HEALTH OF INMATES
Primary Health Care
All centres follow the primary health care model of the Department of Health. All offenders have access to health care daily and will be referred for specialist care if needed.Sixty percent of our health care staff is trained in primary health care and we have at least one primary health care practitioner at each Correctional Centre.Tuberculosis is managed according to the guidelines of the Department of Health.
Challenges in Primary Health Care
With overcrowding we are exposed to risks such as communicable/infectious diseases and mental conditions. We lack the necessary infrastructure to practice primary health care 100%.Primary health care practitioners must still be trained to dispense medication.
