the restaurant where Davidson’s team eats lunch every day. “I got there five minutes before him and there were a couple of teammates there sitting down at a table,” she said. “I wanted to sneak up behind him, but my back was to him when he walked in. He thought I was another girlfriend or wife. … I turned around and made eye contact and he literally stopped dead in his tracks and did a triple take. First thing he said is, ‘How did you get here?’ I was smart and said, ‘I walked.’ “It was the first Thanksgiving I’ve been away from home, but I really wanted to see Brent since I won’t see him at Christmas. I missed being home, but I liked spending time with my fiancé.” Jocelyn also got to see her brother, Jean-Philippe, and his wife. Jean-Philippe plays for EC VSV of the Austrian Hockey League and traveled about three hours to meet his sister and watch her fiancé play a game in the Coppa Italia tournament. After a few days in Italy, Jocelyn took a nine-hour flight back to Boston to resume training camp in Bedford, Mass. with Team USA. “I knew that it was going to be tough traveling, and I was going to be tired,” she said. “I tried to get as much sleep as possible on the plane.” Aside from trying to make the Olympic Winter Games, her whirl-wind trip to Italy wasn’t even the most stressful part of this fall for Jocelyn. Planning her June 20, 2014 wedding, which fittingly will be at UND’s hockey venue (Ralph Engelstad Arena), wasn’t the most stressful part either. Instead, Jocelyn said the most stressful part of this fall was finishing her 61-page master’s thesis in kinesiology for her UND grad program. But after nine months, she recently completed her thesis on whether or not it is advantageous for young girls to play youth hockey with boys. She surveyed all of her U.S. teammates for the project.

By comparison, Jocelyn said she picked a wedding dress in about one hour during a visit to at a bridal shop in July. “That was actually more stressful,” she said of her thesis. “We got engaged in May, so I had a couple months in the summer; I got all big things planned. … I have a few things I need to do [for the wedding], but that can all wait till March. I’m not going to get stressed out about stuff with the wedding.” Jocelyn has a few other things to do before then, like making the U.S. Olympic Team. Later this month, the team will make the final two cuts that will determine the 21-player roster that will travel to the Winter Games in February. That roster will be announced during the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1. And for the twins, the only thing better than making the Olympic Team would be to make it together for the second straight time. “To be able to do it a second time would be something special for us. Hopefully it works out that way,” Monique said. “In an Olympic year it’s so much different than college, where you have that added stress of knowing some of your teammates are not going to be there. That stress can be difficult to deal with at some points in the season. It’s just something you have to handle as an individual. In the end it makes us better teammates and players. You definitely learn to handle things as a player.” Luckily for the twins, they never had to do anything as an individ-ual on the ice, always having the other one to motivate them. “We have built in accountability,” Monique said. “If she’s maybe not feeling it one day or I’m not feeling it another day, we’ll both get on each other and say, ‘We have to get going.’ It’s basically like having a training partner 24/7. That’s how it’s always been.” And while some players might have trouble motivating themselves to do individual workouts during the holiday breaks, that’s never an issue with the twins, as their training partners multiply by four other siblings when they are home for the holidays. Usually when they are all home, the family gets up early for a morning skate together at Ralph Engelstad Arena. And this year will be especially easy for the twins to get home for Christmas as Team USA plays Canada at UND on Dec. 20, just before the team goes on Christmas break. The game will be the first of four games between Team USA and Canada that NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports Network will air before the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. “We could walk from the hotel to our parents’ if we wanted,” Monique said, while also noting that they are excited to play in front of friends and family. “My parents don’t get to watch us play a lot of hockey and obviously going to the University of North Dakota and playing for the Fighting Sioux, it will be like our last game at the Ralph. It will be bitter sweet for us. There’s so much pride.” Jocelyn said it would also be special to know they might spark an interest in hockey in youngsters from their hometown. She said they were in first or second grade when they watched the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, the first year women’s hockey was in the Olympics. “It’s pretty cool when you’re that young seeing competition like that,” Jocelyn said. “That was fun for us, that’s one thing I remem-ber growing up and watching. We believe we raised the caliber of hockey at the University of North Dakota, and we’re exited to show them the best caliber of hockey in the world. Hopefully we’ll get a good turnout and show them what women’s hockey is all about at the elite level. “Something like that can inspire young girls to go out and play. That means the world to us.”

BeaversBemidji State University• The Bemidji State Beavers (7-9-2, 4-7-1-1 WCHA, 14 points) are idle from play until a Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 4-5 Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at Minnesota State.• The Beavers most recently traveled to No. 2-ranked Wisconsin for a WCHA series Dec. 6 & 8. BSU rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2, but the Badgers scored five unanswered goals to earn a 7-2 victory in game one. On that Sunday, Wisconsin scored a pair of goals in the first and third period to beat the Beavers, 5-0.• Bemidji State dropped to 2-7-1 versus teams that were ranked or receiving votes in national polls at the time it played them.• It was the first time Bemidji State was swept since Nov. 1-2 against North Dakota. Wisconsin also snapped BSU’s streak of four consecutive conference series with points.• Kaitlyn Tougas scored a goal in the Dec. 6 loss at Wisconsin, which tied her for BSU’s active leader in career points (24) with Tess Dusik. The Gophers topped the Buckeyes 9-2 and 5-1 in Columbus to close out calendar year 2013 with their second-best start in program history.• Rachael Bona (3g, 3a) and Sarah Davis (2g, 3a) led the Gophers against the Buckeyes, and 12 Gophers had points in the series. In the 9-2 win at OSU on Dec. 7, Bona recorded her first three-goal hat trick as a Gopher and added one assist for a four-point effort. Davis (3a), Dani Cameranesi (2g, 1a) and Meghan Lorence (1g, 2a) each added three points. The nine-goal performance by the Gophers marked the second time in as many games the team has scored nine times. Amanda Leveille made 24 saves in her 21st career win.• In the 5-1 win at OSU on Dec. 8, the Gophers outshot the Buckeyes, 48-13. The two teams combined for 51 penalty minutes, including 11 penalties for 22 minutes for Minnesota. Milica McMillen (2g, 2a) led all players with four points, and Davis added two goals for her five-point series. Defenseman Baylee Gillanders scored her third goal of the season as well.• With points in both recent games against the Buckeyes, Davis has extended her career-best point streak to 12 games (8g, 15a).• Minnesota is on a four-week hiatus for the holiday break and returns to action Jan. 10-11, 2014. The Gophers host Ohio State in a Friday/Saturday series at Ridder Arena to resume play in the new year. Minnesota owns a 57-8-1 all-time mark against Ohio State.
